For a logged-in visual comparison, first establish the same authenticated state each run, then choose whether the banner should be dismissed as part of the test or excluded from comparison. In Playwright, the most faithful choice is to wait for a predictable consent banner and use the site’s normal dismiss action before capturing. A screenshot mask only covers the banner with a colored block; it does not remove it.
Decide what the screenshot is supposed to test
If the checkpoint represents the page after consent, handle consent in the test flow and capture the resulting logged-in page. If consent behavior or the banner’s appearance is under test, leave it visible and test it separately. If the banner is irrelevant to a broader page comparison, use a narrowly scoped exclusion—but check that it does not hide a real layout regression.
There is no universal cookie-banner selector or consent action. Inspect the application and use its actual button, dialog, or other consent control.
Set up a repeatable logged-in state
Use the same deliberate authentication setup for every run: for example, a test fixture or setup hook that signs in or restores an authenticated state. Keep the test account and relevant page data stable so differences in account content are not mistaken for visual changes. Playwright’s best practices describe setup hooks for common actions such as login.

Dismiss a predictable banner in Playwright
When the banner reliably appears and the test is intended to cover the post-consent page, wait for its real locator and click the normal consent or dismiss control before taking the screenshot. Playwright recommends this for predictable overlays rather than relying on page.addLocatorHandler() (see its best practices).
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('logged-in page after consent', async ({ page }) => {
// Establish authentication through the test's normal setup or fixture.
await page.goto('https://example.com/account');
// Replace these with locators and actions used by the actual application.
const consentDialog = page.getByRole('dialog', { name: 'Cookie preferences' });
await expect(consentDialog).toBeVisible();
await consentDialog.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept' }).click();
await expect(consentDialog).toBeHidden();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-after-consent.png', {
fullPage: true
});
});
The example uses illustrative locators and an example URL, not selectors guaranteed to work on every site. Substitute the application’s real dialog name, button, authenticated setup, and stable page landmark. If the site stores consent between visits, arrange the test’s storage or browser context so each run starts in the intended state; otherwise a previously stored choice may prevent the banner from appearing.

Mask or ignore the banner when dismissal is out of scope
Playwright mask: cover, not remove
Playwright screenshot options accept locators to mask. The locator’s bounding box is covered with the configured mask color (pink by default). The colored block remains in the screenshot, so this is useful for suppressing changing content, not for producing an image in which the banner area looks as though the banner never existed. See the Page API.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-masked.png', {
mask: [page.getByRole('dialog', { name: 'Cookie preferences' })],
fullPage: true
});
Use the banner locator that actually exists on the page. A mask can also obscure nearby content if the selected element’s bounding box is larger than expected; inspect the captured artifact before relying on the baseline.
Ignored regions in visual-testing services
Applitools documents ignored regions and element-region checks in its Playwright integration. Percy documents ignored selectors, XPath and custom-coordinate regions in its Playwright client repository. These exclusions affect the service’s comparison workflow; confirm how the selected region is defined and reviewed in your actual integration.
Temporary capture-time CSS
Percy also documents percyCSS for applying CSS during a snapshot. A carefully scoped rule can be appropriate when the capture pipeline is under your control, but verify its effect on layout and avoid treating it as equivalent to exercising the site’s consent flow. Remove or constrain temporary styling so it cannot conceal a page defect.

Choose the capture scope and review exclusions
- Use a full-page capture when the whole page is the subject; use a component or region checkpoint when only that area matters. Playwright supports screenshot assertions, and Applitools documents full-page and element-region checks.
- Exclude only the banner region needed for the comparison. Review the screenshot or comparison result to ensure the exclusion has not hidden a genuine layout issue.
- If the banner’s appearance or consent behavior matters, keep it in a dedicated test rather than excluding it from every checkpoint.

For a direct capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and can return an image or PDF. Its API can establish a logged-in request using supplied cookies or other supported authentication parameters, but this is not a substitute for running your application’s normal interactive login flow when that flow itself is under test. ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. CAPTCHA or bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting
- The banner never appears: The browser context may already contain a stored consent choice, or the page may not show the banner in this state. Reset or seed the test state deliberately and confirm the expected behavior before the checkpoint.
- The click times out: Check that the banner locator and button name match the rendered page, that the test has reached the correct authenticated route, and that the action is actually available in this consent state.
- The screenshot still shows a block: That is expected when using Playwright’s
mask; it paints over the locator rather than removing the element from the image. - The comparison changes between runs: Stabilize the login and page data, use consistent browser and OS versions, and wait for the intended page state before capturing. Avoid broad exclusions that might hide the change you need to detect.
- Masking hides useful content: Narrow the locator or use a more precise ignored region in the visual-testing integration, then inspect the resulting checkpoint.
