1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlaywright has no single “remove pixel noise” switch. Make captures repeatable first, then mask only irrelevant dynamic regions and tune the comparison limits to match the differences you can justify. Keep the browser, operating system and capture conditions consistent, and review every visual diff before changing a baseline.
Make the screenshots repeatable before relaxing comparison
Playwright Test’s visual assertion is expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On its first run, it creates a reference image; later runs compare a new capture with that reference. Snapshots are PNG by default, and you can use WebP by giving the snapshot a .webp filename. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.

A screenshot can differ even when the page code has not changed. Rendering may vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, headless mode and other environmental factors. Generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment rather than trying to compensate for machine-to-machine differences by making the assertion permissive.

The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots produce the same result before it compares them. By default, animations are disabled for the capture: finite animations are advanced to completion, while infinite animations are canceled for capture and then resumed. These behaviors reduce timing-related variation, but do not make changing page data or inconsistent environments deterministic.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Stabilize page content, then isolate irrelevant variation
Keep meaningful content visible
First remove causes of instability from the test setup where possible: use the same environment and arrange for the page to reach the same meaningful state before capture. If a region changes for reasons unrelated to the behavior under test, Playwright’s mask and stylePath options can target it. Custom screenshot CSS can filter dynamic or volatile elements.
Use masks or CSS narrowly—for example, on a changing timestamp that is not part of the test. Masking a region removes visual coverage there, so do not hide content whose appearance, position or layout matters to the test.

Decide whether animation is part of the test
For ordinary static-state comparisons, keep the default animations: 'disabled'. Allow animations only when their appearance is itself the behavior being tested; otherwise, motion can make captures depend on timing.

Playwright uses pixelmatch for visual comparisons. Its options address different questions: whether a corresponding pixel’s color is sufficiently different to count, and how many differing pixels the whole image may contain. Adjust them separately and use observed diffs to justify a tolerance.

| Option | What it controls | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
threshold |
How different corresponding pixel colors must be before a pixel counts as different. The documented default is 0.2. |
Consider a small, evidence-based adjustment for minor rendering variation. Raising it broadly can make real color changes harder to detect. |
maxDiffPixels |
The maximum absolute number of pixels allowed to differ; unset by default. | Use when an understood absolute count of differing pixels is acceptable. |
maxDiffPixelRatio |
The maximum fraction of image pixels allowed to differ. | Use when a ratio fits screenshots of varying dimensions better. Choose it from observed diffs, not an arbitrary copied value. |
animations |
Capture-time handling of CSS and Web Animations; the default is 'disabled'. |
Keep the default for static states; explicitly allow motion only when animation appearance is under test. |
mask / stylePath |
Covers or alters selected content at capture time. | Target known volatile values while leaving meaningful visual behavior exposed. |
Use the documented threshold default as a starting point, not a universal guarantee. A larger maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio accepts a wider difference in image area; it does not make the images more alike. If color shifts matter, changing a count limit will not address their cause. If only a small known region is unstable, a narrow mask may preserve more useful coverage than loosening the comparison globally.
Review diffs and update baselines deliberately
Keep reference snapshots in version control and review them like other test changes. When a page change is intentional, update snapshots with --update-snapshots, then inspect the resulting baseline changes. An updated reference records the new expected appearance; it does not establish that the appearance is correct.

- Run the visual test in the same browser and host environment used to generate its baseline.
- Inspect the diff and identify whether it comes from an intentional UI change, unstable content or environmental variation.
- Stabilize the page or mask only irrelevant variation before adjusting global tolerances.
- If the expected appearance intentionally changed, run Playwright with
--update-snapshotsand review the changed images before committing them.
Troubleshoot common visual-diff failures
- Only dates, counters or other changing values differ: arrange stable test data if possible; otherwise, target only that irrelevant region with
maskorstylePath. - Many elements shift between runs: check that the page is in the same state and that baseline and comparison use the same OS, browser version, settings and capture conditions before changing tolerances.
- Small color variations fail the assertion: inspect the pixel diff, then consider a modest
thresholdadjustment if the variation is immaterial. Raising it too far can conceal genuine color regressions. - A few differing pixels fail an otherwise useful comparison: use
maxDiffPixelswhen an absolute allowance is appropriate, ormaxDiffPixelRatiowhen image dimensions vary. Set the limit from reviewed diffs. - Animation frames vary: keep
animationsdisabled for static-state tests. If animation appearance is the subject, explicitly test that motion rather than treating it as noise. - The new page design keeps failing against the old reference: confirm the design change is intentional, update snapshots with
--update-snapshots, and review the updated files.

If your goal is to capture a website rather than maintain a Playwright visual regression test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does toHaveScreenshot() compare screenshots immediately?
No. Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the capture with its reference.
Can Playwright visual snapshots use WebP?
Yes. PNG is the default, and WebP is supported when the snapshot filename uses the .webp extension.
