How to Compare ASIC Quality Across GPUs Without Treating It as a Performance Benchmark

ASIC Quality readings are not universal performance scores. Compare GPUs with the same benchmark or game, settings, and measurement—not a percentage alone.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ASIC Quality is a GPU hardware reading, not an FPS result or a general-purpose performance score. A higher percentage on one GPU does not establish that it will outperform another GPU, run games faster, or overclock better. To compare performance, use the same named benchmark or the same game at matching resolution and graphics settings.

What ASIC Quality tells you—and what it does not

ASIC Quality is a value reported for some GPUs by monitoring software. For newer NVIDIA GPUs, recent secondary reporting describes HWiNFO’s percentage as derived from a hardware-defined value called SPEEDO and as reflecting factory voltage and frequency characteristics. The percentage is described as specific to a GPU model, rather than as a universal scale.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters: a percentage is only comparable when the software’s measurement and calibration are comparable. The available NVIDIA documentation does not establish the exact conversion from SPEEDO to the displayed percentage or define a common calibration across GPU models. Do not treat a displayed percentage as a standardized rating shared by all vendors and generations.

In particular, ASIC Quality is not:

  • a frame-rate measurement or a named benchmark score;
  • a reliable ranking of performance across different GPU models;
  • a guarantee that a card will overclock farther, run cooler, or offer better value.

The available evidence does not establish a performance uplift, overclocking success rate, or other outcome that can be inferred from a higher reading. In practice, that means the percentage can be recorded as a reported characteristic, but it cannot answer the usual buying question—“Which card is faster?”—without separate performance evidence.

Keep three ideas distinct when reading a GPU specification or monitoring screen: the identity of the GPU model, the ASIC Quality value shown by a particular utility, and the card’s measured performance in a stated workload. A number can be useful to describe what the software reports without being useful for ranking. The mistake is not reporting the value; it is assigning it a meaning or scale that has not been documented.

Can you compare ASIC Quality between GPUs?

Do not rank different GPU models by their percentages unless the software publisher documents a shared calibration that makes those readings directly comparable. A percentage alone does not show that two cards were measured on the same scale. Even if both values appear in the same utility, that is not proof that the percentage has the same meaning across models or generations.

For a meaningful report, identify the GPU model and the monitoring-software version alongside the reading. Describe it as the value that tool reports for that card, not as a universal quality grade. If the readings come from different models, avoid statements such as “GPU A is better because its ASIC Quality is higher.” The figures do not support that conclusion.

There are two different comparison questions that are easy to conflate. If the question is simply what the software displayed for two cards, you can list both readings, each with its model and tool version. If the question is which card is faster, more suitable for a game, or a better buy, those readings are not the answer. Use performance results for the first two questions, and a separate value assessment for the last; ASIC Quality does not establish price or value.

Question What ASIC Quality can support What to use instead
Which GPU is faster? It does not establish a cross-model performance ranking. Results from the same defined benchmark test, or direct game tests at matching settings.
Which card has a higher reported reading? You can report each tool reading with its GPU model and software version. No replacement is needed if the question is only what each tool displayed; do not turn that into a performance conclusion.
Which card is more likely to overclock well? The reading does not guarantee overclocking headroom or success. Use directly tested overclocking results under stated conditions; the available evidence does not provide those results.
Which card offers better value? The reading does not establish performance or price. Compare price with the performance evidence relevant to your workload.

Why the field may be missing from your GPU

HWiNFO has added reporting support for selected GPU families over time; its release notes do not establish that the field is available on every card. The 2016 release notes list AMD RV7xx/M9x and NVIDIA Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell support. The 2022 release notes add AMD Vega and Navi discrete GPUs. These are named-family support notes, not a promise of universal availability or a definition of a cross-generation score.

If you do not see ASIC Quality, first check whether your exact GPU family and installed HWiNFO version are covered by the utility’s version history. A missing field does not by itself mean the card is faulty. Support can change across releases, so verify current availability for the device and software version rather than assuming all GPUs expose the reading.

Be precise about what a release note can tell you. A note that adds reporting for a named family establishes that the utility listed support for that family in that release; it does not establish support for every later or related GPU, nor does it promise that every board, driver, or software configuration will show the field. The practical check is the combination of your exact GPU and the version of HWiNFO you are using. If the field is absent, do not diagnose a hardware problem from that fact alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The history also cautions against assuming that availability has always been uniform. AMD RV7xx/M9x and NVIDIA Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell appear in the 2016 notes, while Vega and Navi discrete GPUs were added in the 2022 notes. Those separate entries show that reporting support has been introduced for selected families at different points. They do not turn the reading into a common scale across the listed families.

How to compare GPU performance fairly

Start with the workload you care about, then hold the test conditions constant. A benchmark score belongs to a particular test and scoring method; a game result belongs to a particular game, resolution, and quality settings. Neither is interchangeable with an unexplained hardware percentage.

  1. Choose the workload. Select a benchmark that represents the task you want to assess, or choose the specific game you play. Do not substitute ASIC Quality for this choice.
  2. Match the test. For benchmark results, use the same benchmark and test, and identify the benchmark version where available. For game results, use the same game and test conditions.
  3. Match the settings. Record resolution and graphics-quality settings for game comparisons. Use the same settings on each GPU; results from different settings are not a like-for-like comparison.
  4. Compare the same measurement. State whether you are comparing a benchmark score, average frame rate, or another reported measure. Do not mix different score types or combine a benchmark sub-score with a game frame rate as if they shared a scale.
  5. Report the result with its context. Name the test or game, benchmark version if applicable, resolution, settings, and the measurement being compared. If you also show ASIC Quality, label it separately and include the GPU model and monitoring-software version.

This is a comparison checklist, not a promise that every test answers every workload question. A result is interpretable only in relation to the workload and conditions it represents. If the goal is game performance, a benchmark score can provide one kind of evidence, but directly tested results in the game and settings of interest are more specific. If the goal is another workload, choose a benchmark for that workload rather than assuming a gaming test or ASIC Quality will stand in for it.

When two published results differ in benchmark version, test selection, resolution, visual-quality settings, or reported measure, make that difference visible. Do not silently combine unlike numbers into one ranking. The closer the test conditions are, the clearer the comparison; where they are not the same, describe the mismatch rather than presenting the figures as directly equivalent.

Benchmark scores are specific to their tests

UL’s 3DMark documentation illustrates why a benchmark name and score type matter. Time Spy’s Graphics score is calculated from frame rates in its graphics tests using a scaling constant. It is therefore a score tied to that test and scoring method, not a generic performance percentage.

Fire Strike reports distinct Graphics, Physics, and Combined scores. Those scores represent different parts of the test; comparing a Graphics score from one result with a Physics or Combined score from another does not answer which GPU has stronger graphics performance. Keep comparisons within the same test and score type.

3DMark’s published game-performance estimates are based on correlations between 3DMark scores and average frame rates in selected games under specific settings. They are estimates tied to those correlations and conditions, not a universal conversion from ASIC Quality to FPS. If game performance is the question, directly tested game results with stated settings are clearer evidence.

These examples show why “benchmark score” is not one interchangeable unit. A test has a workload, a score calculation, and sometimes multiple sub-scores. Time Spy’s Graphics score depends on its graphics-test frame rates and scaling constant. Fire Strike separates Graphics, Physics, and Combined results. A number from one score category cannot be substituted for a number from another just because both come from 3DMark.

Likewise, a benchmark estimate of game frame rates is not the same thing as a direct game test. UL describes estimates based on relationships between 3DMark scores and average frame rates in selected games at particular settings. Those relationships serve that estimate and those conditions. They do not provide a general formula that translates a hardware ASIC Quality percentage into a frame rate.

How to read an NVIDIA SPEEDO-based percentage

Recent reporting describes HWiNFO’s newer NVIDIA ASIC Quality percentage as derived from the hardware-defined SPEEDO value and scaled for a particular GPU model. This is secondary reporting: the NVIDIA documentation identified here does not explain the exact conversion formula or calibration range. Avoid presenting a precise formula, claiming NVIDIA endorses the percentage, or treating it as directly comparable across models.

Practically, SPEEDO is relevant as part of the explanation for how the utility may produce a reading; it does not turn that reading into a benchmark. Without an official definition of the conversion and a documented common calibration, the percentage cannot replace same-workload performance measurements.

When explaining the number, use cautious attribution: say that HWiNFO reports an ASIC Quality percentage and that secondary reporting describes it as SPEEDO-derived and model-specific. Do not write as though the exact calculation is public, universal, or officially defined by NVIDIA. The boundary is important: the available information supports a description of the reported relationship, but not a precise formula or a claim about how a particular percentage will translate into gaming speed, voltage behavior, or overclocking results.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Ranking unlike percentages: A higher value on a different model does not establish better performance. Keep the model and software version attached to the reported reading.
  • Calling the reading an FPS score: ASIC Quality is not a frame-rate figure. Use a benchmark result or directly tested game performance for that claim.
  • Mixing benchmark score types: Graphics, Physics, and Combined scores are distinct Fire Strike results. Compare like with like.
  • Omitting game settings: A frame-rate comparison without the game, resolution, and quality settings leaves out conditions needed to interpret it.
  • Promising overclocking results: The available evidence does not show that ASIC Quality predicts a guaranteed overclock or a particular stability outcome.
  • Assuming the field must appear: HWiNFO release history names specific GPU families and versions. Check support for the device in use instead of treating absence as an error.
  • Assuming a shared scale because one tool shows both values: A common software display does not, by itself, document a common calibration across models or generations.
  • Turning an estimate into a universal conversion: 3DMark game estimates relate to selected games and settings; they are not a formula for converting ASIC Quality to FPS.
  • Using a bare percentage in a chart: Without the GPU model and software version, readers cannot tell what the value describes. Add that context and keep it separate from benchmark columns.

A concise way to report a comparison

Keep the hardware reading and performance evidence in separate sentences or columns. For example, report ASIC Quality as “the value shown by HWiNFO for [GPU model] in [software version]” and report performance as the result of a named benchmark test or game under specified conditions. This wording makes clear what was measured and avoids implying that the two figures share a scale.

When benchmark conditions or a common ASIC Quality calibration are not established, say so rather than filling the gap with a ranking. A properly qualified result is more useful than a single percentage presented without its model, tool, workload, or scoring context.

A practical comparison table can keep the categories separate: list the GPU model, the benchmark or game, the benchmark version if applicable, the resolution and graphics settings, and the specific result being compared. Put an ASIC Quality reading in its own labeled field, with the monitoring utility and version. That layout lets readers see what the utility reported without suggesting that the percentage is a second performance score.

If reporting only ASIC Quality, phrase the claim narrowly: “HWiNFO showed [reading] for [GPU model] using [software version].” If reporting performance, state the test conditions and result independently. If the available results are not matched, identify what differs instead of implying a fair head-to-head. This distinction helps readers evaluate the evidence without overclaiming what either number means.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

Before using an ASIC Quality value in a comparison, ask what exact model it belongs to, which tool and version displayed it, and whether the claim is about the reading itself or about performance. If the claim is about speed, switch to a named benchmark or direct game test. Check that the benchmark test and version, or game and settings, match between the results being compared.

Then check that the performance measure matches as well. Compare the same named benchmark score type with the same type, or the same game’s frame-rate measure under the same resolution and quality settings. Do not compare one card’s Graphics score with another card’s Combined score, or a benchmark score with an ASIC Quality percentage. If the information needed for a like-for-like comparison is absent, the responsible conclusion is that the evidence does not establish a ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ASIC Quality on a GPU?

It is a value that some monitoring software reports for selected GPUs. For newer NVIDIA GPUs, secondary reporting describes HWiNFO’s percentage as SPEEDO-derived and specific to a GPU model. It is not an FPS result or a general-purpose benchmark score.

Can I compare ASIC Quality between GPUs?

You can report each tool reading with its GPU model and software version, but do not rank different models by the percentage unless the software publisher documents a shared calibration. A higher value alone does not establish higher performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does higher ASIC Quality mean better performance?

No performance ranking follows from the value alone. Compare the same named benchmark test or directly tested game at matching resolution and graphics settings, and compare the same score or frame-rate measure.

What does NVIDIA GPU SPEEDO mean?

Recent secondary reporting describes SPEEDO as a hardware-defined value from which HWiNFO derives a newer NVIDIA ASIC Quality percentage. NVIDIA documentation identified here does not explain the exact conversion formula or calibration range, so avoid treating the percentage as a universal scale or NVIDIA-endorsed benchmark.

Why can’t I see ASIC Quality in HWiNFO?

HWiNFO release notes list support for selected GPU families added in different versions, rather than promising availability on every GPU. Check your exact GPU family and installed HWiNFO version. An absent field alone does not mean the card is faulty.

Can ASIC Quality predict overclocking headroom or value?

The reported reading does not guarantee overclocking headroom, stability, or a particular outcome, and it does not establish price or value. Use directly tested overclocking results for overclock claims and compare price with relevant performance evidence for value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

ASIC Quality is a reported hardware characteristic, not a cross-GPU performance benchmark. Treat each percentage as a tool-specific reading tied to a GPU model and software version; compare speed with the same named benchmark or game, matching test conditions and measurement.
