Neither is a universal winner: the better fit depends on your deployment format, Git provider, team-access needs, and whether you want to operate the platform’s control plane yourself.
What these platforms do—and what they do not do
Both products act as deployment control planes: they help you configure and manage workloads, but a self-hosted installation does not supply the servers those workloads run on. Coolify describes its platform as a way to deploy and manage applications, databases, and services on servers you control. Its server model connects to those machines over SSH to manage Docker resources. Coolify: What is Coolify · Coolify: Servers overview

That distinction matters when comparing operating effort. You are choosing both a deployment interface and a control-plane operating model—not buying a complete managed application-hosting service by default.
Compare the deployment workflow you actually use
Start with one representative project. Identify whether you deploy from a Git repository, build from a Dockerfile, run a prebuilt image, or define an application as a Docker Compose stack. Coolify’s overview lists these kinds of resources, while Dokploy’s official feature comparison documents Compose support for both products. Check the current documentation for the exact behavior and constraints of your chosen release before moving a production workload. Coolify: What is Coolify · Dokploy: Comparison

The comparison table from Dokploy also shows broad overlap across areas such as API or CLI access, multi-node support, monitoring, backups, notifications, environments, rollbacks, and preview deployments. A feature appearing in a matrix does not tell you whether its details suit your workflow; test the configuration you need, including how it behaves when a deployment fails or needs to be rolled back.
Check whether your Git provider is listed
In Dokploy’s published comparison table, Dokploy lists Bitbucket, GitLab, and Gitea integrations that the table does not list for Coolify. Treat that as a snapshot of the vendor’s comparison, not proof that support can never change or that no alternative integration path exists. If a provider is important to your team, verify its current support and test authentication, webhook delivery, and deployment triggers in the version you plan to use. Dokploy: Comparison

Self-host the platform
With a self-hosted control plane, you operate the platform instance as well as providing infrastructure for applications. Coolify documents a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of free disk for the Coolify instance; that is the platform’s stated minimum, not a capacity estimate for your applications. Workloads need additional resources. Coolify: Start with Self-hosted

Dokploy’s editions page describes a free self-hosted OSS edition. Edition details can change, so check the current page for what is included before you commit. Dokploy: Cloud vs Self-Hosted
Use a cloud control plane
Dokploy also documents cloud and enterprise options. A cloud option changes who operates the platform’s control plane; it does not mean you can ignore the servers that host your workloads. Compare the current edition boundaries and responsibilities on the official page rather than assuming every feature is available on every plan. Dokploy: Cloud vs Self-Hosted
Account for team access and governance
For a solo developer, basic access controls may be enough. For an organization, check the specific role and governance features your team requires. Dokploy’s editions page distinguishes basic roles from capabilities such as custom roles, single sign-on (SSO), SCIM, and audit logs, with availability tied to its paid or enterprise offerings. Confirm current plan boundaries and terms before choosing; the comparison does not establish equivalent plan-by-plan capabilities for Coolify. Dokploy: Cloud vs Self-Hosted

Include security, maintenance, and recovery in the decision
A deployment dashboard with access to servers and credentials is a sensitive administrative system. Coolify describes itself as a privileged control plane that stores credentials and connects to servers over SSH to manage Docker resources. Its security guidance places responsibility for protecting access and credentials, securing servers and workloads, and recovering applications and data on the administrator. Coolify: Security model
- Protect the control-plane account and any stored credentials; restrict who can reach administrative interfaces.
- Keep the host operating system, Docker, application code, and container images maintained, and configure SSH and firewall controls appropriately.
- Plan backups for both the platform configuration and application data. A backup is only useful if you can restore it, so test recovery before relying on it for important workloads.
Coolify’s self-hosting guidance also warns that the first person to reach an unclaimed registration page may become the administrator, and recommends keeping installation secrets backed up. Secure initial access promptly and follow the current setup guidance for your installation. Coolify: Start with Self-hosted
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not choose based on an assumed scaling winner
Coolify’s documentation labels its Docker Swarm integration experimental and deprecated, advises against new Swarm deployments in v4, and says it is planned for removal in v5. Because that guidance is release-sensitive, check the documentation for the version you intend to run. It is a reason not to select Coolify on the assumption that Swarm is its recommended forward path. Coolify: Docker Swarm (Deprecated)

The available official materials do not establish a complete, independently verified head-to-head comparison of scaling capacity, performance, reliability, or ease of use. Treat feature lists as starting points for evaluation, not benchmark results.
A practical way to make the choice
- Match your deployment format. Build a trial with the same Git, Dockerfile, image, or Compose pattern your real project uses, and confirm the current release supports the details you need.
- Verify integrations. Check that your Git provider and any required deployment triggers work with your intended setup.
- Choose the operating model. Decide whether your team wants to patch, secure, back up, and recover a self-hosted control plane or use a documented cloud option where available.
- Check governance needs. Map required roles, SSO, SCIM, or audit logging to the current edition and plan rather than assuming feature parity.
- Test the full lifecycle. Deploy a representative app and database, then exercise a failed deployment, rollback, backup, and restore before entrusting important workloads to the platform.
Which one fits?
Choose based on the integration and deployment model that works for your projects, not on a blanket claim that one platform is better. Dokploy is a natural candidate to evaluate if its listed Git-provider integrations or documented team and cloud-edition options match your requirements. Coolify is worth evaluating if its documented resource workflow fits your applications and you are comfortable operating its control plane and the servers it manages. For either self-hosted option, budget time for security, updates, backups, and recovery alongside deployment setup.
