Use screenshots to compare what people actually saw in a search result, then inspect each landing page separately to see its current HTML title and meta description. Those are different kinds of evidence: Google can generate title links from several page and web signals, and it usually builds snippets from page content rather than simply copying the meta description. A screenshot is therefore a record of one result, for one query and viewing context—not proof of a competitor’s permanent metadata or search performance.
What screenshots can—and cannot—show
A search-results screenshot records the displayed title link, snippet, visible URL or breadcrumb, and surrounding result features at the moment of capture. It does not reveal the page’s underlying <title> or <meta name="description"> unless you inspect the page separately.

Google says its title links are generated automatically from multiple sources. These can include the HTML title, the main visual title, headings, og:title, prominent page text, anchor text, links pointing to the page, and WebSite structured data. A displayed title link may therefore differ from the title element. Google’s title-link guidance also notes that changes may take a few days to a few weeks to be noticed after recrawling and reprocessing.

Google may use a meta description when it considers it a more accurate summary. There is no universal character limit for a meta description: Google truncates the displayed snippet as needed, typically to fit the device width. See Google’s snippet guidance.

As Google puts it: “While we can’t manually change snippets for individual sites, we’re always working to make them as relevant as possible.” Treat a difference between declared metadata and displayed copy as an observation; a screenshot alone cannot establish which signal caused it.
How to make a fair, repeatable comparison
1. Fix the comparison context
Choose one query that represents the same search intent for all the pages you want to compare. Record the exact query, search engine, market or locale, language, device or viewport, capture date and time, and whether you were signed in or using a context that may personalize results. Keep those conditions consistent across competitors. This is a reproducibility practice: Google documents that snippets can change with the query, but does not prescribe a competitor screenshot protocol.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
2. Capture the results page clearly
Use a consistent viewport and capture enough of the page to show each result’s title link, snippet, visible URL or breadcrumb, and relevant neighboring SERP features. Keep the original image. Label it with the query and capture date; avoid cropping away context that affects how the result reads.

3. Transcribe what is visible, exactly
For each result, record the displayed title link and snippet verbatim. Preserve punctuation, visible ellipses, truncation, and brand wording. Keep the screenshot beside the transcription so someone else can check it. If a result is absent or text cannot be read, mark that fact rather than filling in what you think it said.

4. Inspect page metadata separately
Open each landing page or use an HTML inspection method to capture the current <title> and meta description. Record the destination URL and the date of inspection. Do not treat the screenshot as evidence of the page’s current HTML: the search result is generated from metadata and other signals, and may not reflect a recent page change.
5. Compare the evidence in one worksheet
Use one row per competitor. The declared metadata, displayed copy, capture conditions, and assessment should remain distinct fields so that a reviewer can see what was observed versus what was inspected.

| Field | What to record |
|---|---|

| Declared title | Current HTML <title> inspected on the landing page, with inspection date. |

| Declared meta description | Current HTML description inspected on the landing page, with inspection date. |
| Displayed snippet | Exact visible wording, including truncation. |
| Assessment | Accuracy, intent fit, distinctiveness, clarity, useful details, and any visible mismatch between metadata and result copy. |

6. Judge fit, not a supposed ideal length
- Accuracy: Does the title and description represent the actual destination page?
- Intent fit: Does the displayed copy address what the query appears to ask?
- Distinctiveness: Is the language specific to this page or generic and repeated across the site?
- Clarity: Can a searcher understand the subject quickly?
- Useful detail: Does the description reveal a relevant distinction that is not clear from the title?
- Metadata-to-result divergence: Does the visible wording differ from the inspected metadata? Record the difference without guessing its cause.
- Truncation and context: Which words are visible or cut off in this capture? Do not assume the same display on another query or device.
These criteria align with Google’s recommendations: page titles should be unique, clear, concise, and accurate; descriptions should be page-specific, relevant, and descriptive. Google identifies obsolete, inaccurate, boilerplate, and unclear titles as cases where its generated title link may differ from the supplied title. Its SEO Starter Guide also recommends useful, relevant descriptions rather than keyword strings that do not clearly describe a page.

How to report findings without overclaiming
Describe patterns visible in your evidence: repeated generic wording, missing page-specific details, a mismatch between the page title and result text, or snippets that emphasize different page content. State the query and capture context alongside the observation. A screenshot comparison does not establish that a competitor’s wording caused a ranking position or click-through result; it shows only what appeared under the conditions recorded.

If you need repeatable page screenshots for a workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For SERP comparisons, use it to capture the search-results URL under a consistent viewport and record your query and capture context alongside the returned image. A screenshot still shows displayed copy, not the underlying HTML metadata; inspect landing pages separately for that.
Example cURL request (replace the target URL with the search-results URL you intend to capture):
