Apple’s playback figures, a cellular web-browsing test and a YouTube-streaming estimate measure different things. Choose the test that resembles your use, then compare models within that test—not by putting every published hour in one leaderboard.
Start with the workload you want to compare
Battery life depends on what the phone is doing. A downloaded movie played locally puts different demands on a phone than video streamed over a network, websites loaded over cellular, or a varied day of apps and idle time. Before comparing numbers, identify what each test runs, how it connects, and how its runtime is measured.

- Downloaded-video playback: useful for comparing sustained local video playback under the test’s stated settings. It does not mean the same number of hours of ordinary screen-on use.
- Streamed video: includes network activity as well as playback, so it may better resemble watching online video. Results still depend on the network and the test’s settings.
- Cellular web browsing: repeated page loads test a different pattern of radio and display use than continuous video.
- Mixed-use estimates: aim to represent varied activity, but depend on the usage profile and method used to produce the estimate.
Apple cautions that battery life varies with use, configuration, cellular network and signal strength, among other factors. Its official test disclosures are useful precisely because they describe a controlled workload; they should not be mistaken for a promise of how long a particular person’s phone will last.

What Apple’s playback figures do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s video-playback disclosure describes repeated purchased HDR movies and specifies conditions including LTE/5G subscriptions, Bluetooth headphones and Wi-Fi association. Wi-Fi Ask to Join Networks, Auto-Brightness and True Tone are turned off. This is a defined playback test, not a measurement of general screen-on time or a typical day. Apple’s iPhone battery test disclosures also describe a separate typical-use profile dated August 2026, based on median user usage and a mixture of passive and active apps. That profile is distinct from the repeated-movie playback test.

Cellular website cycling: TechRadar
TechRadar’s 2026 test cycled websites over cellular until the phones depleted. The test disabled location services, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and iOS battery management. Within that one protocol, it reported:

How to decide whether two results are comparable
Check these details before drawing a conclusion. If an article does not state a detail, treat the comparison as less informative rather than assuming the conditions match.
- Workload: local playback, streaming, browser cycling or mixed use?
- Network and signal: Wi-Fi or cellular, which network generation, and what signal conditions?
- Display and audio: what brightness, display features, resolution or sound setup did the test use?
- Software and battery condition: which software version and battery state or health? A newer or healthier battery can affect runtime.
- Region and model variant: do the model names and regional versions match the devices you are considering?
- Measurement and date: did the phone run continuously until depletion, or did the publisher estimate total endurance from a shorter test? When was it tested?
When the protocol matches, its within-test ranking is the soundest comparison available. When protocols differ, report each result with its workload and method; do not calculate a combined score or declare a cross-publication winner. The published examples above do not constitute a matched test of every current iPhone under one common protocol.
Which iPhone has the best battery life?
The answer depends on the workload and test. Among the models in TechRadar’s cellular website-cycling test, iPhone 18 Pro Max recorded the longest runtime. In PhoneArena’s YouTube-based endurance estimates, iPhone 18 Pro Max also had the longest estimate among the three listed models. Tom’s Guide’s side-by-side result favors iPhone 18 Pro Max over iPhone 16 Pro Max in its own drain test. Those findings support comparisons within each named test; they do not prove a universal winner across all use cases.
For a purchase decision, prioritize the protocol closest to your routine—streaming if you watch online video, cellular browsing if you spend much of the day on the mobile network, or Apple’s disclosed playback test if local video matters. Treat any difference between models as test-specific, because network conditions, configuration and use change real-world endurance.
