Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Compare semiconductor stocks in three passes: first group companies by business model, then test whether their earnings and cash flows are sustainable, and finally trace AI demand to products each company actually sells. A low P/E can reflect peak-cycle profits or heavy investment needs; an “AI” label does not show how much revenue comes from AI. Use comparable reporting periods, dated valuation inputs, and a separate risk check rather than relying on one multiple.
Start by grouping companies with similar business models
Semiconductor companies do not all earn money in the same way. A designer that outsources manufacturing has different capital needs from a company that owns fabrication plants, and a foundry’s customer and capacity economics differ from those of a memory supplier. Establish the peer group before comparing valuation multiples.

| Business model | What the company does | What to examine closely |
|---|---|---|
| Fabless designer | Designs chips and typically relies on outside manufacturers to produce them. | Product mix, design wins, gross margin, customer concentration, and reliance on external manufacturing capacity. |
| Pure-play foundry | Manufactures chips designed by customers. TSMC describes itself as having pioneered this model; its products serve markets including high-performance computing, smartphones, IoT, automotive, and consumer electronics. | Utilization, process-node transitions, capital expenditure, yields, customer demand, and free cash flow after investment. |
| Memory manufacturer | Sells memory and storage products, with earnings strongly exposed to supply, pricing, and demand cycles. | Average selling prices, supply and inventory conditions, capital spending, and whether current margins look sustainable through a cycle. |
| Integrated device manufacturer (IDM) | Combines chip-product operations with manufacturing; some also operate foundry businesses. | Separate product and foundry performance where disclosed, along with fabrication costs, utilization, and external-customer growth. |
| Equipment or materials supplier | Sells tools or inputs used by chip manufacturers. | Orders, backlog, customer capital spending, geographic and end-market mix, and exposure to manufacturing expansions or delays. |
These are useful peer categories, not rigid boxes. Intel reports both product operations and a foundry segment, while describing the significant cost of leading-edge process development and the challenge of attracting outside foundry customers. Read segment reporting before treating an IDM as comparable to a pure-play designer or foundry.
Compare earnings on the same basis
Use a five-year history if available, or at least enough years to include a weaker and a stronger part of the cycle. For each company, record revenue, gross margin, operating margin, diluted EPS, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, and free cash flow. Keep fiscal years, currencies, and accounting periods explicit; a fiscal-year result is not automatically comparable to a calendar-year result.

- Revenue: Separate unit growth, pricing, acquisitions, and changes in business mix when company disclosures allow.
- Margins: Compare gross and operating margins over time, not just the latest quarter. Changes may reflect pricing, product mix, manufacturing costs, or utilization.
- EPS: Use diluted EPS and identify the reporting period. Note unusual items or changes in share count that affect comparability.
- Cash generation: Compare operating cash flow with capital expenditure and free cash flow. A business can report strong earnings while spending heavily to build capacity.
- Reporting calendar: Record each company’s fiscal year-end and any unusual period length. Micron’s fiscal 2026, for example, had 53 weeks and ended September 3, 2026; do not align it mechanically with calendar 2026.
TSMC’s 2025 annual report offers a company-reported example: U.S.-dollar revenue rose 35.9% to US$122.42 billion, net income rose 51.2% to US$55.21 billion, gross margin was 59.9%, and operating margin was 50.8%. Those figures describe TSMC’s 2025 reporting context; they are not a direct benchmark for companies with different business models or fiscal periods.
Adjust for the semiconductor cycle before judging earnings
Latest earnings can be unusually high or low when supply and pricing move sharply. This is especially important for memory: Micron’s fiscal 2026 filing says AI-driven demand for memory and storage outpaced industry supply, supporting higher pricing and margins, while supply allocation could affect customer segments. Gartner’s August 24, 2026 forecast also points to strong memory growth and pricing as a major driver, with additional capacity expected to enter the market in 2027.

For a cyclical company, compare reported results with a mid-cycle estimate. Make the normalization method visible: for example, state which years or margins you use and why, rather than silently substituting an assumed “normal” EPS. If the company’s earnings are near a cycle high, a trailing P/E may look deceptively low; if earnings are depressed, it may look unusually high or be meaningless.
Choose valuation measures that fit the business
Use prices, diluted share counts, balance sheets, and estimates from the same date and currency basis. Multiples move with share prices and earnings revisions, so date every figure and make clear whether it is trailing or forward-looking. A unified, current valuation snapshot is necessary for a fair stock ranking; the company and industry figures cited here do not provide one.

| Measure | Useful for | What it can miss |
|---|---|---|
| Trailing P/E | Companies with positive earnings in the latest twelve months. | It can understate valuation when profits are near a cyclical peak, and is not meaningful when earnings are negative. |
| Forward P/E | Comparing price with forecast earnings when the estimate period and source are consistent. | Forecasts can change; it does not show whether the earnings assumptions are achievable. |
| EV/EBITDA | Comparing operating earnings relative to enterprise value, which accounts for net debt and cash. | It does not directly account for the substantial capital expenditure some manufacturers require. |
| Price-to-sales | Companies with depressed or negative earnings, as a supplementary measure. | Revenue multiples ignore differences in margins, costs, and cash conversion. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Assessing cash generated relative to equity value. | Free cash flow can swing with investment cycles and working capital. |
| Return on invested capital | Considering how effectively a company uses the capital committed to its business. | Definitions and comparable data quality can vary between companies. |
Pair multiples with net cash or debt and the company’s investment requirements. Do not call a stock cheap just because its P/E is low, or justify a high multiple solely with AI exposure. Ask how much growth the valuation already assumes and whether the company can convert that growth into durable cash flow.
Trace AI exposure to reported products and revenue pathways
AI infrastructure demand can reach chipmakers through several layers. Direct exposure includes accelerators, CPUs, and high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Enabling exposure includes foundry wafers and advanced packaging, networking silicon, power management, analog devices, and optical interconnects. A company may benefit without selling a product marketed specifically as an AI chip.

- Identify the product or service: Name what the company sells into AI systems, rather than relying on an “AI” category or management slogan.
- Find the disclosure: Look for reported revenue, backlog, customer or end-market detail, and segment data. Do not assign an AI revenue percentage unless the company reports a defensible figure.
- Check the demand driver: Identify which customer, end market, or infrastructure build-out supports sales, and whether demand depends on a small number of buyers.
- Test supply and investment: Determine whether the company can meet demand, what capacity or packaging it needs, and how much capital it must spend to fulfill orders.
- Separate market forecasts from company results: Industry growth indicates a potential opportunity, not a company’s realized AI sales or future share.
Gartner’s August 24, 2026 forecast puts the scale of the opportunity—and the uncertainty—in perspective. These figures are forecasts, not realized results or company-specific revenue disclosures.

| Gartner forecast | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide semiconductor revenue in 2026 | US$1,555.2 billion | Forecast total for the industry, not a company sales target. |
| Memory revenue in 2026 | US$837.3 billion | Forecast; Gartner projects memory at 54% of semiconductor revenue, compared with 27% in 2025. |
| Nonmemory revenue in 2026 | US$717.9 billion | Forecast segment total. |
| AI data-center ecosystem share of semiconductor revenue | 36.5% in 2026; more than 53% by 2030 | Forecast share, reflecting an expanding infrastructure ecosystem rather than a reported share for any one supplier. |
Gartner also describes AI-cluster investment reaching beyond memory to CPUs, networking silicon, power management, analog, and optical interconnects. Use that breadth to identify possible exposure, then verify each company’s actual sales pathway in its own reporting. The industry’s memory outlook also makes cycle assumptions especially important: forecast pricing strength and later capacity additions can affect current earnings and their durability.

Put growth and valuation beside the risks
For every company in the comparison, record the risks that could interrupt sales growth or reduce returns on invested capital. A simple risk column often reveals why two stocks with similar growth or multiples are not truly comparable.
- Customer concentration: AMD discloses that a small number of customers account for a substantial portion of revenue and receivables. Consider the consequences if a major buyer delays, reduces, or redirects orders.
- Supply allocation: Micron describes tight supply and allocation choices across customer segments. Strong demand does not guarantee every customer or product line receives supply.
- Manufacturing execution and capital intensity: Assess yields, capacity utilization, process transitions, fabrication costs, and the cash required to build or upgrade capacity. Intel describes leading-edge development and fabrication as increasingly costly.
- Competition and technology shifts: Consider whether customers can choose alternative suppliers, architectures, or manufacturing processes, and whether a company can deliver on its product roadmap.
- Geopolitics and supply-chain exposure: The Semiconductor Industry Association identifies persistent supply-chain disruption and geopolitical tension as industry concerns. Map where a company manufactures, sells, and depends on suppliers without assuming that industry exposure is identical for every firm.
- AI spending slowdown: Test whether the investment case still works if customers slow data-center spending, shift purchases, or take longer to deploy infrastructure.
Keep market-wide statistics in context
The Semiconductor Industry Association’s 2026 report says global semiconductor sales reached US$795.6 billion in 2025. It also reports that U.S.-headquartered semiconductor companies generated US$425 billion, or 53.4% of global market share, in 2025, and that American semiconductor companies invested US$76.8 billion in R&D that year. These are industry-level figures with a defined geographic scope; they do not identify a particular company’s market share, research productivity, or expected stock return.
Build a comparison sheet before drawing a conclusion
For each candidate, complete the same fields and use the same valuation date. If a figure is not disclosed or cannot be compared reliably, mark it as unavailable rather than filling the gap with an estimate presented as fact.
- Business model and reporting segments
- Fiscal year-end, fiscal-period length, currency, and latest reporting period
- Five-year revenue, gross margin, operating margin, diluted EPS, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, and free cash flow
- Reported results alongside a clearly explained mid-cycle earnings estimate, if relevant
- Trailing and forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, price-to-sales where useful, free-cash-flow yield, net cash or debt, and return on invested capital
- AI-related products, disclosed AI revenue or backlog where available, demand drivers, supply constraints, and required investment
- Customer concentration, execution, competition, geopolitical exposure, and sensitivity to an AI spending slowdown
This framework helps investors compare evidence rather than labels. It is not a personalized financial recommendation; a decision also depends on the investor’s objectives, risk tolerance, and the valuation inputs current on the day of analysis.
