Compare the same underlying item, the same option values and the same quantity before deciding which Shopify offer is cheaper. If you cannot find an exact match, mark the other product as a substitute and record what differs. Then compare the selected variant’s current price on the same currency, shipping and tax basis—not just the price shown on a collection card.
Why a product’s headline price can mislead
A Shopify product can have several variants—such as sizes, colors or pack counts—with different prices and sale details. A collection card may not show the offer for every variant. Shopify documents cases where variants’ compare-at prices are empty, zero or different, and the collection page may omit a sale indication even though the selected variant’s product page shows its own sale price. Inspect the specific option you intend to compare rather than assuming the card price applies across the product. Shopify’s sale-pricing guidance explains how sale and compare-at prices are displayed.

Also distinguish a compare-at price from a discount. The compare-at price is a reference value set at product or variant level; a discount is separate. Shopify says that when a sale price and compare-at price are set, both can appear on product and collection pages, while checkout displays only the sale price. A displayed reference price is therefore not necessarily the amount a buyer pays.

- Identify the underlying item. Check brand or maker, model or product identifier, product name, images and important specifications. Similar photos or a shared product category do not prove two listings are the same item.
- Match the variant values. Record the exact size, color, material, capacity, count, bundle contents or other options that affect the offer. Start with an exact match. If the competitor has no equivalent, label it a close substitute or unmatched and state the difference; do not rank it as an identical product. There is no universal cross-store matching standard established here, so make the rule explicit in your own records.
- Normalize the quantity. Compare the same number of pieces, volume or weight. If pack sizes differ, calculate a unit price only when the quantity and price data support it. Shopify documents unit pricing for products sold in different quantities or measurements in its unit pricing guidance.
- Capture the selected variant’s offer. Choose the relevant options on the competitor’s product page and note the price and any sale or discount conditions shown for that selection. Do not infer an option’s price from a product-level headline or another variant.
- Put both offers on the same payable-cost basis. Record currency and market, listed price, applicable sale price or discount, required purchase quantity, shipping and taxes when visible. Include coupon or other conditions that affect the amount. If shipping or tax is not known, mark it unknown—not zero. Shopify’s competitive pricing guidance discusses factors such as shipping, timing, coupons and other costs.
- Record availability and evidence. Note whether the selected option is in stock, on backorder, unavailable or of unknown status. Save the competitor URL, observation time, selected variant text, currency, visible price, cost assumptions and a screenshot or other capture reference. Recheck time-sensitive offers before publishing a comparison or changing prices.
What to record for each competitor offer
A compact comparison record makes uncertainty visible instead of hiding it in a single price column. Use one row per selected variant and keep the evidence with the row.
#1 Best Overall
| Field | What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Match status | Exact match, close substitute or unmatched | Shows whether a price ranking is genuinely like for like. |
| Product identity | Brand, model or identifier, and core specifications | Helps distinguish the same item from a lookalike. |
| Variant | Exact option labels and values on both stores | Different options may carry different prices. |
| Quantity basis | Pack count, volume, weight, included pieces and unit price when calculable | Prevents different package sizes from appearing equivalent. |
| Offer | Current selected-variant price, compare-at/reference price, and discount conditions | Separates the payable offer from reference pricing and conditional discounts. |
| Delivered-cost basis | Currency and market, shipping, visible taxes, minimum order quantity and coupon assumptions | A lower sticker price may not mean a lower checkout cost. |
| Availability | In stock, backorder, unavailable or unknown | An unavailable option may not be purchasable at the observed price. |
| Evidence | URL, timestamp, selected variant and capture reference | Makes price changes and disputed matches auditable. |
How to handle close substitutes
Sometimes no competitor listing matches every option or package detail. Keep the comparison useful by stating both the shared attributes and the difference. For example, if your item is a four-piece set and the other listing is a six-piece set, do not call the six-piece set cheaper based only on its total price. Compare price per piece if the pieces are equivalent and the prices are known, while noting differences in contents or quality that prevent a direct equivalence claim.
If an important attribute—such as material, capacity or bundle contents—is missing, record it as unknown. A similar name or image is not enough evidence to fill the gap. Keep exact matches and substitutes in separate groups when summarizing prices.
When price-monitoring tools help—and what they do not prove
Shopify describes Prisync as a service for collecting competitor prices and stock, sending notifications, exporting data and optionally supporting dynamic pricing. It also describes PriceMole as tracking competitor prices and stock with alerts and dynamic-pricing capabilities. Those descriptions establish collection and workflow features, not reliable equivalence matching across arbitrary stores. Before relying on an automated comparison, manually check representative cases such as different sizes, pack counts and bundles. Treat a match as unverified until the attributes line up. See Shopify’s overviews of Prisync and PriceMole.

Shopify’s developer example shows an extension obtaining competitor pricing for the currently selected variant. That is an implementation example, not a ready-made monitoring feature or a guarantee that a tool can map competitor variants correctly. The developer documentation is relevant if you are evaluating a custom implementation.

Why Shopify Smart Pricing is not a substitute for this comparison
Shopify says Smart Pricing does not directly benchmark against other brands or products, and generates one price tip per product that applies to all variants in an experiment. It may inform decisions about your own pricing, but it does not establish a like-for-like competitor price for each variant. See Shopify’s Smart Pricing overview.
