Compare the activities you can actually attend, the full cost, travel and venue logistics, equipment needs, accessibility, and community fit—not just whether an event calls itself a convention or a local meetup. A convention can offer a broad schedule and game library; a local event may be closer or more focused. Some conventions also support gaming meetups throughout the year, so the formats can complement each other.
Compare the experience, not the event label
Start with what you want to do: try unfamiliar games, play casually, enter tournaments, bring your own computer, browse exhibits, or meet a recurring local group. Then check the organizer’s current schedule and attendee guide to see whether those activities are available, when they happen, and whether you need to register.

For example, the Origins Game Fair 2026 attendee guide describes open gaming, a game library, scheduled events, tournaments, workshops, and an exhibit hall. The LUG Con attendee page lists board games, miniatures, role-playing games, and trading-card games, with programming from casual learn-to-play sessions to competitive tournaments. By contrast, the Akron LANFest 2026 guide describes a BYOC LAN organized around reserved seats and attendees’ own gaming equipment. These are examples of particular events, not universal definitions of each format.

| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Format and scale | Is it a multi-day convention, a store or community meetup, a tournament, or a BYOC LAN? Find out whether activities are spread across rooms or focused in one space. |
| Games and programming | Look for the genres and activities you care about: casual play, learn-to-play, tournaments, demos, exhibits, or workshops. Check whether you need to reserve a place. |
| Total cost | Add admission, separately priced activities, transport, lodging, meals, equipment rental, and any optional purchases. Compare the checkout total, not just the advertised badge or seat price. |
| Schedule and capacity | Check activity times and locations, player counts, registration rules, and seat availability. A listed event may have limited seating or require advance sign-up. |
| Travel and venue | Estimate the door-to-door journey. Check transit or parking, venue layout, food options, and nearby lodging if you need it. |
| Equipment | Confirm what the organizer provides and what you must bring. A BYOC event can require a computer or console, monitor, network cable, peripherals, and power strip; other formats may not. |
| Accessibility and comfort | Look for access information, quiet spaces, crowd and noise guidance, and options for breaks or assistance. Do not assume one venue’s facilities or policies apply to another. |
| Community fit | Consider whether the event welcomes newcomers, offers youth-friendly activities, or connects to recurring local play. A convention badge may sometimes support community events beyond the convention itself. |
Three 2026 examples show why details matter
| Event | What its organizer describes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Origins Game Fair (2026 attendee guide) | Multiple floors and rooms, open gaming, a game library, scheduled sessions, tournaments, workshops, and an exhibit hall. Some scheduled events require an additional fee. | Origins says schedule listings include time, location, player count, and description; some events have limited seating or require advance registration. Check the current guide for access and venue details. |
| Game Con Junction (scheduled November 6–8, 2026) | A Louisville tabletop convention listing RPGs, board games, card tournaments, demos, vendors, and youth-friendly programming. Its page says badge proceeds help support community gaming events throughout the year. | The early-bird period shown on the page ended October 5, 2026. Do not treat those rates as currently available; check current ticket terms and the schedule. The organizer’s 800+ attendee figure is a projection, not a final attendance result. |
| LUG Con (October 1–4, 2026 dates listed) | A tabletop convention at the Gas South Convention Center in Duluth, Georgia, with scheduled play, a game library, exhibits, and travel information. Those listed 2026 dates had passed by October 7, 2026. | Check the official attendee page for future dates and current arrangements. Its reported 2025 figures—1,400+ attendees, 75+ vendors and sponsors, and 250+ events—are organizer-reported retrospective figures, not a comparison with local events. |
| Akron LANFest (October 10–11, 2026 guide) | A BYOC LAN with limited reserved seats, equipment expectations, and venue rules. | Check whether seats remain and read the current equipment and venue requirements before travel. Its BYOC instructions describe this event, not every local gaming event. |
Event dates, prices, ticket terms, schedules, and venue arrangements can change. Use each organizer’s current page before buying a ticket or making travel plans. The cited organizers publish event-specific information, not a reliable, comparable measure of whether conventions or local events offer better attendee outcomes.

Calculate the real cost before choosing
Build a simple estimate for each option. Include every cost that applies to your plans, and separate required expenses from optional spending:
- Admission: badge, ticket, or reserved seat, plus service charges shown at checkout.
- Activities: separately priced tournaments, sessions, or other programming.
- Travel: fuel, transit, parking, or other transport.
- Stay and meals: lodging and food, especially for a multi-day or destination event.
- Equipment: rental or any hardware and accessories you need to bring or obtain.
- Optional purchases: games, merchandise, or other purchases you choose to make.
For instance, Origins notes that some scheduled events have an extra fee, while Akron LANFest lists a BYOC seat and optional add-ons. Game Con Junction lists badge tiers, but the early-bird period on its page ended October 5, 2026. Confirm what is currently for sale and what each price includes rather than relying on an expired offer or a headline price.

Check the schedule, venue, and personal requirements
Make sure the activities fit your time
Read the schedule for start times, locations, player counts, and registration requirements. If a session is central to your visit, confirm that it has space before committing to travel. At a large convention, allow time to get between rooms or floors; Origins’ guide describes gaming across multiple levels and rooms.
Confirm what the venue expects you to bring
For a BYOC LAN, use the event’s equipment list as a packing checklist. Akron LANFest’s guide asks attendees to bring a computer or console, monitor, network cable, peripherals, and power strip, subject to its rules. Do not assume a convention or local store meetup has the same requirements—or provides equipment—without checking its own guidance.

Assess access and sensory comfort
Look for venue-specific information on accessible facilities, quiet areas, noise, and crowding. Origins says its halls can be loud, crowded, and visually busy, and lists accessible facilities and two quiet spaces. It also suggests comfort items such as noise-canceling headphones as an optional way to manage sensory input. Treat that as guidance for its venue, not a guarantee about another event.
