To compare Google Maps and Apple Maps for trip research, run the same destination and shortlist workflow in both: find candidate places, inspect what each app shows, save the same locations, add notes, and try sharing your collection. Apple Maps documents curated and custom Guides and Look Around; Google Maps documents saved lists, notes, and list collaboration. Which works better depends on your destination, device, and whether you need to share planning details.
What to compare when researching a destination
Place research is more than finding a route. You may want to discover options, understand their surroundings, remember why they made the shortlist, and coordinate with someone else. Compare those tasks separately rather than treating either app as a universal winner.

The available documentation establishes specific planning and organization features, not which service has more accurate listings, better ratings, more reliable opening hours, or superior route guidance. Those questions require a destination-specific check.
How do I save places I want to visit?
Google Maps: lists, notes, and collaboration
Google Maps lets you save places in lists, add notes to places, and share lists or invite collaborators. Google’s current Help documentation says a saved list is limited to 3,000 entries and warns that larger lists may not display properly. See Google Maps Help on creating and managing lists for the documented workflow and limits.
#1 Best Overall
This setup suits a shortlist where you want to keep places together and make planning context available to other people. If you are using an iPhone or iPad, Google also documents notes and list collaboration in its mobile workflow; check the linked Help instructions for the current controls on your device.
Apple Maps: saved places, personal notes, and Guides
Apple Maps supports saving places and attaching personal notes. Apple says a note is visible only to you. When you share that place, the note can accompany the link as text, but it does not become a note in the recipient’s own saved place. Apple describes this behavior in its iPhone Maps documentation for saved places.
Rank #2
Apple also lets you create custom Guides to collect places, alongside curated Guides. Its product page describes about a thousand curated Guides; that is Apple’s own product description, not an independently audited count. See Apple Maps for its overview of Guides and place-discovery features.

It depends on how the list will be used. Google’s documented list sharing and collaboration are a practical fit when a companion needs to work with the collection. Apple’s custom Guides provide another way to group saved places, while personal notes remain yours; sharing a place does not transfer your note into another person’s saved record.

Before committing a whole trip to one workflow, test the exact handoff you need. Sharing a single place is not the same as sharing a collection, and a private reminder is not the same as a note collaborators can use.
How to compare discovery and place previews
Apple highlights curated Guides and Look Around, which lets you inspect a place and its surroundings visually. Availability varies by geography, so check the actual destination rather than assuming the feature covers every city or address. Apple describes these features on its Maps product page.
Rank #4
The Google sources covered here focus on saving and organizing places; they do not establish an equivalent visual-preview comparison. That is not evidence that Google lacks relevant imagery or other discovery tools. Open both apps for the same destination and compare the information and imagery each actually provides there.

A fair, repeatable comparison
- Choose a real destination. Use the city, neighborhood, or trip you are planning; local coverage can affect what you can see and use.
- Search for the same kinds of places. Try a few categories you care about, such as a meal, a landmark, or a useful stop. Compare the candidate results without assuming that one provider’s coverage is universally better.
- Open each candidate. Check the details, photos, and any visual preview available in that location. Note whether the information answers your planning question.
- Save the same places in each app. Create a shortlist, then add a short note explaining why each place made it. This reveals whether the organization model fits the way you remember options.
- Try the intended sharing workflow. Share the collection or place with the person who will plan with you. Confirm what they can see and whether your notes arrive in a usable form.
- Review settings on the devices and accounts you use. Check location and history controls in both the app and relevant account or device settings.
What the privacy controls mean
Apple Maps
Apple says, “You do not have to sign in to your Apple Account to use Maps.” It also says selected synced information is end-to-end encrypted when you are signed in with two-factor authentication. These statements describe particular service and data conditions, not a promise that every Maps feature works without location access or that every kind of information is handled identically. Apple notes that location is needed for many features and describes processing location data in less precise form. See Apple’s Maps privacy documentation.
Best Value
Google Maps
Google says, “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” If enabled, precise device location is regularly saved to Timeline. Google also notes that other settings may still save searches, interactions, or photos associated with places, so Timeline controls do not describe every Maps-related data setting. See Google Maps Help on Timeline.
These controls are not interchangeable measures of overall privacy. Compare the specific settings you intend to use and the information each setting covers instead of reducing the choice to a blanket label.
