What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To find exact duplicates with different names, use a duplicate finder’s content- or hash-based comparison—not a name-only search. Matching file sizes can help the tool narrow candidates, but size alone does not prove that two files contain the same data. Before deleting anything, inspect each match group and confirm that the copy you plan to remove is in a location you can safely clean up.
Why names and file sizes are not enough
A filename is a label, not a description of the file’s contents. Two files with unrelated names can be identical, while files with the same name can contain different data. A name-only search can therefore miss duplicates or group together files that are not duplicates.

File size is useful as an initial filter: files of different sizes cannot be exact copies of one another. But equal sizes do not establish that their contents match. A content-based duplicate finder compares data rather than relying on labels or size alone. Czkawka documents Hash and Name as separate check methods, and says its Hash method does not use filenames as the comparison criterion. See the Czkawka project FAQ.

How content-based comparison works
A hash is a compact value calculated from file data. A duplicate finder can use it to identify files whose contents produce the same hash, even if their names or folder locations differ. The details matter, though: tools use different workflows and algorithms, so “compares by hash” does not mean every application performs the same checks.

Czkawka’s documented workflow
The Czkawka project FAQ describes a pipeline that filters by file size, then uses a prehash and a full hash. It says the default full-hash algorithm is BLAKE3, with CRC32 and XXH3 available as alternatives. The FAQ also states: “Czkawka uses hashes only (size + prehash + full hash pipeline) – no byte-by-byte comparison.” In other words, its documented workflow does not follow matching hashes with a separate comparison of every byte.
dupeGuru’s documented workflow
The dupeGuru scanning documentation for version 4.0.3 describes content comparisons using MD5 hashes. That page establishes the behavior described for that version’s documentation, not a universal rule for every duplicate finder or every later release. See dupeGuru’s scanning documentation.

These examples illustrate why it is worth checking the documentation for the particular tool and version you use. Look for the hash algorithm, whether it can be changed, and whether the program performs a byte-by-byte check after hashing. Do not assume that one tool’s method applies to another.
A careful workflow before removing duplicates
- Choose the folders to scan. Include only locations you intend to review. Select a duplicate mode that compares file contents or hashes rather than names alone.
- Check how the tool matches files. Confirm whether it uses size as a filter, which hash algorithm it uses, and whether it verifies matching hashes with a byte-by-byte comparison. Treat size as a way to narrow candidates, not as proof of a match.
- Inspect each reported group. Check that the files are presented as matches to a reference copy. Open files or compare relevant details when you are unsure; do not assume the software can decide which copy is useful to you.
- Check the file locations and intended use. A matching file may be stored in a folder managed by an application or the operating system, or it may serve a different purpose because of where it is kept. The fact that two files match does not establish which one should be kept.
- Use a reversible removal option when available. dupeGuru’s documentation describes marking files and sending them to the Recycle Bin, and recommends reviewing matches before deletion. Its results are shown in groups with a reference file and duplicate entries. See the dupeGuru results documentation and dupeGuru Quick Start.
- Recheck before making removal permanent. Review the files in the Recycle Bin or other recovery location before emptying it. For valuable data, maintain an independent backup as a general precaution.
What a duplicate report can—and cannot—tell you
A content match answers whether files are considered duplicates under that tool’s comparison method. It does not answer which copy belongs in a particular folder, whether an application relies on one path, or which version you intended to retain. Make that decision using the file’s location and role, not just the order in which copies appear in a results list.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

Tool documentation can explain matching and review features, but there is no universal keep-or-delete rule. Likewise, these documented examples do not establish that one tool is safest or fastest for every person, operating system, or collection of files.
