To compare Happo screenshots from two branches, compare the Happo reports for the commits at the tips of those branches. Happo’s documented API takes two report SHA identifiers—not branch names—and returns changed, added, deleted, and unchanged snapshots, plus a comparison URL. You can start a comparison with POST /api/reports/:sha1/compare/:sha2. Happo API reference
What you need before comparing
- A Happo report for each commit you want to inspect. A branch name alone is not the identifier accepted by the documented comparison endpoint.
- The two report SHA values associated with those commits. Find them in the relevant report or CI output; Happo’s API reference documents the endpoint but does not establish a universal dashboard path or button for locating a SHA.
- Comparable rendering conditions, especially browser and viewport, so a difference is less likely to come from setup rather than code.
Happo supports CI and pull-request review workflows, and documents integrations including Storybook, Cypress, and Playwright. Whether a baseline is selected automatically depends on the integration; do not assume branch comparison or baseline selection works the same way in every provider. Happo

Compare two Happo reports by SHA
- Run or locate Happo reports for the two commits you intend to compare, such as the base-branch commit and the feature-branch commit.
- Record the report SHA for each commit. Confirm that each SHA corresponds to the intended commit before comparing.
- Send an authenticated
POSTrequest to/api/reports/:sha1/compare/:sha2, substituting the two report SHAs and any project or comparison settings your setup requires. Follow Happo’s API reference for authentication and request details: https://happo.io/docs/api. - Inspect the comparison response or open its comparison URL. The API also documents endpoints for checking comparison status and retrieving results.
- Review the changed, added, deleted, and unchanged snapshots before deciding whether the visual differences are expected.
The endpoint compares report identifiers; it is not documented as accepting branch names directly. Translate the branches into the report SHAs for the commits you want to inspect rather than passing names such as main or feature/header.
Read the comparison results
| Result category | What to check |
|---|---|
| Changed snapshots | Inspect the visual diff for each existing snapshot. A diff establishes that the captured image changed, not whether the change is a defect. |
| Added snapshots | Check whether the newer report includes snapshots missing from the other report, and whether the inventory change is intentional. |
| Deleted snapshots | Check whether snapshots present in one report are absent from the other, and whether a test or component was removed or stopped being captured. |
| Unchanged snapshots | Use these to distinguish localized changes from broader visual shifts across the report. |
| Summary, status, and comparison URL | Use the response summary and status to understand the comparison, and the URL to review it in Happo. |
Keep the two captures comparable
Before treating a difference as a regression, check the rendering context. Happo’s integration guidance describes browser coverage, configurable viewports, and tolerance settings. Keep the relevant browser and viewport consistent between the reports where possible. Tolerance can reduce incidental rendering noise; it does not determine whether a meaningful UI change is acceptable or remove the need for review. Happo with Playwright · Happo Storybook guidance

- Compare reports for the exact commits you mean to review, not merely two reports with similar branch labels.
- When a large set of snapshots changes, first check whether viewport or browser configuration changed along with the code.
- For a changed snapshot, decide whether the new appearance is intended; for added or deleted snapshots, investigate whether capture coverage changed.
Using Happo in a pull request
In a CI or pull-request workflow, use the Happo check or review link when your integration provides one. The link can take reviewers to the visual comparison alongside the code review. The available workflow depends on the repository integration, so confirm how your configured provider supplies reports and selects baselines.
For GitLab specifically, Happo’s September 10, 2026 announcement describes merge-request checks and baseline lookup by walking commit history, and labels the GitLab integration experimental. That announcement does not establish that other providers use the same baseline behavior. Happo now supports GitLab

If you need to capture a page yourself rather than compare Happo reports, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup options accept consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome reported in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Does a visual diff mean the change is a bug?
No. It shows a difference between snapshots; a reviewer must decide whether that change is intended.
