Start with your operating system and applications, then compare the exact CPU and graphics configuration, RAM, storage, screen, battery evidence, ports, upgradeability, and price for equivalent configurations.
Start with your software and workload
List your main tasks before comparing models: web browsing and office work, school applications, photo or video editing, software development, or gaming. Then check that the operating system and exact applications you need are supported. Operating-system choice can affect hardware and ecosystem compatibility; Consumer Reports’ laptop buying guide discusses these platform trade-offs.

For Windows 11, Microsoft’s current requirements page lists minimum eligibility requirements including a supported processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, compatible graphics, a qualifying display, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. These are compatibility floors, not recommendations for every workload or application. Check the Windows 11 system requirements and the requirements for your own software.
Compare CPU and graphics against the work
Do not assume that processor names at the same marketing tier—or chips from different release years or manufacturers—mean equivalent performance. Compare the exact processor generation and configuration, and seek benchmark results for workloads like yours. For games, check the games’ own requirements and compare relevant component specifications. Intel’s gaming laptop guidance recommends looking at specifications such as core count and clock speed and using benchmarks to inform comparisons.

A dedicated graphics processor is most relevant to demanding 3D games and some creative workloads. For browsing, email, streaming, homework, and light office work, it may add cost without addressing a real need. Treat graphics as a workload decision, not a feature that is automatically better for every buyer.
Choose enough RAM and storage for your use
RAM is active workspace
RAM holds the information applications are using now; storage holds installed software and saved files. Intel gives 8 GB of RAM as a baseline for average use and 16 GB as a better baseline for more intensive productivity or gaming. These are Intel’s manufacturer recommendations, not independent test findings or universal requirements. Check the needs of your applications and allow for how many tasks you typically keep open. Intel’s home-use laptop guide explains its guidance.
Storage holds your files and applications
Estimate how much room you need for local photos, videos, games, and project files, taking your cloud-storage habits into account. Intel describes SSDs as faster and more durable than mechanical hard drives in typical laptop use, while noting that higher capacities cost more. Cloud storage can help, but it does not guarantee that a small internal drive will suit every workflow. Microsoft’s PC and device terms glossary explains common storage terminology.

Check what can be upgraded
Before buying, confirm whether the exact configuration lets you replace or expand its RAM and storage, or whether components are soldered in place. Intel cautions that laptop internals may not be easy to upgrade after purchase. If you cannot upgrade later, choosing adequate memory and storage upfront matters more.
Assess the screen, portability, and battery together
Compare screen size and resolution, panel type, brightness and color needs, and whether you need touch or a convertible design. A larger or more feature-rich display can affect both price and portability. Weigh those benefits against the laptop’s size and weight, especially if you carry it often.
Battery-life figures depend on workload and settings; advertised hours are not a promise of everyday runtime. Look for results for the exact model and configuration from reviews that disclose their test methods. Brightness, workload, network use, and other test conditions can change the result, so do not treat figures from unlike tests as directly comparable. Intel says its manufacturer estimates are general guidance and recommends checking reviews of devices under consideration in its laptop buying guide.

Check ports, connectivity, and platform fit
Make a list of the connections you rely on: monitors, external drives, accessories, and wireless networks. Verify that the laptop has the ports and wireless standards those devices need. If you plan to connect high-speed external storage or 4K displays, Intel specifically recommends checking Thunderbolt compatibility.
Windows offers a broader range of laptop hardware choices, while macOS is available on Apple laptops; Consumer Reports also notes the integration benefits macOS can offer people using other Apple products. Check current software requirements and compatibility with the devices you already own rather than choosing a platform on ecosystem reputation alone.
Compare prices only after matching configurations
Put the configurations side by side and compare memory, storage, display, graphics, warranty, and operating-system version. A lower sticker price may come with less memory or storage, a different screen, or hardware aimed at another workload. A dedicated GPU, OLED or higher-resolution display, or larger drive can affect both cost and suitability. Compare like with like, then decide which differences are worth paying for; there is no single best configuration independent of what you do.
