The cheapest-looking brokerage account is not necessarily the lowest-cost choice. Compare each candidate using the account you will open, the trades and services you will actually use, your typical cash balance, and whether you will borrow on margin. Then verify every relevant charge in the firm’s current fee schedule, Form CRS, account agreement, and cash-sweep disclosure.
This method separates brokerage charges from investment-product expenses, exposes conditional fees, and accounts for cash handling, service limitations, conflicts, and the cost of moving an existing account.

Start with a use case, not a headline commission
A comparison is meaningful only when every firm is measured against the same situation. Before looking at prices, write down what you expect to do. Include:
- Account type: Identify whether you need a taxable brokerage account, a retirement account, or another specific registration. A firm that does not support the required account is not a practical low-cost option.
- Investments: List the securities, funds, options, or other products you expect to buy. Availability, transaction charges, and product expenses can differ by investment.
- Activity: Estimate how often you will place orders, the order types you use, and whether you trade regularly or mainly hold.
- Balances: Estimate the amount normally invested and the cash likely to remain uninvested. Cash-sweep terms can materially change what that balance earns and what protections or fees apply.
- Services: Note the research, tools, customer support, managed services, human assistance, or other features you actually require.
- Margin: Decide whether borrowing is part of your plan. If not, do not let a heavily advertised margin rate outweigh costs and features you will use.
- Transfers: If you are moving an account, list the assets, registration, and whether you need them transferred without being sold.
The SEC advises evaluating a broker’s services, products, limitations, costs, compensation, and potential conflicts rather than relying on one advertised price. See SEC guidance on brokers.

Build one comparison sheet for every candidate
Use the same columns for each firm. Record the exact fee name, trigger, calculation, frequency, and the document and retrieval date where you found it. If a condition is unclear, mark it for a written or recorded question instead of assuming it does not apply.
| Comparison axis | Questions to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Account and service fit | Is the required account available? Are the investments, support channels, tools, and services offered? What limitations or eligibility rules apply? | A low fee is irrelevant if the account or service you need is unavailable. |
| Trading and transaction costs | What commissions, markups, markdowns, loads, exchange or order-related charges apply to the products and order types you expect to use? | Costs can arise when a trade is executed even when an advertised commission is zero. |
| Recurring and activity-based fees | Are there maintenance, inactivity, minimum-balance, platform, service, closing, wire, or other account charges? What triggers each one and how often is it billed? | Conditional charges can make a supposedly free account expensive for a particular balance or activity pattern. |
| Investment-level expenses | Do funds or other products impose expenses, transaction fees, loads, or other charges separate from the brokerage account? | Your total investing cost includes product expenses, not just the broker’s account fees. |
| Cash sweep | Where is uninvested cash placed? What rate applies, what minimums or eligibility rules exist, what fees can be charged, and what insurance arrangement covers the destination? | The sweep affects cash earnings, access, charges, and applicable protections. |
| Margin, if relevant | What is the current interest rate and tier method? When does interest accrue? Is cash netted against the loan? Is a margin account optional or the selected default? | Borrowing creates interest expense and can magnify losses. |
| Moving the account | What will the current and new firms charge? Are there transfer-out or retirement-account custodial fees? Can holdings move in kind? | A transfer charge or forced sale can change the economics and create tax consequences. |
| Compensation and conflicts | How does the firm receive compensation, and what conflicts or incentives should you understand? | The way a firm is paid can affect recommendations, services, or product availability. |
Separate transaction costs from account charges
Commissions are only one transaction cost
For each investment and order type, check whether the firm charges a commission or another execution-related amount. The SEC identifies commissions, markups, and markdowns as possible transaction costs. A markup or markdown can apply when a broker buys or sells from its own inventory, so a “no-commission” label does not answer every execution-cost question.
Some investments can also carry a sales load. Ask whether the load is paid when you buy, when you sell, or under another schedule, and whether the product has a separate transaction fee. Do not assume that a charge applying to one fund or security applies to every product in the account.

List the actual trades you expect rather than multiplying a promotional rate by an arbitrary number. For a long-term investor, the relevant questions may be whether a fund transaction fee or load applies and whether recurring account charges are triggered. For an active trader, the range of order types, execution-related charges, and platform or service fees may matter more. The correct comparison depends on the scenario you wrote down.
Find recurring, minimum-balance, and service fees
Account-related charges can include maintenance, inactivity, minimum-balance, closing, wire, transfer, platform, and service fees. They may be monthly, annual, one-time, or triggered by a specific event. For every fee, capture five details:
- Trigger: What event, balance, account type, or activity causes the fee?
- Amount or formula: Is it a fixed amount, a percentage of assets, or a tiered calculation?
- Timing: When is it assessed, and is a partial period prorated?
- Waiver: Can activity, electronic delivery, a minimum balance, or another condition remove it?
- Scope: Does it apply to every account or only to a particular registration, service, or investment?
Do not write “no account fee” merely because a firm advertises free trading. Confirm maintenance, inactivity, minimum-balance, platform, wire, transfer, and closing provisions in the current schedule. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on opening a brokerage account states: “Before opening your brokerage account, make sure you understand what fees will apply to your account.”
Include investment-product expenses in the total
A brokerage account can be inexpensive while the investments inside it still carry material expenses. Fund expenses, sales loads, transaction fees, and other product-level charges are separate from the broker’s account schedule. Record them on the same worksheet, but label them by product so you do not attribute an investment expense to the brokerage firm.
Compare like with like. If one candidate gives access to a particular fund and another does not, the product choice—not just the account fee—may determine the total cost. Check the fund or product’s own disclosure for the expense and transaction information, then verify whether the broker adds a separate purchase, sale, or service charge.

Analyze uninvested cash and sweep programs
Uninvested cash is usually handled under a sweep program that moves or invests it according to stated terms. Compare four elements:
- Destination: Identify where the cash goes and whether the program uses one destination or a choice of destinations.
- Rate: Record the rate that applies to your balance and how often it can change. A displayed rate is not a permanent promise.
- Eligibility and minimums: Check whether participation or a higher rate requires a minimum balance, account type, or other condition.
- Fees and insurance arrangement: Ask about maintenance, asset-based, withdrawal, or service transaction fees and what insurance arrangement applies to the destination.
The SEC’s Cash Sweep Programs for Uninvested Cash bulletin, dated May 14, 2025, explains that sweep programs can have minimums and account, asset-based, or withdrawal-related fees. Review the firm’s current sweep disclosure because rates, destinations, eligibility, and program terms can change.
Compare cash handling with your actual balance. A small idle balance may make the rate difference immaterial, while a large or frequently idle balance can make the destination and fees a central part of the decision. Also confirm how quickly cash can be used for a purchase or withdrawn; do not infer access rules from the quoted rate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Evaluate margin only if you may borrow
A cash account requires you to pay the full purchase amount. A margin account permits borrowing against account assets and charges interest. Margin can increase purchasing power but also increases potential losses; a decline can require additional funds or the sale of assets. The SEC’s margin-interest bulletin, dated April 7, 2022, explains why the rate and calculation method matter.
For a margin comparison, obtain the current rate schedule and ask:
- Are rates tiered by the size of the debit balance?
- What reference rate or adjustment is used, and how often can the rate change?
- When does interest begin and how is it accrued?
- Does the firm net available cash against the margin loan?
- Are there separate fees for borrowing, transfers, or special services?
- Can you open a cash account instead, or is margin selected by default?
Do not use an old illustrative rate as a current price. If you do not plan to borrow, compare whether the account is correctly registered as cash and concentrate on costs and features you will actually use.
Compare features as capabilities and limitations
Features are useful only when they solve a requirement. Make a short needs list—such as a particular account registration, eligible investment, support channel, research tool, recurring-investment function, or trading platform—and verify each item in firm disclosures.
Record limitations alongside capabilities. Examples include investment exclusions, service eligibility rules, minimum balances, restricted order types, unavailable support channels, or differences between taxable and retirement accounts. A feature that exists only on a higher-cost service tier should be recorded with that tier’s fee and eligibility condition.

Use the broker’s Form CRS and account agreement to understand the relationship and services, not just the marketing page. The SEC’s broker guidance recommends reviewing what the firm can provide and the limitations that apply.
Calculate the cost of moving an existing account
Ask both firms for a written estimate before initiating a transfer. The current firm may charge a transfer-out fee; the receiving firm may impose its own account or service charge. Retirement accounts can also have prorated custodial fees. The SEC describes these possibilities in its Investor Bulletin on transferring an investment account.
Check whether assets can transfer in kind
Ask whether each holding can move without being sold. If an asset must be liquidated, determine who initiates the sale, when it occurs, and what tax consequences or market exposure could result. A transfer that appears free can still be costly if it forces a sale at an unwanted time.
Verify any reimbursement in writing
Some firms may offer a waiver or reimbursement, but it is a firm-specific offer, not a general rule. Obtain the eligibility requirements, documentation, deadline, and maximum amount in writing. Do not subtract a possible reimbursement from your comparison until you know it applies to your account.
Review compensation and conflicts
Price is one part of broker selection. Read how the firm is compensated and what conflicts may arise from its services or products. Consider whether compensation is connected to transactions, assets, products, services, or another arrangement, and whether that relationship could influence what is presented to you.
Use the Form CRS and account agreement to identify the firm’s services, legal relationship, fees, and conflicts. If a description is vague, ask the firm to explain the incentive and how it affects your account. Keep the answer with your comparison records.
Use current documents in a fixed sequence
Gather the same documents for every candidate and record the retrieval date. A practical sequence is:

- Read Form CRS. Confirm services, account types, compensation, conflicts, and limitations.
- Read the account agreement. Look for definitions, calculation methods, authorization to change terms, transfer provisions, and dispute procedures.
- Collect sweep materials. Record the destination, rate description, minimums, fees, eligibility, withdrawal terms, and insurance arrangement.
- Build a like-for-like worksheet. Mark each cost as fixed, percentage-based, conditional, one-time, or product-level, and note its trigger.
- Ask targeted questions. Contact the firm about every undefined label, missing amount, or condition before opening or transferring.
- Save evidence. Keep the documents, answers, and retrieval dates because rates and programs can change.
Estimate cost from your own activity

Estimated annual cost = transaction charges + recurring account fees + activity-based fees + service fees + margin interest + transfer or closing charges for the period + investment-product expenses.
Separate one-time charges from recurring costs. A transfer fee belongs in the switching decision, not in an annual estimate for an account you are not moving. Likewise, margin interest belongs only if you expect to carry a debit balance. Product expenses should be identified separately so you can see whether a lower account fee is offset by a different investment choice.
Use ranges when a fee depends on uncertain activity. For example, calculate a low-activity case and a high-activity case using your own expected order counts and balances. Do not insert a market-wide average or a promotional price without a defined firm, account, date, and eligibility condition.
Questions to ask before you open or move the account
- Which exact event triggers this fee, and is it charged per account, per transaction, or per asset?
- Is the amount fixed, tiered, percentage-based, or subject to change?
- What balance, activity, delivery preference, or account type waives it?
- Does the charge apply to taxable and retirement accounts in the same way?
- Are there fees for the investment itself in addition to the brokerage charge?
- Where does uninvested cash go today, what rate applies, and what minimum is required?
- What fees or restrictions apply when cash is withdrawn or used for a purchase?
- If margin is enabled, how is interest calculated and is cash netted against the loan?
- Can every holding transfer in kind, and what will each firm charge?
- How is the firm compensated, and what conflicts should I consider?
- Where is each answer documented, and when was that document last updated?
Common comparison mistakes and the fix
Choosing the lowest advertised commission
Why it fails: It ignores markups, markdowns, loads, account fees, product expenses, cash treatment, and service limitations.
Fix: Complete the full worksheet for the products and activity you expect.
Assuming every account has the same fees
Why it fails: Fees can depend on registration, balance, service tier, investment, or activity.
Fix: Verify the exact account type and every eligibility condition in the schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTreating a cash-sweep rate as permanent
Why it fails: Rates and program terms can change, and minimums or fees may apply.
Best Value
Fix: Record the retrieval date, read the sweep disclosure, and recheck it when the balance or program changes.
Comparing margin rates when you will not borrow
Why it fails: It can distract from costs and capabilities that affect your actual account.
Fix: Confirm whether a cash account is available and compare margin only when borrowing is a real possibility.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring transfer mechanics
Why it fails: Transfer-out or custodial fees and forced sales can outweigh an apparent price advantage.
Fix: Ask both firms about charges and in-kind eligibility before submitting the transfer.
Relying on an old fee sheet
Why it fails: Brokerage prices, sweep rates, product availability, and margin terms are volatile.
Fix: Use current disclosures, save the retrieval date, and ask the firm to confirm any ambiguous term.

Use disclosures as the final check
Before deciding, read the current fee schedule, Form CRS, account agreement, and sweep materials together. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 bulletin on how fees and expenses affect an investment portfolio advises: “Read the fee schedule or other fee disclosure and ask questions to understand all the fees you are charged and why.”
Choose the firm whose documented services fit your account and whose total costs are understandable under your expected use. If you cannot explain when a charge applies, how it is calculated, or what condition waives it, pause the application or transfer until the firm provides a clear answer.
