How to Compare Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind as Investments

Alphabet is publicly traded; Google DeepMind is part of the parent, while Anthropic and OpenAI are described in the cited materials as private companies. Their financing valuations are dated transaction figures, not comparable public share prices.

They are not three equivalent stocks. Alphabet is publicly traded, while Google DeepMind is part of Alphabet rather than a separately reported business. Anthropic and OpenAI are described in the cited materials as privately financed companies, not ordinary public-market shares. So the practical comparison is between a diversified public parent and two private-company investments—with different access, disclosure and liquidity.

What can an investor actually buy?

Alphabet is the public-market route to exposure to Google DeepMind. Google DeepMind is an AI research and development organization within Alphabet, not a separately listed security in the cited reporting. Buying Alphabet shares means buying exposure to the parent company’s broader businesses, not a direct, separately priced stake in DeepMind.

Anthropic and OpenAI are not presented in the cited materials as ordinary publicly traded shares. An SEC-filed fund registration statement described Anthropic as not currently publicly traded and not subject to Exchange Act reporting requirements at the time of that filing. OpenAI’s structure and financing announcements describe a private company, but do not establish an ordinary public listing. Private-company status can change, so check current company and regulatory records before acting; a financing announcement alone is not a way to buy shares on a public exchange.

For a private company, access—if available—may be limited to specific financing or secondary transactions, with eligibility, transfer restrictions and investor rights that differ from public stock ownership. The cited materials do not establish a complete current cap table or investor-rights schedule for either company.

What the headline valuations do—and do not—tell you

The private-company figures below are transaction-specific post-money valuations announced on different dates. They are not continuously quoted market prices, and they are not directly comparable to Alphabet’s public market capitalization.

Organization Reported figure How to interpret it
Anthropic Anthropic announced a $65 billion Series H financing at a $965 billion post-money valuation on May 28, 2026. A dated private-round valuation, not a public share price.
OpenAI OpenAI announced $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation on March 31, 2026. A dated private financing valuation, not a continuously traded market value.
Alphabet Publicly traded; the cited materials do not provide a comparable standalone valuation for Google DeepMind. Alphabet’s share price reflects the parent company, not an isolated DeepMind business.

The Anthropic and OpenAI announcements are separated by nearly two months. Their figures do not, by themselves, show which company is cheaper: a meaningful comparison would also need comparable information about the securities issued, investor rights, dilution, financial performance and the valuation date.

How much of Alphabet’s AI business can you see in its reporting?

Alphabet’s FY2025 Form 10-K says: “We report our segment results as Google Services, Google Cloud, and Other Bets.” It also says centralized AI-related research and development focused on advanced research and frontier models is reported in Alphabet-level activities. It does not report Google DeepMind as a standalone segment or investment.

That means Alphabet’s SEC-filed consolidated statements and segment disclosures are useful for assessing the parent, but they do not reveal DeepMind’s standalone revenue, costs or profit. You cannot use those disclosures to make a like-for-like profitability comparison between DeepMind and Anthropic or OpenAI.

Compare the exposures on the same questions

Access and liquidity

Alphabet shares are public securities. Private-company shares, by contrast, may be difficult or impossible to sell when an investor chooses. Alphabet’s FY2025 filing notes that returns on private-company investments can depend on a liquidity event such as an IPO, acquisition, private sale or other market event. The timing and value of such an event are uncertain.

Reporting and financial comparability

Alphabet provides consolidated SEC filings and segment reporting. The cited materials do not provide a matching audited dataset for Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind. In particular, they do not establish comparable revenue, operating margin, free cash flow or capital-efficiency figures for all three. Treat those comparisons as unknown rather than filling the gaps with unlike estimates.

Governance and investor rights

OpenAI describes its for-profit entity as OpenAI Group PBC and says the OpenAI Foundation holds a 26% equity stake. In its structure announcement, OpenAI said that stake was worth approximately $130 billion based on OpenAI Group’s stated valuation at the time. This is a company-reported ownership and valuation statement, not a complete cap table or an account of every investor’s rights. It does not, on its own, establish control, liquidation preference or the economic terms available to a particular investor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cited materials do not provide a directly comparable account of governance rights for Anthropic investors or Alphabet shareholders. Compare actual offering documents and shareholder disclosures where available; do not infer equivalent rights from the headline valuations.

Diversification and concentration

An Alphabet share represents exposure to a parent with Google Services, Google Cloud and Other Bets, as well as centralized AI research and development. It is therefore not a focused bet on DeepMind alone. A direct private-company investment, if accessible, would have a different concentration and liquidity profile. That difference describes the exposure; it does not predict which investment will perform better.

Funding and future capital needs

The financing announcements show large amounts of capital committed or raised, but they do not supply comparable cash-flow, burn-rate, dilution or capital-efficiency data. Without those figures on a consistent basis, the size of a round or a post-money valuation cannot establish how efficiently a company uses capital or how much future financing it may need.

A practical way to make the comparison

  1. Define the exposure. Decide whether you want a listed, diversified parent company or a focused private-company stake, if one is available to you.
  2. Check the route and restrictions. Confirm whether the security is publicly listed or offered privately, who may participate, what transfer limits apply and how an eventual sale could occur.
  3. Keep valuation dates and bases attached. Treat each private post-money figure as tied to its specific financing announcement; do not compare it directly with Alphabet’s market capitalization as though both were measured the same way.
  4. Separate disclosed facts from missing data. Use Alphabet’s filings to assess Alphabet, not to estimate DeepMind’s standalone results. For private firms, rely on current disclosures available to the investor and note where equivalent audited figures are absent.
  5. Read the rights, not just the headline number. Review the actual security, ownership, governance, dilution and liquidity terms for any transaction. The cited company announcements do not provide enough information to evaluate all of those terms.

This framework can clarify what each exposure represents, but the cited figures alone do not support a relative-return prediction or an investment recommendation.
