Use BrowserStack Percy to capture the same page in selected browsers, compare each render with an approved baseline, and review browser-specific differences before approving a change. Choose Percy’s managed browser selection for straightforward modern-browser coverage; use BrowserStack Automate when you need to specify the operating system and browser versions explicitly.
Choose how to configure browser coverage
Use Percy-managed browser selection for a managed set
Percy can render snapshots in selected browsers while BrowserStack manages the rendering environments and updates the available versions and operating systems. BrowserStack lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari as defaults for new projects; the exact versions and underlying environments are managed by BrowserStack. See Percy cross-browser visual testing settings.

This is the simpler choice when you want to check a page across modern browsers without specifying the operating system for each render. In this mode, you cannot select the underlying OS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Automate when OS and browser versions must be explicit
When a test requires specific platform coverage, configure BrowserStack Automate with the OS name, OS version, browser name, and browser version. Percy’s browser selection and Automate’s platform configuration are distinct approaches: the former delegates rendering-environment management to Percy, while the latter lets the test specify platform dimensions. Consult the cross-browser configuration documentation for current configuration details.

BrowserStack also describes Automate and App Automate as routes to broader browser, viewport, and device coverage. Choose the route that matches the platforms your application needs to support rather than adding combinations without a testing reason.
Capture comparable page states
- Pick the page and state. Use the same URL, application data, login state, and interaction state in each run. A page with different content or state can produce a diff that says little about browser rendering.
- Keep the viewport and timing consistent. Compare like with like: match the widths and ensure the page has reached the intended state before taking snapshots. For responsive testing, treat each width as a separate comparison point.
- Capture through your chosen integration. BrowserStack documents a BrowserStack SDK route that combines functional and visual testing in its workflow, and a Percy SDK route for manual integration with supported application and end-to-end testing setups. Check the supported SDKs documentation for current framework support and configuration; the applicable setup depends on your test framework.
- Account for per-browser usage. Each selected browser produces a separate screenshot counted toward monthly screenshot usage. Check BrowserStack’s current plan information before estimating allowances or costs; plan prices and limits can change.
For routine comparisons, BrowserStack recommends using Percy’s Recommended match level and checking the full page for broad visual coverage. It also recommends isolating screenshot calls in a wrapper so integration changes remain localized. These are BrowserStack’s recommendations, not independent comparative test results; see its recommended guidelines.
Compare each render with the correct baseline
A baseline is an earlier approved render used as the reference for a new snapshot. Percy selects a base build according to the project’s baseline strategy, so a useful comparison depends on having the right reference and approval model.

These strategies differ in approval granularity, not in whether a reviewer should inspect the browser result. See BrowserStack’s baseline management overview for the workflow details.
If you add a browser to the selected set, its first run does not have a historical baseline for that browser. It needs a baseline from a subsequent build before Percy can show a comparison against an earlier approved render.
Inspect browser-specific differences before approving
Review the result for each browser independently. In Test Companion’s web visual-analysis workflow, reviewers can use side-by-side, overlay, and diff views, and switch among captured browsers and widths. The available views and workflow are described in BrowserStack’s web visual analysis documentation.

A visible difference is not automatically an application regression. It may be an intended design change, a real defect, or a consequence of the rendering environment. BrowserStack specifically notes that system fonts, form controls, and scrollbars can differ with the operating system. If OS-level appearance is part of the question, use explicit Automate platform configuration rather than assuming Percy-managed browsers let you choose the OS.
- Confirm that the compared snapshots show the same content, state, and viewport.
- Check whether the difference appears in one browser or across the selected set.
- Decide whether the change is intended, a product defect, or an environment-specific rendering difference.
- Approve only after confirming that the visual change is intended. If it is a regression, leave the build unapproved, fix the application, and rerun the test.
Percy surfaces the differences; the reviewer decides whether they should become the approved reference. For more on the review workflow, see BrowserStack’s visual analysis documentation.
Choose coverage and approval scope deliberately
| Decision | Use this when | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Percy-managed browsers | You want a managed selection of browsers without configuring each OS. | BrowserStack manages the rendering environments and updates available versions; the underlying OS is not user-selectable in this mode. |
| Automate platform configuration | You need explicit OS, OS version, browser, and browser version settings. | Specify each platform dimension in the configuration and keep the chosen matrix tied to real support needs. |
| Git baseline management | The team approves a complete build as a unit. | Approval is at whole-build level. |
| Visual Git | The team needs to approve snapshots individually. | Approval is per snapshot. |
| More browsers or widths | You need to uncover browser-specific or responsive differences. | Each browser snapshot counts toward monthly screenshot usage; maintain consistent page state and capture timing to reduce incidental variation. |
Troubleshoot misleading or missing comparisons
A newly selected browser has no useful diff
Cause: There is no prior approved baseline for that browser. Fix: Capture it and establish a baseline through the project’s approval workflow; use a subsequent build for a historical comparison.

- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
The diff shows fonts, controls, or scrollbar changes
Cause: The operating-system rendering environment may differ, especially when comparing system fonts, native form controls, or scrollbars. Fix: Verify the OS configuration. Use Automate if the test needs explicit OS selection; Percy-managed browser selection does not expose OS selection.
Large or inconsistent diffs appear between runs
Cause: The page state, viewport, content, or capture timing may not match. Fix: Stabilize test data and interactions, use the same widths, and wait for the intended page state before capturing. Review each browser separately rather than treating a combined set as one result.

Approval updates more than the intended screenshot
Cause: The project uses Git baseline management, where approval is at whole-build level. Fix: If per-snapshot approval is the required workflow, use Visual Git and confirm the project’s baseline strategy in the baseline management documentation.
