To compare QSSR with native-resolution rendering fairly, keep your TV, PS5 video output, viewing position and game scene the same, and change only the game’s graphics option. That lets you judge what you see without introducing changes from TV processing or console output settings. QSSR is available only in games that offer it; Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles with the option.
What QSSR means on PS5
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI-guided upscaling technology for standard PS5. Sony says it grew from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and uses a streamlined neural-network architecture with a hand-tuned implementation intended to make the most of PS5 performance. Sony’s stated goal is to improve image detail and stability; that is an aim, not a measured guarantee for every game or scene.

In its October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use the QSSR library, with QSSR offered as an additional graphics option on PS5. Support is a game-level feature, not a setting to assume every PS5 title includes. Sony’s announcement also quotes Insomniac Games describing extra pixel-level clarity and stability in environments in Marvel’s Wolverine; it does not provide a controlled QSSR-versus-native test.

Set up a fair comparison without changing the TV
- Choose a supported game and comparison. Confirm that the game’s current version includes QSSR. Note the game and patch/version if available, your PS5 model, and the graphics mode you are comparing. If the game offers several modes, compare modes with similar intent rather than silently changing other graphics options too.
- Leave the TV setup alone. Keep the same HDMI connection, TV picture mode, sharpness, motion processing, HDR configuration and seating position for both observations. Do not adjust TV settings between switches.
- Keep PS5 video output fixed. Check the console’s output under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, and leave the resolution and refresh-related settings unchanged during the comparison. Sony says the PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically; 1440p output requires a display that supports 1440p. See PlayStation Support’s resolution instructions.
- Return to the same scene. Use the same camera angle and, as far as possible, the same movement or action. Toggle only the game’s QSSR/native or other relevant graphics option, then revisit that view.
- Compare more than a paused frame. Look separately at fine detail, edge quality, stability during movement, shimmering and visible reconstruction artifacts. If performance or frame pacing is relevant, assess it separately rather than assuming image quality tells you the whole story.
- Repeat the switch. Let the scene settle after each change and toggle back and forth several times. Record the conditions and what you observed; call it a practical visual comparison, not a lab measurement unless it was instrumented and controlled as one.
What to look for in each mode
- Fine detail: Check small textures and distant features in the same part of the scene. Avoid judging from a different camera position or a scene with different lighting.
- Edges: Inspect thin lines, object outlines and dense geometry for jaggedness or softness.
- Temporal stability: Watch those details while the camera or scene moves. A still image cannot show whether detail remains stable over time.
- Artifacts: Look for shimmering or other visible reconstruction artifacts, and note where they appear rather than reducing the result to a single overall score.
- Performance and signal: If you can measure frame pacing or performance, report how you measured it. Keep the PS5 output signal and the game’s mode conditions in your notes so the comparison is interpretable.
What an at-home comparison can—and cannot—establish
This method helps you decide which option looks preferable to you in a particular game, scene and setup. It does not establish that one mode is universally better. Sony describes QSSR as intended to improve image detail and stability, but its announcement publishes no controlled head-to-head comparison with native rendering, per-game internal-resolution measurements, pixel-count analysis, image-quality score or quantified frame-rate result.

Accordingly, avoid inferring an internal render resolution or percentage improvement from appearance alone. A practical observation such as “this scene looked steadier to me in QSSR” is more precise than claiming QSSR always beats native resolution. Results may differ across scenes and games, and the official announcement does not resolve that comparison for every case.
