To compare DLSS with native rendering fairly, capture the same scene at the same final output resolution, keep every other setting fixed, and align the images before judging them. A still screenshot can reveal differences in detail and artifacts in one frame; use matched video to assess flicker, ghosting, and stability in motion. There is no universal winner: results depend on the game, implementation, resolution, and settings.
Why a fair DLSS-versus-native comparison needs controls
DLSS is a suite of neural rendering technologies powered by NVIDIA RTX Tensor Cores, according to NVIDIA’s DLSS overview. That identifies the relevant hardware category, but it does not predict which rendering option will look better in a particular game. NVIDIA notes that users may prefer TAA in one game and DLSS in another depending on resolution, quality settings, and implementation (NVIDIA’s ICAT guidance).

Keep image quality and performance as separate questions. First compare modes with reasonably similar image quality; then measure frame rate or frame-time behavior. NVIDIA explicitly cautions that identically named quality modes do not necessarily produce equivalent results.
Set up a repeatable scene and fixed conditions
Choose a scene you can reproduce
Use a built-in benchmark, a save point, a fixed camera position, or a route you can repeat. Avoid comparing captures with different camera angles, animation states, weather, particles, or lighting. These changes can look like rendering differences even when they are caused by the scene.

Record settings before changing the rendering mode
Write down the game and build, display/output resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing, anti-aliasing, sharpening, field of view, and any driver-level overrides. Keep them unchanged between captures except for the rendering mode under test. If a game changes other settings automatically when you select DLSS, record those changes rather than treating the two captures as a one-variable comparison.
Render both conditions to the same final output resolution. Do not assume that a DLSS mode and a native option with similar names or labels are equivalent. Find modes that produce the most comparable image quality first; only then use performance as a deciding factor. This follows NVIDIA’s comparison guidance, not a claim that any particular mode wins.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Capture and align the images
- Recreate the scene. Load the same save, benchmark, camera position, or route for each condition.
- Capture the same instant. For still comparisons, pause at the same animation state if possible. Use the same screenshot method and verify that both files have the intended final output dimensions.
- Repeat for the other mode. Change only the rendering option being tested, then recreate and capture the scene again.
- Align before inspecting. Use a slider, side-by-side view, or synchronized video. Match stable scene features spatially; for video, synchronize the sequence in time as well. NVIDIA ICAT supports up to four screenshots or videos with sliders, side-by-side comparisons, and zoomed inspection, according to its guidance.
- Inspect the whole frame, then matching crops. Keep crop boundaries and magnification identical so that one image is not being judged with more enlargement or a different composition.
What to inspect—and what each capture can tell you
Use stills for spatial differences
Start with the full frame, then inspect identical crops around thin geometry, fine foliage, fences, text, moving edges, and distant detail. Note visible softness, aliasing, shimmer, ghosting, or reconstruction artifacts only when they appear in the captures. A still documents spatial differences at that moment; it cannot establish how stable details remain as the camera or objects move.

Use matched video for motion behavior
To assess flicker, ghosting, or detail stability, record video from the same repeatable sequence under both conditions. A matched video better represents moving gameplay, while still-image analysis is quicker for inspecting a selected frame. NVIDIA’s ICAT guidance makes the same distinction between the usefulness of video and the extra time required to analyze it.

- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.

Keep the comparison dimensions separate
- Spatial detail: fine geometry, texture detail, edges, and readable text.
- Artifacts: aliasing, shimmer, ghosting, softness, and unstable detail.
- Temporal stability: whether details remain consistent as the camera or objects move; judge this with matched video.
- Performance: frame rate or frame-time behavior, measured separately after image-quality modes are reasonably matched.
- Reproducibility: game build, settings, scene, capture path, and output dimensions.
Check the saved output and report the limits
Confirm the saved image dimensions and that the capture contains the final output image you intended to compare. NVIDIA specifically warns that GPU-level NVIDIA Image Scaling may require driver-level capture support; without supported capture, software can record the lower pre-upscaled resolution. That warning concerns Image Scaling and should not be generalized to every DLSS capture workflow (NVIDIA Image Scaling guidance).
When sharing a result, state the exact game and build, settings, output resolution, rendering mode, capture method, and scene. Describe what the frames or video show rather than declaring a universal winner: one scene and configuration cannot establish how DLSS and native rendering compare across other games or settings.

Common comparison problems and fixes
- The captures do not line up: Recreate the same camera position and scene state. Align matching features before inspecting; do not compare different angles or animation moments as if they were identical.
- The output dimensions differ: Check each saved file’s dimensions and the game’s output resolution. Re-capture if one image does not represent the same final resolution.
- One mode looks better but also uses different settings: Restore the recorded preset and options, then change only the rendering mode. Note any settings the game changes automatically.
- A still seems clean, but motion looks unstable: A still cannot settle a temporal question. Record and compare the same moving sequence.
- The screenshot may be pre-upscaled: If the case involves GPU-level NVIDIA Image Scaling, check whether the capture path supports driver-level capture; NVIDIA warns that unsupported software capture can record the lower pre-upscaled image. Do not assume this specific caveat applies to all DLSS captures.
- The mode names match but image quality does not: Treat labels as labels, not proof of equivalence. Identify the closest image-quality match before comparing performance.
