Google Wifi Settings to Change for Better Coverage, Security, and Guest Access

Run a mesh test, reposition weak points, and use Google Home to manage guest access and network security on Google Wifi.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To improve Google Wifi coverage, run a mesh test in the Google Home app and reposition weak points before adding hardware. For safer sharing, enable Guest Wi-Fi with a separate password and choose which devices guests can access. Google Wifi settings are now managed in Google Home; the older Google Wifi app can no longer change network settings.

Which app do you use to change Google Wifi settings?

Use the Google Home app to manage your Google Wifi network. Google says the legacy Google Wifi app can no longer make network changes; it remains useful for checking network information, while reset functionality is still available there. App labels can change, so if a menu differs, update Google Home and check Google’s Google Wifi app guidance.

How do you improve Google Wifi coverage?

Google Wifi operates as a mesh network: its points extend coverage under one network. Start by checking the links between points rather than assuming a room needs another device.

  1. Run a mesh test. In Google Home, select Wi-Fi, then Wifi devices, and run Mesh test. The test is available when the network has multiple mesh devices. Google explains that it measures the connection from the router or primary Wifi point—the one connected to the modem—to additional points. See Google’s mesh test instructions.
  2. Move a weak point closer to a well-connected point. Put it in an open location, preferably where fewer walls, large furniture pieces, or appliances obstruct the path. A higher shelf or a different position in the room may help.
  3. Place points along the route, not at the dead zone. If coverage is poor at the far end of the home, position the next point partway toward that area so it can still maintain a good link. Google’s placement guidance recommends no more than two rooms between points.
  4. Test again. Ratings may shift between “weak” and “good” near the threshold. If results remain inconsistent, move the point closer and retest.

Google’s placement guidance includes further advice on where to put points. If repositioning does not solve a persistent weak area, consider an additional compatible Google Wifi or Nest Wifi point. Google Wifi can mesh with Google Wifi and Nest Wifi, but Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined with those Wi-Fi 5 devices. Google’s support pages describe point-count guidance in different ways—the system is described as designed for up to five routers and points total, and one product page says more than five is not recommended—so check the guidance for your device generation before expanding the network. See Google’s Google Wifi overview.

Google Nest Wifi - AC2200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 2200 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack
  • Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]

A third-party extender is not equivalent to adding a mesh point. Google Wifi is designed to mesh with compatible Google or Nest Wifi devices, not to act as a repeater for an unrelated existing router. Google also warns that third-party bridges and extenders may affect device lists, guest-device sharing, quality-of-service features, or WPA3 interoperability; consult Google’s compatibility guidance before adding one.

Can Google Wifi settings improve speed for a particular activity?

Google Home offers preferred-activity and priority-device controls to manage how available bandwidth is shared. These settings do not increase the capacity of your internet plan.

Google Nest WiFi Pro - 6E - Reliable Home Wi-Fi System with Fast Speed and Whole Home Coverage - Mesh Router - 3 Pack - Snow
  • Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
  • Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
  • Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
  • Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
  • It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]

Google lists video conferencing as a supported preferred activity, including Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, GoTo Meeting, and Webex Meetings. Google says that when a priority device is also set alongside a preferred activity, 70% of bandwidth is reserved for that device. That is Google’s description of the setting, not a general speed guarantee. If your internet connection has limited capacity, prioritizing one device can leave less bandwidth for other devices and activities. Details are in Google’s preferred-activity and priority-device guide.

How do you set up a guest network on Google Wifi?

Guest Wi-Fi gives visitors a separate network name and password. You can also choose which devices on your main network guests may use.

Google Wifi - AC1200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 1500 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack
  • Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
  • Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
  • Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
  • Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
  • Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want
  1. Open Google Home and tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap Devices, then Network settings.
  3. Choose Guest Network and turn it on.
  4. Enter a guest network name and password, select the devices you want to share, then save.

Google requires a guest password and recommends using a name and password different from the main network. You can later edit the guest name, password, and shared-device list. To share the password, use the Home app or, where available, a Nest display or voice assistant. Voice password checking is unavailable in Finland, Portugal, Hong Kong, and the Philippines according to Google’s support page; the app also provides a setting to hide the guest password from assistant-enabled displays. See Google’s guest-network instructions.

How do you review network access and protect your privacy?

Notice new devices and remove unwanted access

Turn on new-device notifications in Google Home if you want an alert when a device joins the network. If you find an unfamiliar device, pausing its internet access does not necessarily prevent it from reaching other devices on the local network. Changing the Wi-Fi password prevents it from continuing to join, but all your other devices will also disconnect until they are updated with the new password. Google explains these controls in its device and network access guidance.

Understand what Google says it collects

Google’s privacy disclosure, last modified September 24, 2024, says Wifi does not track the websites you visit or collect the content of network traffic. Google says it does collect operational information such as Wi-Fi channel, signal strength, and device types, and describes controls for cloud services and Wifi-point statistics in the Home app. These are Google’s stated practices and controls, not an independent audit. Read Google’s Wifi privacy disclosure.

Do not assume there is an encryption-mode switch

Google’s reviewed user guidance establishes controls for passwords, guest access, device notifications, and privacy, but does not establish a current Google Wifi setting for choosing WPA2 or WPA3. Do not rely on instructions that promise an encryption-mode toggle unless Google documents it for your specific hardware and app version. Google also notes that third-party networking equipment can create compatibility issues, including with WPA3.
