To find the lowest cost per unit, divide the price you will actually pay by the product’s net quantity, then compare the results using the same unit—such as cents per ounce. A larger package is not automatically cheaper, and a sale or loyalty-card price only counts if you qualify for it.
What does “cost per unit” mean?
Unit price is the cost of a product for a standard amount, such as dollars per pound, cents per ounce, or pence per 100 milliliters. It puts different package sizes on a common basis. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes unit price as cost per unit of measure in its 2025 Unit Pricing Guide.

How do I calculate cost per unit?
- Find the price you will pay. Check whether the shelf price is regular or depends on a sale, digital coupon, or loyalty card.
- Read the net quantity. Use the amount of product in the package, not the package’s outside dimensions.
- Divide price by quantity. USDA MyPlate gives the formula as “TOTAL PRICE ÷ SIZE = UNIT PRICE” in its Shop Smart guidance.
- Put every option on the same basis. Compare cents per ounce with cents per ounce, or dollars per pound with dollars per pound. Since 1 pound equals 16 ounces, convert before comparing those two units.
For an arithmetic illustration, a 12-ounce item priced at $3.00 costs $0.25 per ounce: $3.00 ÷ 12. This is a calculation example, not a current store price.

Compare the same kind of product and measurement
Unit price is most useful when the products are the same or meaningfully comparable. First check that you are comparing the same kind of item, then use a consistent measurement basis. A lower price per ounce for one product does not prove that a different product is interchangeable with it.

For example, Erie County Consumer Protection lists corn flakes at these illustrative prices. They are examples from its Packages page, not current prices:

In this example, the 20-ounce box has the lowest cost per ounce, even though it is not the largest package. Erie County’s bulk example is $1.44 per pound, which converts to 9¢ per ounce by dividing by 16.

Is a bigger package always cheaper?
No. Compare the unit prices instead of assuming that buying more lowers the price per amount. A UK government example makes the point: orange juice is listed at 15.8p per 100 ml for 600 ml, 20p per 100 ml for 1 liter, and 23.3p per 100 ml for 1.5 liters. The smallest package has the lowest unit price in that example. The figures are from UK consumer guidance, not U.S. prices; see GOV.UK’s unit-pricing information.

Check which price and offer apply to you
A displayed unit price is a useful shortcut, but check its basis and the price it uses. A sale, digital coupon, or loyalty-card offer may have conditions, such as requiring a particular card or action. Compare the price you are actually eligible to pay, not an offer that does not apply to you.

NIST’s 2025 guide recommends that unit prices appear near total prices and use consistent units within like product categories; it also recommends showing unit prices on sale signs as well as regular shelf labels. These are best-practice recommendations, not a guarantee that every store label follows them. If a label is missing or unclear, calculate the unit price yourself and ask store staff about a discrepancy.
Use unit price as one part of the decision
The lowest unit price answers a narrow question: which comparable package costs less for a given amount? It does not establish that you will use the entire package, have room to store it, prefer its quality, or find it suitable for your needs. Consider the quantity your household can reasonably use alongside the price comparison.

What price-label rules apply?
Requirements and remedies vary by location. For example, Massachusetts General Laws, chapter 94, section 184C addresses disclosure of card and non-card prices and specified grocery price discrepancies, including a lowest-price requirement in those circumstances. It is a Massachusetts rule, not a nationwide standard; see the Massachusetts statute. Check the rules where you shop if a pricing dispute matters.
