How scheduled screenshot comparisons work
A scheduled comparison checks how a page looks over time; it is different from checking only whether the URL responds. The workflow is:

- Choose a page and the state you want to monitor.
- Capture and save a baseline screenshot.
- Repeat the capture with consistent settings.
- Compare the new screenshot with the baseline and inspect the diff.
- Send useful alerts to a person who can decide whether the change matters.
CaptureKit’s guide to automated screenshot monitoring describes capturing screenshots and comparing them to detect visual differences. A detected difference is a prompt to investigate, not proof that the page is broken or that the change is unintended.

Choose pages and states worth watching
Begin with a small set of pages where a visible change would matter. CaptureKit identifies landing pages, ecommerce product pages, and third-party widgets as monitoring examples. For each one, record the URL and the intended page state, such as the product variant or dashboard view, so later captures are comparable.

If a page requires a signed-in session or particular interaction to reach the view, treat that state as part of the capture setup. The available CaptureKit material establishes configurable screenshot capture, but does not specify a complete recipe for reproducing every authenticated or interactive state; verify that your chosen setup reaches the intended view before relying on its alerts.
Establish a baseline and keep later captures consistent
Store the baseline image with its URL, capture time, and settings. On later runs, keep the page, viewport or full-page scope, output format, and relevant wait or resource-blocking settings consistent. If these change between runs, the diff may reflect the changed capture conditions rather than a website update.

Choose the scope and format that suit your review process, then use the same choice for the baseline and subsequent captures.

Generate a diff between the new capture and the saved baseline. Use the diff image to find where the screenshots diverge, then inspect the before-and-after images in context. A pixel-level or regional difference may come from expected content changes, dynamic data, or capture configuration drift; the diff by itself cannot determine whether the change is important.

CaptureKit describes alerts for significant visual differences and before-and-after reports, but its reviewed material does not establish a universal alert threshold. Choose a threshold that fits the page and its normal visual variation. Route an alert with both images and enough context—such as page URL, run time, and capture settings—for a reviewer to assess it.
Choose a schedule and workflow
Simple scheduled script
A script can suit a small number of pages when you are comfortable maintaining the recurring job, storing baselines, creating diffs, and sending notifications. CaptureKit’s guide illustrates a daily job that captures, compares, and emails a notification. Set the interval according to how quickly your team needs to know about changes; the daily example is not a recommendation for every site.

Monitoring and API workflow
For several important pages or a process that needs configured alerts and before-and-after reporting, CaptureKit describes a monitoring/API approach. Choose between a script and a monitoring workflow based on page volume, scheduling and alert controls, history and reporting needs, and how much human review your team can provide. The available sources do not establish comparative pricing or performance benchmarks, so those should not be assumed.

Troubleshoot misleading diffs
- The diff shows broad changes: Check whether viewport, capture scope, output format, or resource and wait settings changed. Restore the baseline settings before interpreting the result.
- Only changing content differs: Dynamic page data or third-party widgets can produce expected visual changes. Document known variation and have a person review alerts; the cited CaptureKit sources do not provide a complete method for suppressing every source of visual noise.
- The screenshot is not the state you meant to monitor: Verify the requested URL and whether the capture reaches the intended page or interaction state. Recreate the baseline only after confirming the correct state, otherwise later comparisons will continue to use the wrong reference.
- Alerts are too frequent or too sparse: Reassess the threshold against normal variation on that page and review representative diffs. No single threshold is established as suitable for all sites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a visual difference mean the website is broken?
No. It means the screenshots differ; a reviewer must decide whether the change is expected, harmful, or worth investigating.
Should I capture every page on the same schedule?
Not necessarily. Set frequency according to how quickly your team needs to learn about changes on each monitored page.
