For Apple-device owners, AirPods Max 2 are another option, with USB-C lossless audio support but a listed weight of 386.2 grams. Those specifications help narrow the choice; they do not establish which headphones sound better, feel more comfortable, or cancel more noise.
Which Bose headphones are being compared?
Bose’s official name for the product is Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen). “Gen 2” here refers to that model, not a different QuietComfort Ultra product.

Bose rates its battery for up to 24 hours, or up to 18 hours with Immersive Audio. The company says its battery test used active noise cancelling and audio playback at 75 dBSPL. Its listed features include Bluetooth multipoint for two devices, USB-C wired listening and USB audio, lossless input up to 24-bit/48 kHz, and an included 3.5 mm-to-USB-C cable for airplane entertainment systems. Listening modes include Quiet, Aware, Immersion, Cinema, and Off. These are Bose’s specifications and feature descriptions, not independent measurements.
Bose describes its noise reduction as a combination of active cancellation, using microphones inside and outside the earcups, and passive reduction from the fit and headband clamping. That explanation does not show how the headphones compare with Sony or Apple in real-world use.

How the three models compare on published specifications
| Model | Manufacturer-rated battery | Wired and travel audio | Connectivity and other relevant details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) | Up to 24 hours with ANC and playback at 75 dBSPL in Bose’s stated test; up to 18 hours with Immersive Audio. Bose | USB-C wired listening and USB audio; included 3.5 mm-to-USB-C cable for airplane entertainment systems. Bose | Bluetooth multipoint for two devices; Quiet, Aware, Immersion, Cinema, and Off modes. Bose |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on, or up to 40 hours with it off. Sony | Not stated on the cited specification page. | Bluetooth 5.3; SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 codecs; ambient sound support. Sony |
| Apple AirPods Max 2 | Up to 20 hours of listening with Active Noise Cancellation enabled. Apple | USB-C lossless audio support. Apple | Listed weight: 386.2 g. They can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple says functionality may be limited. Apple |
The battery figures are manufacturer ratings from different product pages and test descriptions, not a controlled comparison. Sony’s published ANC-on figure is higher than Bose’s stated figure, but the sources do not show that the models were tested at identical volume or settings. Use the ratings as a starting point, not a guarantee of the same advantage in your own listening.
When the Sony WH-1000XM6 makes sense
Sony is the clearest alternative to investigate if battery life with noise cancelling enabled and codec choice are high on your list. Sony rates the WH-1000XM6 for up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on and lists SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 support. Whether those codecs benefit you depends on your playback device and listening setup; codec availability alone does not establish better sound quality.

For travel, check the details that affect your setup before choosing: whether you need a wired connection to an in-flight entertainment system, whether your phone or computer supports the codecs you want, and whether the headphones suit your comfort preferences. The cited Sony specification page does not state airplane-cable or wired-listening details, so do not assume those match Bose’s included cable arrangement.

When Apple AirPods Max 2 make sense
AirPods Max 2 are worth considering if you use Apple devices and want the specific ecosystem features associated with them. Apple lists up to 20 hours of listening with ANC enabled and USB-C lossless audio support. The cited specification page also says they can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, while warning that functionality may be limited.

Weight is a practical consideration for a travel headset: Apple lists the AirPods Max 2 at 386.2 g. That number is useful for comparing what you carry, but weight alone cannot tell you whether a particular person will find the headphones comfortable over a long flight. Compare fit and comfort in person if possible.
What to check before buying for flights and daily use
- Long-wear comfort: Try the fit if you can. The cited manufacturer specifications do not establish which model is most comfortable over several hours.
- Noise cancellation: Do not infer a cancellation winner from battery ratings or product descriptions. A fair performance judgment requires independent comparative testing.
- Battery with ANC on: Compare the manufacturer-rated figures and their qualifications, then leave room for variation in actual use.
- In-flight audio: If you use a seatback entertainment system, verify the connection and cable you need. Bose specifically lists an included 3.5 mm-to-USB-C cable; the cited Sony and Apple pages do not establish an equivalent cable arrangement.
- Phone and computer compatibility: Match codecs and features to the devices you actually use. Apple cautions that AirPods Max 2 functionality may be limited on non-Apple devices.
- Price: Check current prices directly before purchasing. Bose’s product page listed the US price as $359 when accessed, but that is a dated snapshot, not a current-price guarantee; the cited Sony and Apple pages do not establish current comparative prices.
Can the available specifications pick an overall winner?
No. The manufacturer pages establish some useful differences in rated battery life, codecs, wired audio information, weight, and platform compatibility. They do not establish a head-to-head winner for sound quality, comfort, microphone performance, or noise cancellation. Choose based on the features that match your devices and travel setup, and consult independent comparative listening tests for performance judgments the specifications cannot answer.
