Diesel generators and battery energy-storage systems (BESS) usually solve different parts of a data center’s backup-power problem. UPS batteries provide near-instantaneous power conditioning and ride-through; generators can supply power for longer outages while fuel and operating support remain available. A BESS can deliver fast power and a defined amount of stored energy, but it is not automatically a long-duration replacement for a generator. Compare complete systems against your critical load, required autonomy, outage scenarios, redundancy, integration controls, site constraints, and lifecycle costs.

Start with the backup roles, not the equipment labels

A typical architecture uses the UPS to bridge a power interruption and protect equipment from sags, surges, and other power-quality problems. Its batteries provide time for standby generation to start and take load, or for an orderly shutdown if sustained backup is unavailable. ENERGY STAR describes UPS battery support in data centers as ranging from seconds to tens of minutes; that is a general description, not a guaranteed runtime for a particular system. ENERGY STAR’s UPS guidance also explains the UPS power-conditioning role.

A standby generator serves the longer-duration role, provided it starts, accepts the required load, and can keep operating. A battery energy-storage system stores a finite amount of usable energy and supplies power through its power-conversion equipment. Its practical runtime depends on usable stored energy, the load being served, operating limits, and whether it can recharge. “Battery storage” therefore needs to be specified by both power and energy, plus its intended operating mode—not just a kW rating.

The U.S. EPA’s historical data-center report gives 10–30 seconds as an example of the time for emergency generators to pick up load. That is an estimate in a report published about 2007, not a current universal specification; use tested start, transfer, and load-acceptance data for the equipment under consideration. EPA, The Role of Distributed Generation and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Systems in Data Centers.

Define the mission before comparing options

Write down what the backup system must keep running and for how long. “The data center” is not a single load: cooling, networking, storage, compute, controls, and safety systems can have different priorities. The design should state whether the objective is uninterrupted service, a controlled reduction in service, or safe shutdown.

  • Critical load: Identify the circuits and systems that must remain powered, and how their demand changes during an outage.
  • Autonomy: Set the target duration at that critical load, including the outage scenarios the design is expected to survive.
  • Redundancy and uptime: Specify which components may fail without losing the required service and how maintenance or testing affects available capacity.
  • Outage profile: Consider brief interruptions, longer grid outages, repeated interruptions, and the time and access needed to restore grid power or replenish fuel.
  • End state: Decide whether the system must sustain normal operation, support a reduced critical load, or provide enough time for a safe shutdown.

For UPS decisions, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program recommends considering equipment type, capacity and quantity, power-conditioning needs, redundancy, and required uptime. It also notes that UPS efficiency varies with load and discusses modular systems for growth and partial-load operation. Those purchasing factors help assess UPS equipment; they do not by themselves determine the right size or design for a facility-scale BESS. Compare the systems on the dimensions that determine performance

Decision factor Diesel generator Battery storage / UPS batteries
Response Must start and pick up load through the designed switching and protection scheme. Actual timing and load acceptance depend on the equipment and installation. UPS batteries support near-instantaneous continuity; a BESS can respond rapidly through its inverter and controls. Verify the specific system’s tested response and its interaction with the UPS.
Duration Can continue generating while fuel, maintenance, operating conditions, and refueling support permit. Limited by usable stored energy and the load served. For extended or repeated outages, establish how and when the batteries recharge.
Reliability factors Start failure, maintenance, testing, fuel quantity or quality, and delivery logistics affect performance. State of charge, power and energy sizing, controls, and outage length affect performance.
On-site effects Combustion produces air pollutants; operation may also bring noise, smoke, and odor. Permits and operating limits depend on location. No combustion emissions during discharge. That does not establish zero lifecycle emissions: those depend on the electricity used for charging and the battery supply chain, among other factors.
Safety and siting Requires planning for fuel storage, exhaust, fire protection, noise, and refueling access. Lithium-ion installations need fire-safety planning and incident response, including consideration of harmful gases from a fire.
Integration Requires appropriate switching, protection, and load-acceptance design. Inverters and controls must coordinate with UPS operation, generation, and facility segments—particularly when islanded.
Lifecycle economics Consider equipment, maintenance, test fuel, permitted operating time, fuel, and logistics. Consider equipment, charging energy, efficiency, degradation and replacement, and any applicable grid services.

The reliability comparison should cover the whole backup path, not a claim that one component is inherently more reliable. NREL’s 2023 analysis considers outages from one hour to two weeks and evaluates diesel generators and other distributed resources, including lithium-ion BESS. It uses empirical data where available and modeling otherwise, and warns that treating distributed energy resources as perfectly reliable can produce large errors, particularly for long outages. The analysis range describes the report’s scope; it does not mean every technology can power a data center for two weeks. Choose a configuration that fits the outage strategy

UPS plus standby generator

This conventional arrangement separates power conditioning and short ride-through from longer-duration generation. The UPS carries the load during the interruption and generator start/transfer sequence; the generator then sustains the designated load. Confirm that transfer behavior, generator load acceptance, protection settings, and UPS behavior have been engineered and tested together. The EPA describes this role split in its data-center report, while noting that poor maintenance and inadequate testing can reduce generator reliability. EPA’s historical data-center report.

UPS plus BESS, without a generator

This may suit a mission with a clearly bounded outage window or a defined reduced-load or shutdown objective, if the storage is sized for the actual load and duration and a credible recharge plan exists. Do not infer long-duration capability from a power rating alone. Model usable energy, load variation, reserve state of charge, and the consequences of an outage that lasts longer than planned.

UPS, BESS, and generator together

A hybrid can use storage for rapid response while retaining generator-backed duration. Its benefit depends on the architecture and controls, not simply on adding equipment. The 2026 Idaho National Laboratory data-center playbook describes instantaneous continuity from UPS designs and sustained outage operation from generation and storage sized to the mission. It flags coordination among UPS systems, generator governors, and facility segmentation as important to avoiding instability in islanded operation. Include safety, permits, and operating limits in the design

Neither option is free of site constraints. Diesel systems require review of fuel storage, exhaust, access for refueling, noise, and local air-quality and operating rules. Battery storage also requires engineered siting and emergency planning: EPA notes that lithium battery fires have occurred at installations and addresses safe planning and incident response, including hazardous gases from fires. This is a reason to plan for battery safety, not to treat every installation as unsafe. EPA, Battery Energy Storage Systems: Main Considerations for Safe Installation and Incident Response.

Applicable fire, electrical, environmental, building, and operating requirements vary by jurisdiction and project. Confirm them with local authorities and qualified fire and electrical professionals; the equipment choice alone does not establish what a site may install or operate.

Build a lifecycle comparison instead of looking for a universal winner

The available sources do not establish a current, directly comparable lifetime-cost or full lifecycle-emissions winner for diesel versus BESS at an unspecified data center. A useful project comparison needs local assumptions: load profile, outage frequency and duration, grid charging mix, fuel price and delivery, permitted generator runtime, battery life and replacement, efficiency, maintenance, redundancy, and the value (if any) of grid services. Include the cost of controls, switching, commissioning, and any required site work in both alternatives.

Keep emissions claims precise. Diesel combustion has on-site emissions and local effects during operation. A battery has no combustion emissions while discharging, but a complete lifecycle comparison would also need to account for charging electricity and battery production and replacement; the cited sources do not quantify those factors for a particular site.

Use this checklist for a defensible comparison

  1. Map the load: Provide the critical-load list and time-varying demand, including starting or transient requirements.
  2. Set outage scenarios: Define the duration, frequency, and sequence of interruptions the system must handle, plus the target autonomy and shutdown strategy.
  3. Request comparable specifications: For each proposal, obtain usable battery energy and power at the intended operating conditions, generator start and load-pickup data, UPS runtime assumptions, redundancy, and expected performance as equipment ages.
  4. Document replenishment: Identify how a BESS recharges during a prolonged or repeated outage, or how fuel is stored and delivered for a generator, including access and timing assumptions.
  5. Review integration: Require a design for UPS, generator, storage, switching, protection, facility segmentation, and islanded operation, with commissioning and functional testing plans.
  6. Verify site constraints: Check applicable permits, runtime limits, fire and electrical requirements, fuel and exhaust arrangements, and emergency response with the relevant authorities and qualified professionals.
  7. Compare lifecycle scenarios: Use local cost, energy, fuel, maintenance, replacement, efficiency, and operating-limit assumptions. Test more than one outage and load scenario rather than relying on a single headline estimate.
