To compare coral reef images reliably, first standardize color and exposure, then align images of the same reef area and compare the same biological measure. A color adjustment cannot recover detail hidden by murky water or correct for a different camera viewpoint. For monitoring, overlapping photographs processed into a photomosaic or 3D model are more dependable than treating two unmatched photos as views of the same scene.
Choose what you are comparing before adjusting images
Decide whether the question is about color or coral condition, colony size, percent cover, reef complexity, or another measure. Collection and processing should match the monitoring objective; a visual color comparison does not by itself establish a change in cover or colony size. NOAA describes large-area imaging as a way to create dated seafloor records for tracking change over time (NOAA’s large-area imaging guide).

Standardize color and exposure
Set white balance at survey depth
In NOAA’s coral-imagery SOP, the tested workflow uses an 18% gray card at survey depth: fill the frame with the card, illuminate it evenly without shadow using ambient light, and set white balance before image collection on each structure-from-motion (SfM) dive. The SOP reports that its in-water color correction gave superior color grading and took less time than correcting imagery in software before annotation. That finding applies to NOAA’s tested workflow, not necessarily every camera or field condition (NOAA coral-imagery SOP).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep the original files
Preserve RAW files when available: the SOP notes that JPEG files allow less latitude for later correction. When comparing surveys, apply adjustments consistently and keep a record of them. Matching color and exposure can make images easier to compare, but it does not remove differences caused by water visibility or camera position.

Align the reef scene, not just the photographs
For monitoring, capture overlapping images along planned paths and include views from more than one distance and angle. SfM software uses shared landmarks in overlapping photographs to build mosaics and 3D models; NOAA’s general photogrammetry explainer describes correcting color balance and exposure as part of processing (NOAA photogrammetry explainer). NOAA’s large-area guide describes combining thousands of overlapping images to create photorealistic 3D representations of seafloor surfaces.
Compare corresponding locations in the aligned products, rather than comparing two isolated photos with different viewpoints as if they showed identical surfaces. The resulting maps and models can support time-series monitoring and extraction of ecological measures, but their usefulness depends on suitable image collection and processing.

Use scale references for measurements
If you need to measure colony size or another spatial change, use stable references of known distance during capture so the model can be assigned scale. NOAA’s SOP describes coded markers on rigid scale bars and recommends at least four bars for stronger top-down orientation in its workflow, with three as the minimum. These are protocol details for that workflow, not universal requirements for every survey.

Check the main sources of mismatch
| What to check | Why it matters | How to assess it |
|---|---|---|
| Color and exposure | Different white balance or exposure can make the same scene look different. | Check whether white balance was set under comparable conditions and whether image adjustments were applied consistently. |
| Water visibility and contrast | Haze and reduced detail can obscure features, lowering confidence in apparent changes. | Note whether one survey is visibly less clear; do not treat reduced contrast as evidence of biological change. |
| Coverage and overlap | Images need shared features and matching reef coverage to align corresponding areas. | Check that both surveys cover the same locations with enough overlap for alignment. |
| Camera geometry and scale | Different viewpoints distort apparent shape and size; measurements need a scale reference. | Review capture paths, viewing angles, and whether known scale references were included. |
| Metric and processing | Different outputs or measures cannot be compared as though they were the same. | Use the same metric, such as percent cover or colony size, and comparable processing for each survey. |
Interpret visibility differences cautiously
NOAA’s cited materials do not establish a universal water-visibility or turbidity cutoff for valid comparison. If one survey is noticeably hazier, separate what can be seen clearly from what may be hidden by lost detail or contrast. Qualify conclusions where visibility limits confidence; color correction cannot restore information that was not captured.

What aligned reef imagery can support
NOAA Fisheries reports that imagery and models derived from its SOP can yield coral density, colony size, condition, and taxonomic identification data comparable to diver rapid ecological assessments in the Pacific Islands monitoring program (NOAA Fisheries summary). That is a finding about the described program and workflow, not a guarantee for every reef, visibility condition, or camera setup.
