Schedule the script with cron on a machine you maintain, or use a scheduled GitHub Actions workflow. The key to useful alerts is consistency: render with the same browser, operating system, viewport, and page setup, then inspect changed images instead of silently replacing the baseline.
Choose between recording screenshots and detecting visual changes
A scheduled screenshot gives you a visual record; it does not by itself decide whether a page changed. Choose the approach that matches your goal:

- Keep a history: take a screenshot on each run and save it under a unique, timestamped filename. Review the images when needed.
- Detect changes automatically: use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion,
toHaveScreenshot(), with a retained reference image. Playwright creates the reference on the first run and compares later runs against it. Review and deliberately update the reference when a change is expected.
Do not automatically accept every changed image as a new reference: doing so removes the comparison signal. Playwright documents both screenshot capture and visual comparisons in its Screenshots guide and Visual comparisons guide.
Capture a timestamped screenshot with Playwright
The following Node.js example visits a URL, waits for a meaningful page condition, and saves a full-page PNG with a UTC timestamp. Set the URL and readiness selector for the page you are monitoring. Use a stable viewport so changes in window size do not masquerade as site changes.

- Install Playwright: in a project directory, run

}domcontentloaded plus a visible page element is a deliberate readiness condition, not a guarantee that every late-loading widget or image has finished. Choose a selector that appears when the content you care about is ready. If the page updates asynchronously, wait for a specific state or response rather than adding a long, arbitrary sleep. For an element-only image, locate the element and call its screenshot() method instead of taking a full-page capture. Playwright can also return screenshot bytes for processing rather than writing directly to a file; see the official capture options.
The timestamp prevents a successful run from overwriting yesterday’s evidence. Include a short site identifier in filenames when one script monitors several URLs, and avoid putting credentials or sensitive query parameters in filenames or logs.
Compare runs for visual changes
For regression-style monitoring, put the navigation and readiness checks in a Playwright Test test and use await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The first run creates a reference image; later runs compare against it. Keep the reference under version control or another durable store, and review diffs before updating it. Consult the official visual comparison documentation for assertion configuration and snapshot behavior.

Playwright notes that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Run the initial reference capture and future comparisons in the same environment wherever practical: keep the operating system, browser build, fonts, viewport, and page setup consistent. Playwright discusses CI and containers as ways to make screenshot environments more consistent in its Continuous Integration guide.

Schedule captures with local cron
Local cron is suitable when you control a machine that is reliably available at the required times. A crontab entry has five time/date fields—minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week—and cron checks entries at minute granularity. Local-time schedules have daylight-saving edge cases: a time that does not exist during a clock change is skipped, while a duplicated time can run twice. See the Linux crontab manual.
- Find stable paths: use absolute paths for the project, Node executable, output directory, and log. Cron does not necessarily inherit your interactive shell’s PATH or working directory.
- Test the exact command: run it from the project directory and verify it succeeds without relying on shell startup files.
- Edit your user crontab: run
crontab -eand add an entry such as the following for daily execution at 03:15 in the host’s local time. - Check outputs and logs: confirm new files appear and investigate any nonzero exit or error output.

If the project uses an npm script, call the correct executable and script explicitly—for example, the absolute path to npm followed by run capture. Schedule with GitHub Actions instead
A hosted workflow avoids maintaining a continuously available personal machine, but it runs on GitHub’s schedule and runner environment. GitHub Actions scheduled workflows use five-field POSIX cron syntax, run from the default branch’s latest commit, use UTC unless an IANA time zone is specified, and have a documented minimum interval of five minutes. Check GitHub’s workflow syntax documentation for current scheduling details.
This illustrative workflow runs Playwright Test daily at 03:15 UTC and can also be started manually. Add an artifact-upload or other durable-storage step if you need to retain screenshots or reports; without one, do not assume files produced on a hosted runner will be kept for later inspection. Configure failure notifications separately if operators need alerts.

Keep action versions aligned with your team’s maintenance policy, commit the workflow on the repository’s default branch, and validate it with a manual run. For visual comparisons, make sure the workflow uses the same browser and environment as the reference capture.
Make the monitor useful when a run fails
A screenshot is evidence, not an alerting system. Retain enough information to distinguish a real page change from a failed visit or a rendering difference.
- Keep run evidence: save timestamped screenshots or visual diffs, test output, and logs in a location that survives the run.
- Record what was checked: associate each output with the monitored URL and the run time. If you monitor several pages, use stable identifiers.
- Handle failures explicitly: make the scheduler or workflow expose a failed process exit, then configure notifications separately if someone must respond.
- Review before resetting: compare a changed image with the prior screenshot and update a baseline only when the change is intentional.
Troubleshooting common problems
The scheduled command works manually but not under cron
Cron may use a different working directory, PATH, environment, or user account. Use absolute paths, set the project directory in the command, and redirect both standard output and errors to a log. Check that the cron user can read the project and write to the screenshot directory.

The screenshot is blank or missing page content
The page may not have reached the state your capture requires. Wait for a meaningful visible element or a known response, and confirm the selector matches the page. Check logs for navigation timeouts, authentication requirements, or blocked access. Avoid treating a timeout as a valid screenshot.

Visual diffs appear even though the site did not meaningfully change
Compare the browser build, operating system, fonts, viewport, headless mode, and page setup between runs. Dynamic timestamps, rotating content, animations, and personalized content can also change pixels; stabilize or exclude those elements only when doing so matches the monitoring goal. Do not accept every diff automatically.
GitHub Actions does not run at the expected local time
By default, the schedule is interpreted in UTC, not the workstation’s local zone. Convert the intended time to UTC or use a supported IANA time zone in the workflow schedule. Also verify that the workflow file is on the default branch and that the requested frequency meets GitHub’s documented minimum interval.
Runs are skipped or duplicated around a clock change
This can occur with local-time cron schedules during daylight-saving transitions. Choose a schedule and time zone appropriate to your monitoring need, and account for the host’s local-time behavior described in the crontab manual.

Does a screenshot monitor notify me when a page changes?
Not on its own. Configure the scheduler or workflow to surface failures and add a notification mechanism if a person needs to be alerted.
Can I monitor just one part of a page?
Yes. Use a Playwright locator and capture that element, or use a screenshot assertion for the element you want to compare.
