There is no single best app for every child under 15. For children under 13, begin with services built around family-approved contacts and inspect their current invitation, chat, and sharing controls. For ages 13–14, Roblox can provide age-banded communication inside a game community, while Discord may fit a specific, well-moderated interest group only when an adult and child review the server and direct-message settings together. Choose by contact control, community openness, moderation, parent visibility, privacy, and spending—not by popularity or an app-store age label.
The age labels below are a starting shortlist from Common Sense Media’s February 5, 2026 guide, not a safety guarantee or permission to ignore a service’s terms. Minimum ages and legal requirements vary by country and can change, so verify the child’s location and the current platform rules immediately before creating an account.

Quick comparison: which type of app fits the child?
| Service | Age information from Common Sense Media | Primary use | Contact and community model | What parents should verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kinzoo Messenger for Families | Listed as 6+ by Common Sense Media | Child-oriented family communication | Intended for a family context; current contact-approval rules must be checked | Who may invite or message the child, parent controls, discoverability, and data practices |
| Azoomee | Listed as 6+ | Play, learning, and communication | Mixed activity and communication service; current chat and content features need review | Who can interact, what content is shared, purchase controls, and reporting tools |
| blinx | Listed as 8+ | Family picture and story sharing | More bounded family-sharing use case than an open server, subject to current invitation rules | Account eligibility, invitations, audience for posts, and deletion controls |
| GeckoLife | Listed as 8+ | Family-sharing social activity | Family-oriented sharing rather than a large public community, subject to current rules | Who can join, profile visibility, media sharing, and moderation |
| Zigazoo | Listed as 5+ | Creative challenges and social activity | Child-focused participation with social sharing; interaction and audience settings need inspection | Sharing defaults, comments or reactions, purchases, and parental controls |
| Roblox | Kids accounts cover ages 5–8; Select accounts cover ages 9–15 | Gaming with embedded communication | Age-banded game chat and trusted-friend features; availability varies by region | Age verification, chat defaults, friend permissions, parental controls, and the specific game’s moderation |
| Discord | 13+ service minimum in Common Sense Media’s guidance | Interest communities, school collaboration, and friend groups | Servers can be public or lightly moderated; direct messages can move conversations outside group view | Known-server membership, DM requests, content filters, reporting, privacy, and ongoing supervision |
“Listed” ages are editorial recommendations from Common Sense Media, not a universal legal standard. OECD’s 2025 review documents that service terms, local requirements, and app-store ratings can differ. A child who meets an app-store label may still be ineligible under the service’s terms or local law.

How to choose by age and purpose
Under 13: prioritize a closed contact circle
For a younger child, the safest starting design is usually one where an adult can define the people and spaces the child reaches. Family-sharing apps and child-oriented messengers can reduce unsolicited discovery compared with an open-interest server, but the label “for kids” does not tell you who can send an invitation, whether profiles are searchable, or how media is moderated. Open the current parent setup flow before registration and identify the exact path for approving contacts.

- Great Gift for Girls and Boys Ages 3-8:The kids smartphones is small, lightweight, and made from safe materials. It's an ideal gift for birthdays and Christmas for boys and girls aged 3 - 10.
Use the child’s actual purpose to narrow the list. If the goal is messaging grandparents or a small group of classmates, a bounded family service is more appropriate than a broad social feed. If the goal is creative participation, inspect whether challenges are visible to everyone, whether other users can comment or contact the child, and whether purchases are available. Keep the account private until the child demonstrates that they can recognize an inappropriate request and report it.
Ages 13–14: add communities only when there is a defined reason
At 13 or 14, a child may want a hobby group, a school project, or a gaming team. A service that permits broader communities can meet that need, but the risk changes when strangers can discover a username, join the same server, or start a direct message. Ask for the exact community before approving the account. A private class group with known members is a different environment from a public server indexed by topic.
Roblox and Discord illustrate the difference. Roblox embeds communication in games and applies age-banded rules. Discord is a general community platform with no separate kids mode, so safety depends on the particular server, the child’s settings, and adult follow-up. Neither should be treated as automatically suitable merely because a child has reached a stated minimum age.

Match the app to the communication task
| Child’s goal | Prefer | Reason | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Message relatives or a few known friends | Family-oriented messenger or sharing service | Smaller, more deliberate contact graph | Invitation approval, searchability, and media audience |
| Share photos and stories with relatives | Bounded family-sharing option such as blinx or GeckoLife | Designed around a known audience rather than open discovery | Who can forward, download, or comment on posts |
| Creative challenges with peers | Zigazoo or a comparable child-focused service | Activities give interaction a defined purpose | Public visibility, reactions, direct contact, and purchases |
| Communicate while gaming | Roblox with age and chat controls configured | Communication is tied to a game account and age band | Age verification, regional availability, trusted-friend status, and each game’s chat behavior |
| Join a school, club, or hobby community | Discord only for a specific, known and actively moderated server | Useful community tools for older teens, but broader discovery and DMs add risk | Server ownership, moderation coverage, DM requests, reporting, and adult review |
What each shortlisted service is best suited for
Kinzoo Messenger for Families
Common Sense Media lists Kinzoo Messenger for Families at 6+ and presents it as a child-oriented communication option. Its strongest potential fit is a family contact circle rather than an open social community. Before inviting a child, confirm whether parents approve every contact, whether a contact can invite another person, and whether the child’s profile can be found by username or phone number. Also establish what parents can see: a settings dashboard is not necessarily message-by-message access.
Azoomee
Azoomee combines play, learning, and communication and is listed at 6+. That combination can be useful for a child who wants activities as well as conversation, but it also creates more surfaces to review than a simple messenger. Check the current chat design, content feed, interaction tools, and purchase flow. Disable any feature the child does not need, and make sure the account cannot receive contact requests from unknown users.
blinx and GeckoLife
Both services are listed at 8+. Common Sense Media describes blinx around family pictures and stories and GeckoLife as a family-sharing social option. Those descriptions suggest a more bounded use case than a public server, but the practical protection comes from the current invitation and audience rules. Test the service with a parent account: create a sample post, inspect who can view it, and verify whether another member can reshare or download it. Do not assume “family” means every participant is known to your household.

This fake phone is a popular kids toy for girls boys age 3-12, the great surprise Christmas birthday travel gift for kids
Zigazoo
Zigazoo is listed at 5+ and is described as creative challenges and social media for kids. Creative prompts can give children a structured reason to participate, yet social features still require an audience decision. Review whether a challenge submission is public, whether comments or reactions are enabled, and whether users can start private conversations. Common Sense Media also notes purchases, so set a device-level purchase password and inspect any in-app transaction controls before handing over the account.
Roblox
Roblox is a gaming platform with embedded communication, not a dedicated messenger. Roblox describes Kids accounts as covering ages 5–8 and Select accounts as covering ages 9–15. Kids chat is off by default, and chat outside games is disabled; parents may enable limited in-game or one-to-one options. Select chat rules differ for ages 9–12 and 13–15. Parents can turn chat off for children under 13.
Available chat requires age checking and limits communication by age group and trusted-friend status. The exact feature set also varies by region. Configure the account rather than relying on the account category alone: confirm the child’s age is accurate, review who qualifies as a trusted contact, and check the settings again after a major platform update. A game’s own design can expose a child to text, voice, or user-created content even when the account-level settings are restrictive, so review the individual experiences the child enters.
Discord
Discord is described as a 13+ service suitable for organized interest communities, school collaboration, or friend groups. It has no separate kids mode. Servers may be public, invite-only, or unevenly moderated, and a direct message can move a conversation away from the group’s visible channels. For a 13- or 14-year-old, consider Discord only when there is a specific known community with responsible moderators.
Join the server with the child, read its rules and moderator list, and turn off message requests from people outside the child’s approved groups where the current controls allow it. Explain that a familiar topic does not make every member trustworthy. Review blocking and reporting together, and ask the child to tell an adult when someone requests secrecy, personal information, a private image, or a move to another app.
The six checks that matter more than popularity
1. Eligibility in the child’s country
Confirm the service’s minimum age, account category, and any local restriction. OECD’s 2025 review shows that terms and app-store ratings can differ, and that services may apply different rules by country. Never solve an age conflict by entering a false birth date. If the service is designed for younger users, use its real parent setup path; if the child is below the service minimum, choose another service.

2. Who can initiate contact?
Rank the available models from narrowest to broadest: parent-approved contacts, known friends, age-group connections, trusted friends, invite-only members, open server participants, and anyone who can find a username. Select the narrowest model that still serves the child’s purpose. Ask whether a blocked user can create a new account, whether friend-of-friend requests are possible, and whether the child can be added to a group without consent.
3. How open is the community?
A family album, one-to-one chat, game lobby, and public-interest server are not interchangeable. Openness increases the number of people who can discover the child and the amount of content an adult must help interpret. For a first account, avoid features that combine public profiles, algorithmic discovery, and unrestricted direct messages unless there is a compelling, supervised reason.
4. What moderation and reporting exist?
Look for content filters, blocking, reporting, moderator response procedures, and controls for text, images, voice, and links. A filter can reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that inappropriate material will be prevented. Test reporting with the child using a harmless example so they know where the control is and what happens after submission.

5. What can parents actually see?
Separate management from visibility. A parent dashboard may show account age, contacts, or time limits without showing message contents. Record which controls are available: approving contacts, viewing connections, disabling chat, limiting purchases, or receiving alerts. Tell the child what adults can and cannot see; clarity supports reporting and avoids a false assumption of continuous monitoring.
6. What happens to privacy and money?
Review location sharing, contact syncing, profile discoverability, data-sharing choices, purchases, and subscriptions in one sitting. Common Sense Media recommends turning off location except where needed, disabling contact syncing, starting with a private account, enabling two-factor authentication, and checking blocking and reporting tools. Use a device purchase password and remove stored payment methods from a child’s account when practical.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up an account safely: a repeatable procedure
- Confirm eligibility. Check the child’s real age, country, account type, and the service’s current terms. Do not substitute an app-store label for platform permission.
- Create the parent account first. Use the service’s official family or parent flow. Enter accurate information so age-banded controls work as intended.
- Choose the smallest contact circle. Add only people the family knows. Disable searchable profiles, contact syncing, and unsolicited requests when those options are available.
- Set communication limits. Turn off chat the child does not need. For Roblox, review the applicable Kids or Select rules, age verification, in-game chat, one-to-one options, and trusted-friend settings.
- Lock down privacy. Start with a private account, turn off location sharing unless necessary, restrict profile details, and inspect who can see photos, stories, challenge submissions, or server activity.
- Secure access. Enable two-factor authentication for the parent account and use a unique password. Keep recovery details with an adult.
- Review spending. Disable in-app purchases or require adult approval. Zigazoo’s listing includes purchases; any service with virtual goods or subscriptions deserves the same check.
- Practice safety actions. Show the child how to block, report, leave a group, preserve evidence, and ask for help. Rehearse with a benign account so the steps are familiar.
- Agree on review dates. Recheck settings after app updates, when the child joins a new community, and whenever contact or privacy policies change. Start restrictive and ease limits only after the child shows responsible behavior.
Device controls help, but they do not replace app controls
Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link can manage device-level time, content, and downloads. They cannot substitute for platform-specific controls over direct messages, friend requests, server membership, or profile visibility. Use both layers: device restrictions for installation and schedule, then the app’s own privacy and communication settings for who can reach the child.

Current age rules and jurisdiction warnings
Australia’s under-16 account restrictions
Australian eSafety says that from December 10, 2025, specified platforms must take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from having accounts. Its current list of services it considers outside the age-restricted social media category includes Discord, Messenger, Roblox, WhatsApp, and YouTube Kids. The commissioner’s FAQ, updated April 1, 2026, states: “The list of services required to take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from having accounts reflects eSafety’s views as at 10 December 2025 and 25 March 2026.” That statement is jurisdiction-specific and explicitly changeable; it is not a worldwide minimum age for messaging.

A service may set one contractual minimum, an app store may display another age rating, and a country may impose an additional restriction. The OECD’s 2025 report documents these differences. Check the child’s country, the current service terms, and any official regulator guidance at signup instead of copying an age from a review or a friend’s account.
Teaching children to use community features safely
Make contact requests discussable
Tell the child that an unexpected request is a question for an adult, not a test of politeness. A safe response is to pause, avoid replying, and show the request. Explain that usernames, profile pictures, mutual servers, and shared interests do not prove someone is the person they claim to be.
Set boundaries for private conversations
Agree that secrecy requests, pressure to move to another app, requests for personal details, and requests for images are reasons to stop and report. The child should know that an adult will help without taking away the device as an automatic punishment for reporting a problem.
Use a family review routine
At a regular interval, ask which communities the child joined, who can message them, what they learned from a report, and whether any setting feels confusing. Review the actual contact list and server list rather than relying on a general “everything okay?” question. As responsibility grows, relax one control at a time and record what changed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the available safety data does—and does not—say
The OECD’s 2025 report cites Protect Children’s 2024 finding that “37% of offenders have attempted to establish first contact with a child on a messaging app such as Telegram and WhatsApp.” This is a statistic about the reported offender sample and behavior; it is not the probability that an individual child will be contacted and it does not rank the safety of any app. It supports a practical rule: contact initiation and private-message controls deserve as much attention as the app’s age label.
