For concrete examples, this guide uses the iPhone 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17. Their specifications are manufacturer claims, not results from a controlled head-to-head test, and the comparison does not automatically apply to other models.

Start with the exact models and regional versions
“iPhone versus Xiaomi” is too broad to answer as a camera-quality comparison. Hardware, camera layouts, and available features vary by model; Xiaomi also notes that camera layout and features may differ across devices in its phone camera overview. Confirm the exact model and local version you can buy, then compare those two devices rather than generalizing from a flagship to an entire brand.

What the iPhone 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 specifications tell you
The following are examples of manufacturer-published specifications, accessed in 2026. They describe camera hardware and advertised capabilities; they are not independent measurements of image quality.

Terms such as “optical-quality” and “optical-level” are the manufacturers’ wording; do not silently treat them as proof of identical hardware or results. A higher megapixel number is not an overall quality score. It does not by itself tell you which phone retains more useful detail, renders color more naturally, handles motion better, or records video that suits your needs.

Model-specific coverage is important even within a brand. For example, Xiaomi’s UK page for the Xiaomi 15 lists a 23mm main camera, 60mm floating telephoto, and 14mm ultra-wide—not the Xiaomi 17’s listed 17mm ultra-wide. See the Xiaomi 15 UK specifications only if that is the model you are considering; do not combine its figures with a Xiaomi 17 comparison.
How to make a useful side-by-side camera test
Take both phones to the same place and photograph the same subjects, keeping viewpoint, lighting, and framing as consistent as possible. A stable mount can help repeat still shots from the same position, but it is optional and does not make handheld video tests equivalent. Start with each phone’s default automatic settings, since that is how many people shoot; then test separate modes only if you expect to use them.

- Match the output. Compare like with like: default processed photos against default processed photos, or equivalent video settings against one another. Do not treat one phone’s processed JPEG and the other phone’s RAW file as equivalent outputs.
- Record the camera and zoom setting. Note which lens or zoom level you selected and compare similar fields of view. Include each phone’s widest camera and the focal lengths you actually use.
- Repeat across relevant scenes. Photograph daylight detail, high-contrast light and shadow, low light, people, moving subjects, close-ups, and selfies. Add ultra-wide and telephoto shots if those cameras matter to you.
- Test video independently. Record comparable clips while walking and with a stationary subject. Pay attention to stabilization, exposure transitions, focus changes, sound, resolution and frame-rate choices, and front-camera output.
- Review the original files. Inspect images at the same framing on a suitable display rather than choosing solely from the camera preview. Check both the best result and whether the phone produces it consistently across repeated shots.
What to judge in the photos
Detail, texture, and difficult light
Look for fine texture in hair, foliage, fabric, and small objects at the same framing. In high-contrast scenes, check whether bright skies, lamps, or windows retain detail while shadows remain usable. In low light, compare noise, color, motion blur, and consistency—not just how bright the phone makes the scene look.
People and moving subjects
For portraits, assess exposure, skin tones, hair detail, and whether the subject separates cleanly from the background. Then photograph someone walking, a pet, or a child. Check focus reliability and blur: a visually pleasing still scene is not enough if the camera often misses the moment you want.

Field of view and zoom
Compare the widest camera and the zoom settings you use in practice. A wider ultra-wide can fit more into the frame, while a longer focal length can make a distant subject larger without moving closer. Keep three different ideas separate when reading specifications or judging samples: a dedicated optical camera, a crop or “optical-quality” option, and digital zoom. The labels alone do not tell you which result you will prefer; inspect matched real-world framing.

Video strengths do not necessarily track still-photo strengths. Compare walking stabilization, how smoothly exposure changes when moving between light and shade, how focus shifts, and whether sound is clear in the situations where you record. Check the available resolution and frame-rate choices and try the front camera if you vlog or make frequent calls.

Finally, consider the camera as part of your routine: how quickly it opens, how responsive the shutter feels, which controls and file formats are available, and how easily your photos and videos fit your transfer, editing, work, or social-media habits. A feature matters most when it is both available on your exact model and useful in your workflow.
What these examples can—and cannot—establish
Apple’s and Xiaomi’s product pages document their own listed hardware and features. They do not establish which phone produces better photos or video overall. The specifications above therefore identify what to compare, not a winner. A definitive model-to-model verdict would require a recent, credible test with comparable samples or clearly explained test conditions for the specific models, software, camera modes, and scenes in question.
