How to Compare iPhone Sizes and Weights Before You Upgrade

Screen diagonal is not the whole story. Compare your current iPhone and upgrade candidates by height, width, depth and weight, and account for the case you plan to use.

Compare the exact models’ height, width, depth and weight—not just their screen sizes. Display diagonal tells you how large the screen is, but it does not tell you how much space the phone takes up or how heavy it will feel to carry. Apple publishes those device measurements on its comparison pages, with the qualification that size and weight can vary by configuration and manufacturing process.

Compare the dimensions that affect fit and feel

  • Width: A useful check for grip and one-handed reach.
  • Height: Shows the phone’s overall length and helps you judge its footprint.
  • Depth: Shows thickness, which can affect how the phone sits in your hand or pocket.
  • Weight: Gives you a direct comparison of the mass you will carry.
  • Display diagonal: Describes screen size, not the phone’s complete physical size.

Apple’s stated diagonal is measured on a standard rectangular screen shape; the actual viewable area is smaller. Two phones with similar screen labels—or the same “Plus” or “Pro Max” label—can still differ in their outside dimensions and weight. [Apple’s iPhone model identification page]

Use a side-by-side comparison

Start with your current iPhone, then compare each upgrade candidate using the same units. These Apple-published measurements are in millimetres and grams. Specifications can vary by configuration and manufacturing process. [Apple iPhone comparison] [Apple Australia iPhone comparison]

Model Screen diagonal Height Width Depth Weight
iPhone 13 mini 5.42 in 131.5 mm 64.2 mm 7.65 mm 141 g
iPhone 13 not stated 146.7 mm 71.5 mm 7.65 mm 174 g
iPhone 15 Plus not stated 160.9 mm 77.8 mm 7.80 mm 201 g
iPhone 13 Pro Max 6.68 in 160.8 mm 78.1 mm 7.65 mm 240 g
iPhone 16 Pro Max 6.86 in 163 mm 77.6 mm 8.25 mm 227 g
iPhone 16 not stated 147.6 mm 71.6 mm 7.80 mm 170 g

Screen diagonals shown above follow Apple’s model-identification information; Apple’s comparison pages provide the listed device dimensions and weights. Apple’s identification page also lists 5.42 inches for iPhone 12 mini, 6.55 inches for iPhone Air, 6.68 inches for iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 12 Pro Max, and 6.86 inches for iPhone 17 Pro Max. Those figures are screen measurements, not device height or width. [Apple iPhone model identification]

Read the numbers in context

A larger model name does not guarantee a heavier phone

Apple lists iPhone 13 Pro Max at 160.8 × 78.1 × 7.65 mm and 240 g, and iPhone 16 Pro Max at 163 × 77.6 × 8.25 mm and 227 g. On those published specifications, the newer model is taller and thicker, slightly narrower, and lighter. Screen diagonal alone would not reveal those differences.

Compare a compact phone with a large one

The iPhone 13 mini measures 131.5 × 64.2 × 7.65 mm and weighs 141 g; the iPhone 15 Plus measures 160.9 × 77.8 × 7.80 mm and weighs 201 g. The figures make the change in footprint and mass easier to assess than screen labels do.

Account for the case you will use

A case adds bulk and weight. For a fair comparison, either compare both phones without cases or use the cases you intend to carry on each. If width, weight or the feel of the camera area is especially important to you, handle the exact model before buying if possible; published specifications cannot establish how comfortable it will feel in your hand.

Check the exact model and region

Use Apple’s comparison tool to select your current iPhone and the specific upgrade candidates, rather than relying on a broad generation label. Apple’s comparison pages can change as products and regional lineups change, and a page listing a model does not by itself establish availability or the exact configuration sold in your region. Confirm the model and configuration offered where you plan to buy.
