Compare OBS and FFmpeg logs with YouTube’s timestamped stream-health errors on one timeline. Find the first event that appears to mark trouble, account for timezone and clock differences, then check whether local output stayed healthy. A matching timestamp is useful evidence, not proof of cause: an encoder issue, unstable connection, and YouTube ingest error can occur together or independently.
What the logs can—and cannot—tell you
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or the configured bitrate cannot be sustained; too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. That points toward delivery to ingest or available network capacity, but does not by itself identify the failing device or prove what caused the stream to go offline. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, explains the distinction.

FFmpeg output can provide evidence about the process, encoding, or output path, but its meaning depends on the command, build, version, and logging context. There is no universal FFmpeg message-to-cause mapping established here. Treat each line as one event in a sequence, not a diagnosis on its own.

YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room show stream errors next to the Health Indicator, with a timestamp for each error. YouTube says, “There’s a timestamp next to each error indicating when it was seen.” Red errors are critical and yellow errors moderate; read the actual message and its instructions rather than inferring that every stream setting is wrong. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.

Build a shared timeline before interpreting anything
- Preserve the evidence. Save the relevant OBS log and FFmpeg standard output and error around the incident. Keep the FFmpeg command line and version/build information with them. Redact stream keys and other credentials before sharing logs.
- Mark when the stream appeared to drop. Record the date, time, and timezone. Note any known system-clock offset; timestamps from different systems are not directly comparable until you account for timezone and possible clock differences.
- Find the earliest local warning or failure. In the actual text, look for the first apparent connection loss or dropped-frame event, encoder failure, process exit, or media/output error. Do not assume that a particular phrase is universal across OBS, FFmpeg versions, or commands.
- Check YouTube’s health history. In Live Dashboard or Live Control Room, find the timestamped Health Indicator messages for the same period. Record the full error wording and whether it points to stream format/settings or describes a broader health issue.
- Compare order as well as proximity. Note which event appears first and what follows. Near-simultaneous events may be related, but timestamp closeness alone does not establish which system caused the failure.
Classify the evidence by where it appears
| Evidence location | What it may point toward | What to corroborate |
|---|---|---|
| OBS connection or dropped-frame messages | An unstable path to the remote ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. | Whether local encoding and saved output remained healthy; whether connection symptoms began before YouTube’s message. |
| FFmpeg encoder/process output | An encoding, source, or output problem, depending on the command and the actual error. | Command, build/version, process exit timing, OBS behavior, and whether the saved local output has defects. |
| Local preview or saved archive | Whether the image and sound were already defective before delivery to YouTube. | Compare the same interval with encoder errors and CPU load. A clean local archive makes a local source/encoding fault less evident, but does not prove the network is at fault. |
| YouTube Health Indicator message | The specific ingest or stream-health condition YouTube reported, including possible configuration problems. | Read the message and follow its instructions; compare its timestamp with local evidence rather than treating it as a complete root-cause report. |
When YouTube reports a stream-format problem, its error catalog covers checks such as codec, bitrate, audio/video stream count, frame rate, resolution, and keyframe frequency. Which check matters depends on the message shown for that event. Do not change settings at random: unrelated changes can obscure the original evidence. See YouTube’s error catalog for the message and its recommended checks.
Follow the strongest clue with targeted checks
YouTube recommends checking the encoder version, stream image and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, local archive, and outbound internet connection. If local output appears healthy, investigate outbound connectivity; if problems persist, YouTube points to the ISP as a next area to investigate. The official steps are in YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Connection symptoms lead: OBS recommends targeted tests such as trying a different server or service, reducing bitrate to a level the stable upload capacity and service limits can sustain, and checking network-related settings or software. Change one relevant factor at a time so you can tell whether the evidence changes.
- Wi-Fi instability is plausible: compare with a wired connection if possible. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable and recommends wired networking; a router, cable, network card, or other device along the route may also contribute. Ethernet is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Local output is defective: focus on the source, encoder errors, and CPU load before attributing the incident to YouTube. Check whether the defect is present in the local archive and when it first appears.
- YouTube reports a setting error: use the exact error’s instructions to inspect the named stream properties. A setting warning is evidence about what YouTube received, not necessarily an explanation for every local log symptom.
Keep analytics separate from incident logs
Stream status and its specific error messages are the more direct evidence for a live incident. YouTube’s post-stream metrics and Analytics report are separate views: Analytics data is based on Video ID, processed and despammed, and may measure different information from Live Control Room. Viewer analytics can provide context, but should not be mistaken for a diagnostic log. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.
Write a conclusion that matches the evidence
State the sequence, the corroborating evidence, and what remains uncertain. For example: “The local connection-drop evidence begins near YouTube’s health error; the local archive appears intact, so the outbound path is the next area to investigate.” Avoid declaring “YouTube caused the drop” unless evidence beyond timestamp proximity supports that conclusion.

FFmpeg details needed for version-specific advice
Without the actual FFmpeg command, version/build, and safely redacted log excerpt, it is not possible to prescribe one exact logging invocation or interpret a particular message reliably. The FFmpeg documentation covers its command-line behavior; use the documentation appropriate to the build and options involved. If asking for help, include those details and the matching OBS and YouTube timestamps, but never post a stream key or credentials.
