No phone case can guarantee that a phone will survive every fall. To choose a drop-protection case, first confirm it fits your exact phone model, then compare its coverage, construction, grip, and the details behind any drop-test claim.
Start with your exact phone model
Case fit is model-specific. Check the full make and model on the case listing before comparing protection claims; a case described for iPhone 17 or iPhone 13 Pro is not evidence that it fits another phone. Confirm the listing also matches any model or size variant you own.

Compare coverage and construction
Look for how the case is built and which areas it covers, rather than relying on a protection label alone. Manufacturer product pages describe features such as multiple material layers, shock-absorbing or grippy edges, and raised lips around the screen and camera. These are useful design details to compare, but their presence does not establish how a case will perform in every impact.
- Edges and corners: Check how the case wraps around the sides and corners, where a phone may strike during a fall.
- Screen and camera: Raised edges can help keep these surfaces from directly contacting a flat surface when the phone lands face down or on its back.
- Materials and grip: Compare the described layers and edge texture. Grip may help with handling, while material descriptions alone do not prove impact performance.
Understand what a drop-test multiple says
Drop-test figures are manufacturer claims, not a promise that a phone will not break. OtterBox says its explanation of the MIL-STD-810G 516.6 sequence involves 26 drops from four feet, and describes product claims as multiples of that sequence. The figures below are OtterBox’s claims; they were not independently tested or verified here.

OtterBox’s DROP+ testing explainer describes the sequence it uses; the product pages state the claims for the Defender Series Pro for iPhone 17 and Commuter Series for iPhone 13 Pro. A higher multiple is not proof that a case will be superior in every real-world fall, and these examples do not establish a universal ranking.
Balance protection features with everyday use
Features that affect daily handling can matter as much as the label. Check the listing for bulk, port covers, magnetic accessory or wireless charging support, and options such as a holster or strap. Confirm that the case works with accessories you already use rather than assuming compatibility from the case name.

- If you frequently use magnetic accessories or wireless charging, verify support for your phone and case combination.
- If dust exposure or covered ports matter to you, check whether the case has port covers and how they are described.
- If you want a screen protector, verify that it is compatible with both the exact phone and the case.
Consider a separate screen protector
A raised case lip and a screen protector address different parts of the problem. The lip may help keep the display or camera from touching a flat surface; a compatible screen protector adds a separate layer over the display. Neither feature guarantees that scratches or cracks will be prevented. Check fit with the exact phone and case before choosing a protector.
