That distinction matters because a quadruped and a humanoid are different body plans with different mobility and manipulation options.
What does “robotic horse” mean?
It is not a clearly established product category in the official sources considered here. It may refer literally to a horse-shaped robot, or informally to a four-legged robot. Unitree’s product pages, for example, describe quadrupeds such as Go2 and Go1, not a distinct horse-shaped product line. If you mean a particular horse-shaped machine, compare that model directly; if you mean a robot on four legs, “quadruped” is the clearer term.

This article uses quadruped for four-legged robots and humanoid for robots with a human-like body plan. The categories describe form, not a guarantee of what a robot can do.
Start with the task and environment
Write down the work the robot must perform, then the conditions it must handle. A quadruped may suit movement across terrain, while a humanoid may be relevant where the task involves mobile manipulation—moving while handling objects, tools, or equipment. Neither shape is automatically better for every job.

- Task: Is the goal inspection, research, education, logistics, interaction, manipulation, or demonstration?
- Setting: Will the robot work indoors, on stairs, on gravel or slopes, outdoors, or in spaces designed for people?
- Human-like interaction: Must it use tools or objects made for people, or is reliable movement through the environment the main requirement?
- Operating model: Does the work require autonomous navigation, teleoperation, or a combination? Identify the sensors, software, and interfaces included in the exact configuration.
Unitree describes Go2 as suited to complex terrain such as gravel and slopes. Boston Dynamics describes Spot as a quadruped used by customers and Atlas as taking early steps toward commercial mobile manipulation. These are manufacturer descriptions of different products and roles, not a controlled comparison proving which robot performs better.
Compare the right things, under matched conditions
When evaluating named models, compare like with like: the same task, setting, payload, operating mode, and measurement conditions. A speed figure for one robot cannot be compared meaningfully with another robot’s payload claim, and an edited demonstration video does not establish dependable autonomy.

| Comparison area | What to verify | What the available claims do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | Documented locomotion, terrain limits, obstacle handling, and recovery behavior for the model and configuration. | A single video or headline speed number does not prove reliable autonomous operation. |
| Manipulation | Whether the robot has the hands, tools, reach, and control needed for the intended objects and tasks. | There is no common manipulation benchmark in the cited product descriptions. |
| Payload and runtime | Required load, runtime, duty cycle, and the conditions under which those figures are measured. | The cited official results do not provide matched payload or runtime figures across the products discussed. |
| Sensing and autonomy | Included sensors, navigation functions, teleoperation options, software interfaces, and software version. | Confirm whether described features are included or optional for the exact SKU; capabilities may vary by configuration. |
| Safety and integration | Safeguards, access controls, operating procedures, and integration requirements for the deployment. | The cited material does not establish a shared safety certification or comparative risk data. |
What the named examples actually tell you
Quadrupeds: terrain and movement
Unitree’s Go2 page describes movement over complex terrain, including gravel and slopes. That is a vendor claim, not a guarantee for every site, load, software version, or operating condition. Test the specific configuration against the terrain and obstacles the robot will encounter.

Unitree’s undated Go1 product page, accessed in 2026, lists a weight of 12 kg, an approximately 3–5 kg adaptive load capacity, and a stated speed of 17 km/h. Those figures apply to Go1 as described by its manufacturer; they are not benchmarks for quadrupeds generally, nor a substitute for testing under your required conditions.

Humanoids: movement with manipulation
Boston Dynamics presents Atlas as an all-electric humanoid and describes its direction as commercial mobile manipulation. That makes it a relevant example when the job combines movement with object handling, but the cited page does not supply a common performance benchmark against quadrupeds. Confirm the capabilities and availability relevant to your intended use rather than assuming a humanoid can perform any task designed for a person.

A practical selection checklist
- Define the job: Specify the task, operating environment, required payload, runtime, and whether manipulation is necessary.
- Choose a body-plan shortlist: Consider a quadruped when four-legged mobility is central; consider a humanoid when the intended work makes a human-like form or mobile manipulation relevant. Treat this as a shortlist, not a verdict.
- Check model-specific evidence: Match claims to the exact model, configuration, and conditions. Separate manufacturer descriptions from independently comparable test results.
- Confirm the full deployment: Check sensors, software, accessories, safety procedures, integration, service, and total cost for your region.
- Validate in the intended setting: Where possible, evaluate the robot on representative tasks and terrain before relying on it operationally.
