To compare mobile screenshots fairly, capture the same page, content and interaction state on iOS and Android, record each browser and device environment, and judge differences against your design requirements—not against a single pixel-perfect baseline. Keep visual-regression baselines separate for each environment: a cross-platform diff can flag expected system-font, form-control or scrollbar differences alongside genuine layout defects.
Decide what the comparison is meant to prove
A visual regression check asks whether a page changed from its approved appearance in the same environment. A cross-platform comparison asks how the page renders in different environments. Those are related but different questions: use a matching-environment baseline to detect regressions, then compare iOS and Android to find platform-specific problems.

Playwright recommends capturing and comparing screenshots in the same environment because rendering can vary with the host operating system and other conditions. Keep separate reference images for each browser/platform combination you intend to test. A raw iOS-versus-Android pixel diff is evidence of visual change, not a verdict that the change is a bug. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance explains the same-environment principle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet up a fair iOS-to-Android comparison
- Match the test case. Use the same URL, content state, login state, orientation, scroll position and interaction state on both sides. Include pages and states where layout or important actions matter, such as a navigation menu open or a form showing validation.
- Choose equivalent viewport intent. Compare the intended responsive layouts, not just arbitrarily similar pixel dimensions. Record the viewport and device used; a physical handset’s screen and browser chrome may differ from an emulator’s settings.
- Record the environment with each capture. Note device or emulation profile, operating system and version, browser and version, viewport, orientation, and capture conditions. BrowserStack’s configuration documentation identifies OS name, OS version, browser name and browser version as platform attributes. See its cross-browser visual testing documentation.
- Stabilize page state. Wait for fonts, images and content to settle; make changing content deterministic or mask only known volatile regions. Keep important content visible to the comparison rather than masking large areas to quiet diffs.
- Capture and label each image. Include enough environment detail in filenames or test metadata to distinguish, for example, an iOS Safari capture from an Android Chrome capture.
Choose emulation or real-device capture
Use emulation for fast, repeatable responsive checks
Playwright device profiles can configure simulated parameters such as user agent, screen size, viewport and touch. That makes emulation useful for checking responsive behavior and running repeatable automated tests. It does not establish how a physical iPhone or Android handset renders the page. Label such results as emulated evidence. Playwright’s emulation documentation describes the parameters it can simulate.

Use real devices when actual mobile-browser rendering matters
For bugs reported on a handset or questions about actual mobile browser behavior, verify on real devices. BrowserStack Percy documents separate screenshots per mobile device and browser, with Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android (Beta) listed in its documentation. It says mobile screenshot width is fixed to the real device and portrait mode is the default. Mobile browser capture has a plan requirement; check current device coverage and plan eligibility before adopting the service. BrowserStack’s mobile browser testing documentation describes its current documented behavior.
Manual review on an available phone is also useful for spot checks or reproducing a report; buying a particular model is not a prerequisite for the workflow.

Automate repeatable screenshots with Playwright
Playwright Test can save a reference screenshot on the first run and compare later runs with toHaveScreenshot(). A minimal test can look like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('mobile home page matches its environment baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 390, height: 844 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Run the same test in distinct configured browser/device environments and retain a baseline for each one; do not treat one platform’s baseline as the other’s. Keep the runtime conditions stable where possible: Playwright notes that host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode can affect rendering. Its screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, and screenshot options support a stylesheet for filtering volatile elements. Use filters narrowly and review baseline changes deliberately. Read the Playwright visual comparisons guide.

Review diffs without mistaking platform rendering for a defect
Compare captures side by side, with an overlay, or in a diff view. BrowserStack documents these review views for web visual analysis. Its web visual testing guide describes the review workflow.
System fonts, native form controls and scrollbars can vary between operating systems, so some visible differences are expected. Investigate changes that undermine the page’s behavior or design intent: clipped headings, overlapping content, missing calls to action, unexpected wrapping, unreadable contrast or broken controls. Decide whether each change is intentional before accepting a new baseline.

First compare like with like—same route, state, orientation and intended viewport—then assess the two platforms against the product’s responsive and design requirements. Do not suppress broad regions simply to reduce noise; mask only known volatile content and preserve areas where regressions matter.

Choose a capture approach for the job
| Approach | Best fit | Boundary to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright screenshots and emulation | Teams using browser automation that want fast, repeatable checks and committed baselines. | Emulation simulates selected parameters; maintain environment-specific baselines and do not present it as a physical-device capture. |
| Hosted real-device visual testing | Teams needing repeatable captures from actual mobile devices and browsers. | Coverage, browser availability and plan access vary; BrowserStack documents Chrome on Android as Beta for its mobile browser capture. |
| Manual device review | Spot checks and reproducing a report on a handset. | Results are less automated; record the device, OS and browser so others can interpret the image. |
Compare options by whether capture is emulated or real-device, which OS/browser/device versions are covered, whether baselines are separated by environment, how capture noise is controlled, what review workflow is available, and any service or plan requirements.

Troubleshoot misleading or noisy comparisons
- Large diff despite no intended change: confirm the host OS, browser, viewport, headless mode and other runtime conditions match the baseline; rendering can vary across them.
- Only a font, control or scrollbar differs: check whether it is an OS-level rendering variation before changing the page or accepting a baseline.
- Text shifts between runs: wait for fonts and dynamic content to settle; make volatile content deterministic or apply a narrow screenshot stylesheet filter.
- A test passes in emulation but fails on a phone: treat that as a reason to inspect the real browser/device rather than evidence that the emulation was a real-device test.
- A diff view is noisy everywhere: verify that the URL, login/content state, orientation, scroll position and interaction state are equivalent before masking anything.
- A changed baseline appears intentional: review the affected regions against product requirements and approve only after confirming the visible change is expected.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; the example below captures the Android- or iOS-specific URL you want to inspect. For a controlled cross-platform comparison, keep viewport and relevant page state consistent, and use the browser/device-specific capture method appropriate to your test.
Install no browser automation just to make a one-off capture: replace the URL and API key, then save the returned image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot diff tell me whether a change is a bug?
No. It identifies visual change; judge that change against behavior and design requirements.
Do I need to buy an Android phone to compare iOS and Android screenshots?
No. Emulation supports quick checks, while real-device review is useful when actual handset rendering is the question.
