The fairest way to compare quick-commerce apps is to place the same basket from the same address at the same time, then compare the final checkout total and the promised delivery window—not the advertised delivery-fee line. Your total can include item prices, delivery and service fees, small-order or distance charges, taxes, tip, membership discounts, and promotions. Reliability also has to be checked locally by recording whether the order arrives within the stated window and how the app handles late, missing, wrong, or poor-quality items.
The method below works for grocery, convenience, restaurant, and other on-demand delivery services. It uses current US platform policies where those are documented, while showing you which details must be verified in your own cart.

Start with the number you will actually pay
A delivery-fee comparison can be misleading. One app may show a low delivery charge but add a larger service fee, while another may price delivery higher and include a promotion or membership benefit. Compare the complete amount presented immediately before payment.

| Checkout line | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Items subtotal | Price of every item before fees, tax, tip, and discounts | Retailer pricing and promotions can make an apparently cheaper app more expensive overall. |
| Delivery fee | Standard or priority fee shown for the selected window | It can change with retailer, distance, demand, order value, and timing. |
| Service fee | Amount and any percentage or minimum described at checkout | A $0 delivery fee does not remove this charge. |
| Small-order, long-distance, regulatory, or other charges | Each line separately | These fees can appear only for particular basket sizes, addresses, or markets. |
| Tax | Sales, local, or other applicable tax | Tax may differ when the apps use different retailers or item prices. |
| Tip | Tip amount, and whether you changed the default | Use the same tip rule when comparing totals; do not silently compare one tipped order with one untipped order. |
| Membership and promotions | Discount name, amount, eligibility, and expiration if shown | A one-time coupon should not be treated as a permanent fee advantage. |
Save a screenshot or copy the checkout breakdown. A fee or estimate is a snapshot, not a permanent characteristic of an app.

Build an apples-to-apples test
Use the real delivery address
Enter the address where you normally receive orders, including apartment or building information when relevant. Coverage, retailer selection, distance fees, courier availability, taxes, and estimated times are all location-sensitive. Testing from a city center, a workplace, or a neighboring ZIP code can produce a result you cannot use.
Select comparable retailers
Choose the same retailer in each app when possible. If one service does not list that retailer, choose the closest equivalent and disclose the difference. A supermarket basket and a convenience-store basket are not interchangeable: item prices, pack sizes, substitutions, and fees may all change.
Create a fixed basket
Use items you genuinely buy and write down brand, size, quantity, and any required substitutions. A useful basket includes several common categories, such as produce, dairy, packaged food, household supplies, and one bulky or temperature-sensitive item. Do not replace an unavailable item without recording it; the substitution can change both the subtotal and the final decision.
The Tool Desk

- Note unavailable products, pack-size differences, and substitution settings.
- Keep quantities identical across apps.
- Do not add a tip or coupon in one app and omit it in another.
Match the timing
Compare standard delivery with standard delivery, or priority with priority. Capture the actual promised start and end time shown at checkout. “Fast delivery” labels are not comparable service levels if one app promises 30 minutes and another gives a two-hour window.
Repeat at realistic ordering times
Check when you normally order, such as weekday evenings or weekend mornings. Demand, courier supply, weather, and store workload can change both price and estimated arrival. One daytime check cannot establish which app is consistently cheaper or faster.
How minimum orders and small-order charges change the result
Minimum-order rules matter most for top-up trips. Compare the minimum against your actual subtotal, not against a hypothetical large grocery shop. An app that is inexpensive for a $60 order may be poor value for a $12 emergency purchase if it adds a small-order charge or refuses delivery below its threshold.
Instacart
Instacart’s Help Center states: “All orders must be at least $10 to qualify for delivery.” Treat that as the platform-stated baseline, not a guarantee that every retailer, geography, or future date will use exactly the same rule. Instacart+ members receive $0 delivery fees on eligible orders of $10 or more per retailer, while service fees still apply. The page also lists additional thresholds for Costco and restaurant orders; check the retailer-specific terms displayed in your cart.

DoorDash
DoorDash describes small-order-related fees as one possible charge in addition to delivery and service fees. Whether such a fee appears depends on the market and order details. Its US help information says exact fees can depend on the merchant, DashPass status, and local regulations. A changed fee structure is rolling out in some locations rather than applying identically across the country.
Uber Eats
Uber’s US grocery guide dated September 10, 2026 describes delivery, service, and other applicable charges but does not establish one nationwide grocery minimum. Check the cart for your selected merchant and address. If your order is below a displayed minimum, compare the cost of adding a needed item with the cost of the alternative app’s fees.
Use a small-order test
Run a second comparison with the smallest order you commonly place. Record whether delivery is available, whether a minimum is enforced, and every surcharge. This exposes friction that a large matched basket can hide.
Understand what “free delivery” does—and does not—mean
A zero in the delivery-fee field is only one line of the receipt. Instacart explicitly says eligible Instacart+ orders can receive $0 delivery fees while service fees continue to apply. DoorDash and Uber Eats likewise describe multiple fee categories, so a free-delivery label cannot be used as a proxy for a free order.
For each app, calculate:
all-in total = items subtotal + delivery fee + service fee + other charges + tax + tip − discounts
Then calculate the effective fee burden:
effective fees = all-in total − items subtotal − tip
Keeping the tip separate helps you compare the platform’s pricing without pretending that a courier’s compensation is a platform fee. Use the same tip policy for every app when making a consumer-value decision.

Memberships: calculate your own break-even point
Subscription programs can lower delivery fees without lowering service fees, item prices, or taxes. Do not assume a membership pays for itself because it advertises free delivery.

- Membership price for the period you will actually use (monthly, annual, or promotional term).
- Number of orders you expect during that period.
- Delivery-fee savings on each order that meets the program’s eligibility rules.
- Service fees that remain after the membership discount.
- Required minimum subtotal, retailer restrictions, distance limits, and any excluded order types.
- Cancellation, renewal, and trial-ending terms shown at sign-up.
Use a conservative calculation
net membership value = sum of eligible delivery-fee savings − membership cost − extra spending caused by meeting minimums
Run the calculation using your normal basket and a lower-order scenario. If only half your orders meet the eligibility threshold, count savings on half—not on every order. The available platform information supports specific Instacart+ conditions but does not establish a universal break-even number for all apps or households.
Check eligibility at checkout
Before subscribing, open a representative cart and verify that the membership discount appears. Confirm whether service fees, long-distance fees, priority fees, restaurant orders, or particular retailers are excluded. A membership can be worthwhile for frequent qualifying orders and poor value for occasional or small orders.
Compare reliability as a service promise, not a marketing adjective
No source reviewed supplies an independent, apples-to-apples reliability ranking across quick-commerce apps. Reliability is local and time-specific, so measure the parts that affect you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecord the promised window
Write down the checkout window, the order time, and whether the app offered standard or priority delivery. A narrow window is not automatically better if the app frequently misses it; an accurate two-hour window may be more useful than an optimistic estimate.
Check priority availability and conditions
Instacart describes priority delivery as its fastest option, subject to shopper availability. Its help information says the company may provide an automated credit or refund of the priority fee when an order arrives more than 30 minutes after the end of the selected priority window. That is a stated possible remedy, not a guaranteed service-level commitment for every order. Record whether priority was offered, its fee, the promised window, the actual arrival, and the remedy offered.

- This card is redeemable via grubhub.com or the Grubhub app in markets where Grubhub is available within the U.S. only.
- To redeem, log into your account online or in the app, select "gift cards", select "add a new gift card" and enter in the gift card number to add the balance to your account.
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Log order quality
- Arrival time compared with the promised window.
- Missing, damaged, melted, expired, or incorrect items.
- Substitutions and whether your substitution preferences were followed.
- Communication about out-of-stock products or delays.
- Time required to reach support and the resolution: refund, credit, redelivery, or no adjustment.
Do not infer overall reliability from one successful or failed order. Use a log across several orders at the times you normally buy.

| Instacart | Delivery fees vary with retailer, delivery window, and order total. Service fees vary with location and cart details. Long-distance and priority fees may apply. Exact fees depend on merchant, DashPass status, and local regulations. | Whether your location has the changed fee structure, the merchant’s current fee schedule, minimum or small-order charge, and the delivery window. |
| Uber Eats | Uber’s September 10, 2026 US grocery guide says grocery orders can include delivery, service, and other applicable charges. Delivery fees depend on merchant, location, demand, and nearby courier availability. Eligible Uber One orders may receive $0 delivery fees. | Eligibility for your merchant and cart, current membership discount, additional charges, and the promised arrival window. |
DoorDash announced on July 23, 2026 that a fee update was beginning that day and would roll out across most of the US over the following months. The announcement described delivery fees as fixed by merchant and service fees as varying with delivery effort. Because rollout is gradual, do not apply the announcement as if every US address already has identical terms.

How to choose when the results conflict
Choose the lowest repeatable total
If one app wins only because of a one-time coupon or an unusually low-demand period, it is not the durable winner. Compare at least two ordinary ordering times and separate recurring savings from promotions.
Prioritize minimum-order fit for small trips
For medication, forgotten ingredients, or a few household items, a service with a manageable minimum and no disproportionate small-order fee can beat a service that is cheaper for a full weekly shop.
Value predictable timing when the difference is small
If all-in totals are close, favor the app whose windows are accurate for your address and whose support has resolved problems acceptably. Reliability is not proven by a badge; it is demonstrated by your order log.
Keep separate winners for separate use cases
You may reasonably use one service for large planned grocery orders, another for urgent convenience items, and a third when a particular retailer has better inventory. A single overall ranking hides these differences.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes
Comparing only delivery fees
Problem: The cheapest delivery line still produces the highest receipt.
Fix: Compare the complete checkout amount and calculate effective fees separately from the tip.
Using different baskets
Problem: Item prices, pack sizes, and substitutions overwhelm the fee difference.
Fix: Lock the item list and disclose every unavoidable difference.
Treating a membership as automatic savings
Problem: Service fees or unmet minimums erase delivery-fee savings.
Fix: Count only qualifying orders and include the subscription cost and cancellation terms.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Assuming a company-wide policy applies everywhere
Problem: Rollouts and local regulations make the displayed terms different from a national announcement.
Fix: Trust the fee breakdown and delivery window shown for your address at checkout.
Calling one order a reliability test
Problem: A single delay or perfect delivery may reflect unusual demand or a particularly easy order.
Fix: Log several comparable orders and record both timing and item quality.
Bottom line
There is no universal cheapest or most reliable quick-commerce app. Use your address, a matched basket, the same delivery speed, and the final checkout total. Check minimums and small-order fees for the order sizes you actually place, model memberships with qualifying orders only, and keep a delivery log that records promised versus actual arrival and the remedy for problems. That process produces a decision you can reproduce when prices, demand, and local policies change.
