Use Selenium’s TakesScreenshot interface to save a screenshot from Java. A standard WebDriver screenshot captures the browser’s visible viewport, not automatically the whole page. If Tamil characters appear as boxes, investigate the Ubuntu browser’s fonts and text shaping separately: Selenium can save an image even when the browser cannot render the script correctly.
Capture the browser viewport with Java Selenium
The following example opens a page in Chrome, saves the visible browser viewport as a PNG, and closes the driver even if capture or saving fails. Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture.

Set up the browser and driver for your Ubuntu system
ChromeDriver is a separate executable Selenium uses to control Chrome. The required browser, driver, Java, and Selenium versions depend on your specific installation; the title alone does not identify an Ubuntu release or version combination, so there is no universal install command to give here. Check Google’s ChromeDriver getting-started guide for Linux setup and choose versions suitable for your environment.

Save somewhere predictable
The example writes tamil-page.png relative to the process’s current working directory. Use an absolute path or a different Path if your application runs from a service, IDE, or scheduled job whose working directory is not what you expect. The output format is PNG because the code saves the screenshot file returned by Selenium without converting it.
Viewport screenshot or full-page screenshot?
A WebDriver screenshot is defined as an image of the top-level browsing context’s visual viewport. It does not promise to capture a long document from top to bottom. An element screenshot is also bounded: it captures the visible region of the element’s bounding rectangle after the element is scrolled into view. These behaviors are described in the W3C WebDriver screenshot specification.

If you need the whole document, choose a browser-specific full-page method or implement a deliberate scroll-and-stitch workflow, then validate it on the browser you will run. The standard screenshot call above is not a portable full-page recipe.

When Tamil appears as empty or crossed boxes, the likely issue is the browser’s font coverage or text shaping, not the act of saving a screenshot. A font must include the needed Tamil glyphs, and the browser must support complex text layout so characters are shaped correctly. Installing a language in Ubuntu Desktop can add support components such as fonts and input methods, though support varies among applications; see the Ubuntu 24.04 language-support documentation.

Noto Sans Tamil is a font for the Tamil script. Noto’s usage guidance also explains that browsers can use fallback fonts when the first-choice font lacks a character. This makes an installed Tamil-capable font a useful thing to check, but it does not guarantee identical rendering in every browser package or release. Confirm the result in the actual Chrome environment used by Selenium.
- Use representative text. Open a test page containing the Tamil characters, punctuation, and line lengths that matter to your target page.
- Wait for the page and fonts. Do not capture until the content is present and the page’s fonts have loaded. The right wait condition depends on how the site loads its content; the documentation cited here does not establish a universal wait value.
- Capture and inspect the PNG. Check for missing glyphs, incorrect shaping, clipping at the viewport edge, and whether the viewport dimensions show the intended content.
- Record the environment for repeat runs. Note the Ubuntu release, Java and Selenium versions, browser and driver versions, viewport dimensions, and font setup. Compatibility for unspecified combinations is not established by the cited setup material.
A community Ask Ubuntu discussion reports missing Tamil glyphs in Chrome or Edge and user workarounds involving fonts and browser font settings. Treat that as anecdotal troubleshooting, not a guaranteed fix; check current package names and browser settings for your Ubuntu release before applying any commands from a community thread.
