Compare the exact vault and the markets it uses—not just its name or displayed yield. Before depositing, check what collateral supports borrowing, how liquidations work, what fees the vault actually charges, who can change its strategy, and whether the assets needed for withdrawals are available.
Start with the vault’s underlying markets
A vault is an allocation strategy, not a complete description of the risks your deposit takes. Find the markets or reserves it currently uses, then assess each exposure separately. An advertised yield does not tell you what assets borrowers pledge, which protocol holds or manages the position, or how readily you can exit.

For every underlying market, record the collateral asset, the asset borrowed, the price oracle used to value collateral, and the applicable loan-to-value and liquidation parameters. Also note the chain and protocol: similar names or strategies do not establish that two vaults use the same markets or settings.

Build an exposure map
| What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Collateral and loan assets | Shows what borrowers must pledge and what they owe. Concentration in one collateral asset or issuer can make a vault sensitive to a single asset’s problems. |
| Oracle | Borrowing and liquidation decisions depend on price data. Check which oracle the market uses and consider what a delayed, inaccurate, or unavailable price could mean. |
| Liquidation parameter | Shows the point at which a borrower’s position can become eligible for liquidation. Parameters and terminology differ by protocol. |
| Market, protocol, and allocation share | Reveals whether the vault spreads assets across exposures or relies heavily on one market, protocol, or risk source. |
Aave V3 documents reserve-level loan-to-value and liquidation-threshold parameters. Its health factor changes as collateral and debt values change, including as interest accrues; a health factor below 1 makes a position eligible for liquidation. Morpho markets use an immutable liquidation LTV for each market, and liquidation can occur when a borrower’s LTV exceeds that threshold. These are different mechanisms, so compare the actual market settings rather than treating the terms as interchangeable.

Compare the vault and market risk controls
Market rules govern borrowing and collateral, while vault rules govern where deposits can be allocated and who can alter that allocation. A vault can add useful constraints, but a control matters only if it is enabled, applies to the relevant risk, and cannot be changed without appropriate limits or oversight.
Check allocation limits and strategy permissions
- Look for absolute caps that limit the amount allocated to a risk and relative caps that limit its share of the vault.
- Check whether risks are grouped by collateral, oracle, protocol, or another identifier. A cap on one category does not necessarily limit concentration in another.
- Review which adapters or strategies are approved to move or allocate assets, and whether the approved adapter registry can be changed or locked.
- Check for access gates on deposits, withdrawals, or receipt-token transfers, and establish who can enable or change them.
- Inspect liquidity-allocation rules and any idle balance. Assets held outside a market may be available for an exit, but an allocator cannot guarantee that liquidity will be available when needed.
Morpho Vault V2 documentation describes adapters, granular risk caps, optional gates, and the ability for a curator to lock the official adapter registry so it cannot be changed. Those features do not establish that a particular vault has enabled them. Verify the configuration and the current permissions on the exact vault.

Identify who can change what
For each important control, identify the authority that can set or modify it: for example, a curator, owner, or governance process. Check whether a change is delayed, immediately effective, or irreversible. Protocol-level immutability does not by itself remove curator, owner, governance, or market risks. Morpho’s risk documentation also identifies the possibility that an owner can replace a curator, which is relevant because the curator controls the vault strategy.
Work out the fee charged by this vault
Record the fee actually specified for the vault, what it is charged on, and which layer receives it. A fee taken from yield affects what depositors retain; other strategy or wrapper charges may sit elsewhere. A displayed rate alone may not show every cost.
Rank #3
Aave Simple Earn documentation says vault managers may take a fee on yield. Morpho’s risk documentation describes caps on management and performance fees. A cap is a maximum permitted amount, not proof that a vault charges that amount—or that it captures every possible charge. Check the current vault terms and any fee wrapper or strategy-specific charges before comparing net returns.
Understand liquidation and the possibility of losses
Liquidation is intended to address an undercollateralized borrower position; it is not a guarantee that lenders will recover all assets. In Aave, when a position’s health factor falls below 1, liquidators may repay part of the debt and receive collateral at a discount. In Morpho, liquidation can occur when market LTV exceeds the market’s liquidation LTV.
Rank #4
A rapid collateral-price decline, an oracle problem, or too little liquidity to complete liquidations can leave bad debt. If borrowers’ obligations cannot be recovered in full, assets available to lenders may fall. Assess what the vault is exposed to and how its markets handle liquidations; the presence of a liquidation mechanism alone does not establish principal protection.
Check whether and how you can withdraw
Withdrawal availability depends on more than the vault’s displayed balance. Check the vault’s idle liquidity, the utilization of its underlying markets, where assets are allocated, and the route a withdrawal must take. A strategy may need liquidity from borrowers or from assets allocated elsewhere before it can meet an exit.
Best Value
Aave’s Stable Vault disclosure warns that high utilization or stressed markets may delay or temporarily prevent withdrawals; severe cases may cause partial or total loss. Morpho Public Allocator can move liquidity held elsewhere among participating vaults, but this does not eliminate the possibility that an isolated market runs short while assets are elsewhere or idle in the vault.
Before depositing, establish the actual exit conditions: whether a withdrawal is available immediately or depends on liquidity, whether it is paid in kind or requires another asset to be available, and whether a gate or queue can apply. A displayed rate is neither a promise of immediate withdrawal nor protection of principal.

Aave V3 reserve-based lending and Morpho curated Vault V2 strategies are documented approaches, not interchangeable products. The relevant comparison is the exact vault alongside the current markets and settings it uses. The documentation does not establish a universal winner.

Quick Recap
A practical due-diligence checklist
- Identify the exact vault. Confirm the chain, vault configuration, and current markets or reserves it allocates to.
- Map each exposure. For every market, record collateral, loan asset, oracle, liquidation parameter, and concentration in the vault.
- Read the current fee terms. Identify the fee base, recipient, and any wrapper or strategy charges; distinguish an actual fee from a maximum cap.
- Inspect controls and authorities. Check allocation caps, risk groupings, adapters, gates, and liquidity rules, then identify who can change each one and on what terms.
- Trace a withdrawal. Determine what liquidity must be available, whether an exit can be delayed or gated, and what happens if the underlying market is stressed.
- Recheck before depositing. Treat protocol documentation as an explanation of mechanisms, not proof that a specific vault currently has a particular setting or fee.
