How to Compare AI Model Costs by Task, Not Just Price per Token

Token prices are rates, not task costs. Learn how to compare AI models using actual usage, retries, cache, tool and media charges, quality, and latency.

To compare AI model costs fairly, run the same representative tasks through each candidate and measure the full spend required to produce an acceptable result. Token prices are only rates: actual cost also depends on input and output volume, cached context, reasoning or intermediate usage, retries, tools, media, region, and processing mode. Compare cost per accepted task alongside quality and latency—not price per token alone.

Why price per token does not tell you what a task costs

A token rate is one input to an estimate, not a final task price. Models may consume different amounts of context, produce different-length answers, or use different quantities of reasoning and tool activity to solve the same problem. A model with a lower listed rate can therefore cost more to complete the task successfully.

For each run, distinguish the billable categories your provider reports: ordinary input, cached input, output, and any separately billed reasoning or intermediate usage. Add charges for tools or modalities used. The applicable categories and billing units vary by provider, model, region, and feature, so check the current official pricing page for the exact configuration you plan to use.

A useful starting formula

OpenAI’s enterprise token-rate explanation expresses token charges as input tokens multiplied by the input rate, plus cached-input tokens multiplied by the cached-input rate, plus output tokens multiplied by the output rate, with token counts divided by one million when rates are quoted per million tokens. This is a provider-specific token calculation, not a universal formula for every provider or modality. Other charges may need to be added separately.

For current terms, consult OpenAI’s enterprise token rate card, OpenAI API pricing, Anthropic’s pricing documentation, and Google’s Gemini API pricing. Rates and eligibility can change; use the terms for the model, region, and processing mode in your estimate.

Build a comparison around representative tasks

  1. Choose a small, representative task set. Include the kinds of requests the application will actually handle, rather than relying on one unusually easy prompt.
  2. Define acceptance criteria before testing. Specify what counts as a usable result for each task—for example, required fields present, factual checks passed, or a designated reviewer accepting the output.
  3. Keep the comparison controlled. Give each candidate the same task instructions and inputs, and use the settings intended for deployment. Record the model and version, region, processing mode, and date checked.
  4. Capture actual usage for every attempt. Log input tokens, cached input or cache writes where reported, output tokens, separately reported reasoning or intermediate usage, retries, tool calls, and image, audio, or video use.
  5. Apply the matching current rates. Price each billable category separately. Keep assumptions about cache reuse, batch processing, region, and features visible rather than hiding them inside one blended token rate.
  6. Count all attempts needed to get an accepted result. Divide total spend by accepted completions, and report failures and retries so an inexpensive failed first attempt is not mistaken for an inexpensive completed task.
  7. Compare the trade-offs. Report cost per accepted task with quality or failure rate and latency. If requests vary substantially, show a range or distribution rather than a single number that conceals workload variation.

Include the factors that can change the bill

Input, output, and reasoning usage

Measure each model’s actual token mix on the shared task set. Do not assume two models use equal input or output simply because they receive the same prompt. If a provider reports reasoning or intermediate usage separately, include it under the applicable pricing rule; if it is incorporated into another reported category, follow that provider’s billing documentation rather than counting it twice.

Cached context

Caching can reduce the cost of repeated context, but only when the workload actually reuses context in a way that qualifies. Estimate cache reads or hits and cache writes separately where the provider prices them separately, and base the estimate on observed reuse. OpenAI describes prompt caching as a way to reduce costs for repeated input context; see its prompt caching documentation. Anthropic also documents cache-related pricing on its pricing page.

Batch versus interactive processing

Include a batch rate only when the task can tolerate asynchronous processing and the selected model and request qualify under the provider’s current terms. Batch and interactive workloads are different comparisons: a lower batch charge is not a like-for-like saving if the application needs an immediate response. Anthropic documents batch pricing and eligibility in its pricing documentation.

Tools and media

Images, audio, video, URL context, code execution, built-in tools, and server-side tools may change charges or usage accounting. Check the pricing for the exact combination you intend to run. OpenAI says built-in tool tokens are billed at the selected model’s token rates and its API endpoints are not priced separately; confirm whether a particular tool has additional charges on the current API pricing page. Anthropic notes that some server-side tools can add charges, while Google’s pricing documentation covers modality-specific inputs and features such as URL context and code execution.

What to report in a model cost comparison

Measure What to record Why it matters
Cost per accepted task Total charges for all attempts divided by accepted completions, using a stated acceptance criterion. Captures retries and failures rather than pricing only a single call.
Quality Task-set results, including error, failure, or rejection rate. A low bill is not useful if the outputs do not meet the required standard.
Latency Observed response timing under the tested processing mode. Batch and interactive options are not interchangeable when response time matters.
Usage mix Input, cached input, output, reported reasoning or intermediate usage, and retries. Different workload shapes can change actual cost even at similar list rates.
Features and context reuse Cache hits and writes, tool calls, and image, audio, or video usage. These may have distinct rates or billing rules.
Pricing conditions Model/version, date checked, region, platform, processing mode, and relevant eligibility assumptions. Rates and availability can vary across these conditions and change over time.

Do not use a rate-card comparison to declare one provider universally cheapest for a successful task. A March 2026 arXiv preprint, “The Price Reversal Phenomenon: When Cheaper Reasoning Models End Up Costing More,” argues that list prices can mis-rank actual reasoning-model costs and recommends cost-aware selection and per-request monitoring. It is a preprint, not a universal benchmark; its result is a reason to measure the workload rather than assume a ranking from listed rates.

Turn the measurements into a deployment decision

First eliminate candidates that miss the task’s acceptance standard. Among those that pass, compare cost per accepted completion and latency against the application’s requirements. If cost varies with request length, cache reuse, tool activity, or retries, use a representative distribution and state the assumptions behind it. Re-run the calculation when you change the model version, region, feature mix, or processing mode, and recheck official rates before relying on a published estimate.

For managed-agent or other feature-based offerings, inspect what the provider counts as billable. Google’s Gemini pricing page states that managed-agent inference includes intermediate input and reasoning tokens, making those terms relevant when estimating that service. Verify any current terms or dated promotions directly on the provider’s pricing page before including them.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
