Screenshots show visual differences; separate, repeatable benchmark runs are needed to measure performance cost. A “High” preset in one game is not directly equivalent to “High” in another.
Set up a comparison that isolates the setting
- Choose a repeatable scene. Prefer a built-in benchmark, replay, photo mode, or fixed save and location. Keep the camera position and view consistent. Dissimilar scenes cannot isolate a graphics option reliably.
- Lock the conditions. Record the game build or patch, output resolution, display mode, render scale or upscaler, field of view, camera position, and capture route. Keep them unchanged between the before and after images.
- Change one option at a time. Save a baseline screenshot, change the setting, then capture the same view again. If the game requires a restart for the change to take effect, restart before the second capture. NVIDIA’s Control graphics guide notes that its Texture Resolution test required a full restart.
- Use original, lossless captures where possible. Avoid resizing or selectively post-processing either image. If you make a crop or side-by-side panel, use identical scale and crop boundaries, and keep the original files.
- Label the evidence. Include the game, build, option name and values, output resolution, scaling and anti-aliasing mode, and capture tool. When comparing different games, describe what is visible rather than treating similarly named presets as equivalent.
Official examples illustrate why the scene should match the setting. NVIDIA’s Control guide compares options such as reflections, shadows, texture resolution, and ray-traced effects. Its Shadow of the Tomb Raider guide uses setting-specific comparisons, including an ambient-occlusion example showing contact-shadow differences.

Inspect the image for the effects that setting can change
Look at the relevant parts of the scene, not just the overall impression. Depending on the option, inspect fine texture detail, distant geometry and level of detail, shadow edges and contact shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, or volumetric effects. For anti-aliasing and upscaling, look for shimmer, edge stability, and detail retention.
A still image cannot fully show temporal behavior. If ghosting, shimmering in motion, or motion clarity is important, use a short matched video as additional evidence or state that the screenshot comparison does not settle that question. Compare a reflection or shadow setting only in a scene where the effect is actually visible.
Do not treat presets as a cross-game scale
The available official examples are game-specific; they do not establish a shared cross-game graphics-setting standard. “High” in one game does not prove the same rendering quality as “High” in another. Give each game’s exact menu label and value, scene, output resolution, and capture method. Compare observed image traits rather than ranking preset names as though they were standardized.
For performance comparisons between games, use the same hardware and output resolution where possible. If those conditions differ, identify the mismatch explicitly; otherwise readers cannot tell whether a result reflects the game, the settings, or the test system.

Measure performance separately from appearance
A screenshot documents appearance, not the cost of rendering it. Pair the image comparison with benchmark results from a repeatable run or sequence. State the game build, GPU and driver, resolution, graphics API if known, and relevant graphics options. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.7 User Guide describes benchmark summaries that include output resolution and graphics API.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Average FPS is the average frames per second.
- 1% low FPS is the average of the slowest one percent of frames. FrameView 1.7 explains that a 1% low closer to average FPS is likely to indicate a more consistent experience.
- V-Sync condition matters: FrameView 1.7 warns that V-Sync caps displayed frame rate at monitor refresh, so it does not show the hardware’s full performance potential. Disabling it can permit tearing. This is a measurement choice, not a recommendation to disable V-Sync while playing. Keep the condition the same across compared runs and report it.
Game-specific benchmark screens can make conditions easier to audit. CD PROJEKT RED’s Patch 1.62 announcement for Cyberpunk 2077 says its benchmark results screen was updated to show PC specifications, GPU driver version, and selected settings. That is a patch-specific example, not a general feature shared by all games.

Check the capture path when upscaling is enabled
A saved screenshot may not show the final image that reaches the display. NVIDIA’s November 2021 article on Image Scaling says software capture methods may record the lower pre-upscaled resolution rather than the target native resolution because Image Scaling is performed by the GPU. NVIDIA says GeForce Experience Alt+F1 screenshots are supported and names an Elgato 4K60 PRO MK.2 capture card as an interim option in that specific context. This guidance is about NVIDIA Image Scaling as documented in 2021; it should not be generalized to every upscaler, GPU, or current capture application. Verify the current capture behavior for your setup before relying on it.
The same 2021 article describes NVIDIA Image Scaling as spatial and non-temporal and contrasts it with DLSS’s use of temporal information. Those are NVIDIA’s descriptions of the technologies discussed in that article, not a neutral universal ranking of all upscalers.

Optional: capture a reference page with ScreenshotNeo
For a web-based settings guide, benchmark page, or other reference you want to document, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL as an image or PDF. It is not a replacement for in-game screenshots: use the repeatable scene and capture route above for the game images themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can one screenshot prove which setting looks better in motion?
No. Use a matched short video as well when motion behavior such as ghosting or shimmer is central to the comparison.
Do similarly named graphics presets mean the same thing between games?
No. Report each game’s exact option label and value, then compare the visible result under documented conditions.
