An industrial arm is a manipulator chosen for a particular reach, payload and task. A humanoid has a human-like body plan, often with arms and legs for moving through spaces designed for people. A cobot is an industrial robot used in a collaborative application; the term describes how people and the robot work together, not a guarantee that the robot or cell needs no safeguards.

What is the difference between a humanoid robot and an industrial robot?
“Industrial robot” is the broadest category here. It includes purpose-built manipulators such as fixed robotic arms, as well as collaborative robots used in industrial applications. “Humanoid” describes a body plan, not a specific level of industrial performance or safety certification.
An arm is generally selected around a defined manipulation task: its mounting point, reach, payload, end effector, cycle requirements and control system. A humanoid adds whole-body movement and human-scale access as potential capabilities. Those may matter in a facility laid out for people, but they do not establish that the robot can perform a particular job reliably or economically.

A cobot, short for collaborative robot, is used in an application where people and automation share some part of a task or workspace. Whether that arrangement is appropriate depends on the robot, tool, workpiece, layout, task and safeguards together. A “collaborative” label alone does not establish that a complete cell can operate without protective measures.
How should you compare the three options?
Start with the work and compare complete systems. NIST’s work on collaborative teams recommends breaking down tasks and evaluating the costs and benefits of collaborative arrangements against traditional installations. Use the same task definition and acceptance criteria for every candidate.
| Comparison point | Industrial robotic arm | Cobot application | Humanoid robot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Likely fit to investigate | Known, repeatable manipulation from a fixed mounting point. | A defined task in which a worker and robot need to share parts of the work or workspace. | A task or route that may benefit from human-scale access or movement through people-oriented infrastructure; this is a potential fit to test, not a proven general advantage. |
| What to specify | Reach envelope, payload including tooling, end effector, cycle time, repeatability, controller and cell layout. | The same task and robot details, plus the shared-workspace arrangement, human role, safeguards and coordination. | Task success, whole-body movement, handling capability, obstacle and floor conditions, interventions, charging and fault recovery. |
| Performance to compare | Acceptable units per hour, cycle time, quality, uptime and recovery after interruptions. | Those same measures, including whether collaboration improves the overall task rather than only one robot motion. | Those same measures over sustained operation, not just a demonstration; include productive uptime, human interventions and charge or recovery time. |
| Key trade-off to test | A purpose-built system may fit a stable operation well, but flexibility and changeover depend on its design and integration. | EU-OSHA identifies flexibility and easier installation or reallocation as possible benefits, with typical trade-offs in force capacity, load, working range or speed versus traditional robots. These are category-level tendencies, not guarantees for an individual model. | Potential ability to address multiple tasks or human-oriented spaces must be weighed against maturity, integration, maintenance, battery and uptime concerns identified by Gartner in January 2026. |
| Safety and integration | Assess the guarded or otherwise safeguarded cell, tooling, parts, controls and worker access. | Validate the collaborative application, including task, workspace, controls and organisational measures; do not infer safety from the product label. | Assess the moving robot, tool and workpiece, routes, people nearby, fault behavior, energy and site-specific conditions. |
The table is a starting point, not a substitute for model-specific data. NIST emphasizes task performance, role allocation, coordination and overall system effectiveness; EU-OSHA describes collaborative use as an application-level issue.

Which measures make the comparison fair?
Measure completed, acceptable work over representative operating conditions. A fast motion or successful pick in a demonstration is not the same as dependable production output.
- Define the job: list task steps, parts and their variation, exceptions, environment, handoffs and the work currently performed by people.
- Set output and quality criteria: specify acceptable units per hour, cycle time, first-pass quality, precision or repeatability where relevant, and how rejected or incomplete work is counted.
- Measure availability in context: track productive hours, uptime, stoppages, human interventions, recovery time, changeover time and the supervision the system requires.
- Account for integration: include controls and interfaces, sensing, layout changes, commissioning, cybersecurity requirements, tooling and the work needed to coordinate equipment in the cell.
- Compare lifecycle economics: include installed equipment and integration, safety measures, energy, maintenance, consumables, quality losses, labor retained and useful life. Calculate cost per acceptable completed task rather than comparing hardware prices alone.
- Check the environment: record floor surfaces, ramps, obstacles, temperature, dust, washdown or cleanroom requirements, and network policies. A machine’s performance in a different setting may not transfer to yours.
No universal purchase price, payback figure or controlled head-to-head trial across representative humanoids, arms and cobots is established by the cited sources. Gartner offers a broad relative assessment rather than a quote or result for every task: in January 2026 it said current humanoids cost multiple times more than task-specific polyfunctional robots while delivering lower throughput and uptime. Treat that as Gartner’s assessment, not a universal price ratio or a measured outcome for a specific installation.
Should you use a cobot or an industrial robot?
Choose based on the application rather than the name. A conventional industrial arm is a sensible baseline for repeatable manipulation in a defined cell. A cobot application is worth evaluating when a worker and automation need to share a task or workspace, or when flexibility or redeployment is valuable. Compare the actual models and full workcell: the typical force, load, range and speed trade-offs EU-OSHA describes can make a collaborative arrangement unsuitable for a task that needs more capacity or faster operation.

For either option, decide what the worker does, where people can be during operation, how the system stops or responds to a fault, and how the task changes over time. NIST’s approach is to assess collaborative teams by objectives, task roles, coordination and system-level effectiveness—not by the robot in isolation.

How should you assess safety?
Safety is a property of the application and workplace, not a visual impression or product category. Assess the robot and its end effector, workpiece, layout, control and stopping behavior, human proximity, foreseeable faults and the organization of the work. NIOSH identifies potential robot-related hazards including struck-by, caught-between, crushing, trapping, slipping, falling and electrical risks. EU-OSHA likewise treats the robot and collaborative task as part of the broader application.
In the United States, NIOSH reports 41 robot-related workplace fatalities from 1992 through 2017, citing Layne’s 2023 analysis. This is historical context, not an annual rate or a humanoid-specific count.

For standards and legal scope, EU-OSHA’s current page describes EN ISO 10218-1:2025 as setting robot safety requirements and ISO 10218-2:2025 as covering safeguarding through integration, installation, functional testing, programming, operation, maintenance and repair. It says the 2025 revisions incorporate collaborative-robot requirements previously set out in ISO/TS 15066. EU-OSHA also says Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 is scheduled to apply to machinery from January 20, 2027. Confirm the applicable edition, harmonisation status and legal obligations for the installation’s jurisdiction; a benchmark or product claim does not replace a site-specific risk assessment or conformity obligations.

Humanoids may be worth investigating where a task benefits from human-scale movement or access, or where one system might cover multiple operations without extensive cell redesign. Those are hypotheses to validate at the site. Gartner’s January 21, 2026 assessment describes current systems as limited in dexterity and adaptability, with costly integration and maintenance, battery constraints, and weaker throughput and uptime than task-specific alternatives.
Gartner forecast on January 21, 2026 that fewer than 20 companies would bring humanoids into production for manufacturing or supply-chain applications by 2028. It also forecast fewer than 100 companies would progress humanoid proofs of concept beyond experimentation through 2028, with most production use remaining in tightly controlled environments. These are forecasts, not final tallies or proof about every application.

Independent testing can help make a vendor claim more specific. In a May 27, 2026 benchmark announcement, Fraunhofer IPA reported results for a particular Unitree G1 EDU-4 configuration and tested firmware. The unit exceeded 500 newtons in collision tests, above the pain thresholds allowed by the standard referenced in the announcement. Fraunhofer also reported a maximum operating time of 2 hours 49 minutes while standing still and 1 hour 49 minutes in a scenario combining standing and walking. These results apply to that tested configuration, not to humanoids as a category.
Fraunhofer’s benchmark covers capabilities, complex tasks, cleanroom suitability, functional safety, cybersecurity and energy efficiency. The institute says the market is too volatile and opaque for a well-founded assessment of humanoids for specific applications. Its testing draws on standards where possible, including ISO 14644 for cleanroom suitability and ISO 10218 / ISO/TS 15066 for functional safety. Such testing can inform selection, but it does not establish compliance or safety for a different setup at your site.
How should you run a pilot?
Set pass/fail criteria before a pilot begins, and require operational records rather than relying on a polished demonstration. Gartner recommends pilots before scaling humanoid deployments; the same discipline makes comparisons among any robot categories more useful.

Quick Recap
- Record the baseline: document current acceptable output, quality, cycle and changeover times, interruptions, labor and supervision for the task.
- Use representative work: include normal variation, exceptions, real parts and actual site conditions such as floors, routes, obstacles and handoffs.
- Agree on acceptance measures: set minimum acceptable output and quality, and define how to count downtime, interventions, recovery, charging and supervision.
- Validate safety and integration: review the complete task and workcell, confirm fault behavior and safeguards, and check control interfaces, cybersecurity and site requirements.
- Track the whole operating period: log task success, uptime, cycle time, quality, interventions, maintenance, recovery and energy rather than selecting only successful runs.
- Calculate lifecycle value: use installed and operating costs alongside labor retained, quality losses and useful life; compare the result with the baseline and the alternative system.
Which robot should you choose?
- Start with an industrial arm when the job is known, repeatable and centered on manipulation from a fixed location.
- Evaluate a cobot application when a defined, validated task calls for people and automation to share work or workspace, and its capacity and operating characteristics meet the job.
- Pilot a humanoid only when a measurable human-environment or multi-task advantage could justify its additional integration and operating complexity—and require sustained, site-specific performance evidence before scaling.
