Capture an approved full-page screenshot before the CMS change, capture the same page afterward in the same rendering environment, then compare the images and review every difference against the intended edit. A pixel difference tells you what changed visually; it does not tell you whether the change is correct.
Set up a comparison that means something
Choose a representative page and save a known-good full-page screenshot before publishing the CMS update. Treat it as the baseline: later captures are compared with this approved reference. Playwright’s visual-comparison workflow likewise creates reference screenshots on an initial run and compares later runs against them (Playwright screenshot comparisons).

Record enough detail to recreate the capture. At minimum, note the URL, browser and version, operating system or platform, viewport width and height, and relevant page state. Include details such as whether a user is logged in, which content variant is shown, and whether the consent banner has been dismissed. Use the same values for the post-update capture.

- Capture the same URL and page state on both runs.
- Wait until the page has settled, including any fonts, images, and content that load after the initial page render.
- Save the original baseline and identify it with the page and environment it represents.
Consistency matters because rendering can vary by host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends using the environment that generated the baseline for meaningful comparisons (Playwright documentation).
Capture the updated page and compare it
- Publish or apply the CMS content change in the environment you intend to check.
- Capture the same URL as a full-page screenshot, using the baseline’s browser, viewport, page state, and other relevant settings.
- Generate a difference view with your chosen tool. For a local Playwright workflow, compare against the stored reference screenshot; for a hosted workflow, inspect the new snapshot against the project baseline.
- Review the full-page difference image, then zoom in on affected regions. Check that differences correspond to the planned edit rather than an unintended shift or rendering failure.
- Approve and replace the baseline only after review. Keep the newly approved reference tied to its URL, page state, and rendering environment.
Full-page capture matters for CMS changes because an edit near the top can affect text wrapping, section spacing, or content farther down. BrowserStack’s Percy guidance recommends verifying the entire page to obtain broad visual coverage (Percy recommended guidelines).

Interpret differences against the intended edit
Review each changed area with the planned content update in mind. Expected differences might include the revised headline, new paragraph, or replacement image. Also check nearby and downstream layout: text wrapping, image dimensions and crop, spacing, navigation, calls to action, and lower-page sections.
- Expected content change: The new copy or asset appears, and surrounding elements still align and remain readable.
- Possible layout regression: Text overlaps, a column shifts unexpectedly, a button moves or disappears, or spacing changes outside the edited area.
- Possible capture noise: A timestamp, rotating promotion, personalized element, or asynchronous widget changes even though the page layout is healthy.
- Possible functional or publishing issue: The screenshot shows missing, stale, or unexpected content. Verify the CMS publishing state and check links and interactions separately.
A visual comparison cannot establish whether copy is factually correct, whether a link works, or whether an interaction behaves properly. If those are in scope, check the text, links, publishing state, and interactions separately; Percy also describes visual testing as part of a broader verification process (Percy guidelines).
Reduce noise without hiding real defects
First make the page as deterministic as practical: use a stable test account and content state, wait for loading to finish, and keep the capture environment fixed. If a genuinely volatile region cannot be stabilized, filter only that region during capture. Playwright documents capture-time styles for filtering dynamic content, along with comparison controls such as maxDiffPixels and a per-pixel threshold (Playwright visual comparisons).

- FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
- ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
Use filters and thresholds narrowly. A large tolerance can hide a real text-wrap change, a misplaced component, or another regression. Stabilize or filter the specific nondeterministic region, then review the remaining differences against the CMS edit. Neither Playwright nor Percy can infer editorial intent from an image comparison; human review remains necessary.
Choose local Playwright or hosted Percy review
These workflows solve the same baseline-and-review problem in different ways. Choose based on how your team wants to store snapshots, review changes, and cover browsers and viewport sizes.
| Workflow | Baseline and capture | Review and change gate | Environment coverage and fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Playwright screenshot assertions | Reference snapshots live with the test suite; Playwright provides a snapshot update command for replacing references. | A screenshot difference fails the local assertion. The team reviews test output and snapshot changes. | The team maintains browser and platform consistency. A good fit when the project already uses Playwright and manages snapshots in source control. |
| Hosted Percy review workflow | Build snapshots against a baseline and inspect differences in the Percy project. | Reviewers can approve or request changes; a pipeline wait or fail step can be configured if unapproved changes should block. | BrowserStack documents browser and responsive-width coverage, with Automate for broader device and browser combinations. A fit when hosted review or broader documented coverage is useful; integration and account setup are required. |

ScreenshotNeo can capture the updated page through one API request, returning an image you can compare with your baseline. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots. Free includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Example cURL request (replace the example URL with the page you need to compare):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. This captures a screenshot; you still need to compare it with your approved baseline and review differences. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo to get 1,000 screenshots a month free, with no card required.

The whole page looks different
Check that both images use the same browser, platform, viewport, page state, and browser settings. Confirm that the page finished loading and that the baseline belongs to the same URL and environment. Differences across rendering environments can be real even when the page code has not changed.

Only a few regions change on every run
Look for dynamic content such as rotating promotions, timestamps, personalized content, or widgets that load asynchronously. Stabilize the test data or wait for the relevant state. If that is not feasible, apply a capture-time filter only to the known volatile region and inspect the rest.
The comparison reports too many differences
Do not immediately raise the threshold. First compare the capture settings and page state, then inspect whether a font, image, or late-loading element was captured at different stages. If using a threshold or pixel limit, set it narrowly and verify that it does not conceal the specific layout changes you need to detect.
The page looks correct but the test fails
Inspect the reported difference image at full-page scale and zoom into changed regions. Determine whether the change is an intended CMS edit, environmental rendering variation, or regression before updating the reference. Updating a baseline without review can turn an unintended change into the new expected result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot comparison prove the CMS update is correct?
No. It shows visual differences against a reference. Review the changes and separately test content accuracy, links, publishing state, and interactions when those matter.
Should every changed pixel fail the comparison?
Not necessarily. Use narrowly scoped filters or thresholds for genuine rendering noise, but review the affected regions so real content and layout defects are not hidden.
