To compare browser engines, configure the engine you want, keep the capture environment and page state controlled, and run a separate reference-and-test cycle for each engine. Its documentation does not describe a single default command that automatically tests every browser.
What BackstopJS compares
BackstopJS captures pages described by scenarios, compares test screenshots with stored references, and presents visual differences for review. Its documented workflow is backstop init, backstop test, and then backstop approve when you decide a change is intentional. Approval updates the reference collection used for later comparisons. See the BackstopJS README.

The default rendering engine is Puppeteer. The README also documents a Playwright engine configured to use Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit. Choosing one is an engine configuration choice, not evidence that the default run compares all of them. For a cross-engine check, run the scenarios against each engine you intend to cover and interpret each result against references made in a controlled environment.
Choose what “across browsers” needs to mean
Compare browser engines
For broad engine coverage, configure Playwright with the browser engine values chromium, firefox, or webkit. These are Playwright browser builds, not interchangeable names for every branded browser release.
#1 Best Overall
Match branded browser releases
Playwright documents branded Chrome and Edge channels as options. Its Firefox build uses patches and is not the branded Firefox; its WebKit build comes from the latest WebKit main branch and is not branded Safari. If the question is specifically about current Chrome or Edge releases, use the documented branded channel rather than assuming Chromium is identical. Browser binaries update with Playwright releases, so avoid treating a browser version as fixed across Playwright updates; consult the Playwright browser documentation.
Account for operating-system behavior
Browser engine alone does not determine every rendering result. Playwright notes that platform-dependent behavior, including media codec availability, can vary by operating system. It identifies macOS WebKit as closer to Safari than Linux WebKit for cases such as video playback. Choose the operating system based on the behavior you need to validate.

Set up scenarios and viewports
BackstopJS scenarios specify the URL and can define selectors, readiness conditions, and interactions before capture. Its configurable viewports let you capture the page at the dimensions that matter to your users. Start with a small, deliberate matrix rather than capturing every route and size indiscriminately:
- Choose representative pages and states, including relevant interactions or content variations.
- Set explicit viewports for the layouts you need to compare.
- Use selectors and readiness conditions so the screenshot reflects the intended component and finished page state.
- Keep the scenario, viewport, browser engine, browser version, and operating system consistent when interpreting a difference.
Consistency is especially important because BackstopJS warns that text can render differently across environments. Its Docker rendering option can help standardize captures shared across environments, but Docker alone does not make a result equivalent to every person’s installed branded browser.

Run a controlled comparison
- Initialize: run
backstop initin the project and configure the generated BackstopJS setup for your scenarios. - Define the capture: add the target URL, relevant selectors or readiness conditions, interactions, and viewports to the scenarios.
- Select the engine: use the documented Playwright engine configuration when you need Firefox or WebKit, and set
engineOptions.browsertochromium, firefox, orwebkit. For an engine change, the README says to use Playwright’sonBeforeandonReadyscripts. Configure a branded Chrome or Edge channel when branded-release fidelity is the goal. - Create references: capture and approve the intended baseline in the same controlled environment you plan to use for subsequent runs.
- Test: run
backstop testfor the configured scenario set and inspect the visual-difference report. - Review before approving: determine whether a diff is an intended design change or a change in page state, environment, or rendering. Run
backstop approveonly for changes you accept; it replaces the reference collection for future comparisons. - Repeat for other engines: perform a separate controlled reference-and-test cycle for each engine or channel you are comparing. The README documents the configuration choices and commands, but not an automatic all-browser matrix.
Make visual differences meaningful
When comparing results, hold constant the inputs that can change a screenshot independently of the code under review:
- Page state: same URL, selected content, interaction sequence, and readiness conditions.
- Dimensions: same viewport for a like-for-like comparison; compare different viewport sizes as separate cases.
- Rendering environment: same engine and browser version, operating system, and capture setup for a baseline and its test run.
- Reference policy: approve only changes that are intentional. A reference is a baseline, not proof that the page is correct.
If the comparison question is whether a layout behaves consistently across engines, different engines are intentional variables; keep the other inputs stable and treat each engine’s reference separately. If the question is whether a new change broke a specific browser, compare that browser’s test capture with its own established reference instead of treating a cross-engine visual difference as a regression by itself.

Troubleshoot common comparison problems
Unexpected differences in text
Text can render differently across environments. Check that the baseline and test use the same operating system, engine build, browser version, viewport, and rendering setup. BackstopJS’s Docker option can help standardize environments when several people or machines share captures.
Firefox or WebKit behaves unlike the branded browser
Playwright’s Firefox and WebKit builds are not the branded Firefox and Safari. If matching a branded Chrome or Edge release is the requirement, use the documented channel option. For Safari-adjacent behavior such as video playback, use macOS WebKit where appropriate; operating-system-dependent features can still matter.
Best Value
Captures show the wrong state or incomplete content
Review the scenario URL, selector, readiness condition, viewport, and interactions. A screenshot comparison only evaluates the state actually captured, so make the scenario wait for the relevant page content and perform the necessary interaction before relying on its diff.
Approving a diff makes later reports confusing
Approval updates the reference set. Before running backstop approve, inspect whether the difference is intended and ensure the capture conditions are comparable. If a baseline was captured in a different environment, restore a consistent setup before using it as the basis for future comparisons.
Or skip the browser setup
For a single screenshot rather than a BackstopJS reference-and-test workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot and page-information tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does BackstopJS compare all browsers automatically?
No. Its documented configuration selects an engine; run separate comparisons for the engines or channels you want to cover.
Is Playwright WebKit the same as Safari?
No. Playwright says its WebKit build is not branded Safari; macOS WebKit is closer for some platform-specific behavior such as video playback.
