Compare two timestamped captures of the same URL in the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, check that each replay is complete enough to interpret, and inspect the relevant difference in the original captures. Save both full replay URLs and describe what they show: two different appearances at two capture times. Screenshots alone do not establish exactly when a change happened, who made it, or whether it is legally authenticated evidence.
Find two captures of the same page
- Open the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine and enter the page’s original URL.
- In the capture history, choose one capture from before the suspected change and one from after it. Confirm that both are for the same page, not merely the same site.
- Open each replay and save its full timestamped URL. The timestamp in a capture URL uses the format
yyyymmddhhmmss. Record the date you accessed each replay as well as the timestamp.
The two archive timestamps bracket the observed difference; they do not necessarily identify the moment the underlying page changed. The Wayback Machine’s “Using The Wayback Machine” guidance explains how to browse captures and notes that archived pages may be incomplete.

Check that each replay is interpretable
Before comparing screenshots, make sure each replay represents the requested URL and capture date. Look for redirects, missing images, empty regions, or components that appear to be loading from the live site. The Internet Archive warns that some resources may be missing or may fall back to the original host. JavaScript-dependent features and pages that need forms or contact with the original site may not work as they did when captured.

- Check whether an interactive element or embedded resource may depend on live content.
- If a difference appears only in an incomplete or broken area, do not describe it as a confirmed change to the original page.
These checks matter because a replay is an archived rendering, not a guarantee that every original dependency was captured or will run in the same way.

Make the screenshots comparable
Render both archived pages with the same browser window dimensions, zoom level, and page position where possible. A side-by-side view or before-and-after slider is useful for inspecting layout, imagery, and visual hierarchy. An overlay or pixel-difference image can help locate regions that changed, but it cannot explain why they changed.
Keep the original screenshots unchanged. If you annotate them or generate a difference image, save that separately and retain the method or settings used. There is no universal browser setup or pixel-difference threshold that proves a change. In its September 2026 article “What Can a Computer See?: Testing the Limits of Automated QA for Web Archives,” the Library of Congress describes automated similarity measures as aids for directing human review, not substitutes for context. Its reported pHash distance above 26 applied to the tested material; it is not a general threshold for deciding whether a webpage changed.
Choose the comparison method that fits the claim

The Wayback Changes feature is particularly useful when the question is about wording: it lets you select two timestamped versions and view highlighted text differences. For claims about appearance, inspect each original replay and screenshot as well. A text diff can support a wording claim, while a screenshot can show a rendered appearance; neither automatically explains the cause.

Describe the result without overstating it
A careful comparison identifies the original URL, the archive service, both full timestamped replay URLs, the access date, and the method used. State the specific observed difference and any relevant capture limitations. For example: “The Wayback Machine replay for [earlier timestamp] shows the heading as ‘A’; the replay for [later timestamp] shows it as ‘B’. I compared the archived text and screenshots accessed on [date].” Replace the bracketed details with the actual records; do not imply the example wording is a finding.
Say that the captures show different appearances or text at two archive capture times. Unless other evidence supports it, do not claim the screenshots prove the exact time of the change, the identity of the person who made it, or the reason for it.
Preserve the records and cite them
- Keep the complete timestamped URLs, not just the site’s home page or a non-timestamped archive link.
- Retain unmodified screenshots and, if used, separate annotated images or difference outputs.
- Record access date, browser viewport and zoom where known, and any visible replay problems relevant to the comparison.
- For a claim about wording or page structure, preserve the relevant archived text or HTML comparison alongside the screenshots when available.
Internet Archive guidance relays MLA advice to cite the webpage as usual and add the Wayback Machine information. Citation is different from legal authentication: the Archive describes a separate certified-record or affidavit request process for legal proceedings. Whether a screenshot or archive record meets an evidentiary standard depends on jurisdiction and case context; an ordinary visual comparison should not be presented as authentication.

The replay is missing images or page sections
Check whether the missing items are archived resources, JavaScript-dependent content, or resources that load from the original host. Note the problem and avoid treating an absent asset as proof that the page originally lacked it. If the suspected change is in that area, seek another capture or corroborating archived text or HTML.

The two screenshots differ across the whole page
First compare browser dimensions, zoom, scroll position, and replay completeness. A global visual shift may come from different rendering conditions or missing dependencies rather than a redesign. Re-capture both replays under matching conditions if possible, then inspect the relevant region in each original.

Use it to find regions for human review, not as a verdict. Inspect the originals for meaningful page content and archive artifacts. No general numeric score establishes the significance or cause of a difference.
The Wayback Changes view shows text changes but not the visual change
Use the text highlights to investigate wording, then compare screenshots or archived markup for layout, image, and styling differences. The Changes view’s text comparison does not explain every visual difference.

You need to use the comparison in a legal proceeding
Do not label an ordinary screenshot comparison as certified evidence. Consult the applicable court rules and legal counsel, and review the Internet Archive’s separate certified-record or affidavit request process. This article cannot determine admissibility for an unspecified jurisdiction or case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Wayback timestamp show exactly when a page changed?
No. It identifies a capture time. Two captures can bracket an observed difference without establishing when between them the underlying edit occurred.
Is there a pixel-difference score that proves a webpage changed?
No general-purpose numeric threshold is established for that conclusion. Difference scores help locate visual changes for contextual review.
Can archived screenshots alone prove who made a change?
No. Different archived appearances do not by themselves establish authorship or cause.
