To find a memory-hungry Proxmox VM, first check whether the node is under sustained memory pressure, then compare each VM’s reported use with its configured memory and workload. A high percentage on one VM is a clue, not proof of a problem: readings depend on guest reporting support, and Proxmox’s ballooning target is an allocation policy—not a warning threshold.
Start with the Proxmox node’s memory pressure
Open the node’s memory view in the Proxmox web interface and determine whether available memory is under sustained pressure. This establishes whether the host has a capacity concern before you single out a guest. A VM may show high use while the node still has adequate headroom; conversely, several moderate VM readings can coincide with pressure on the host.

Do not treat Proxmox’s documented default ballooning target of 80% as an alert threshold. It is the target used for automatic memory allocation, configurable per node with pvenode config set --ballooning-target. The target does not establish that a node is healthy or that any particular VM needs more or less memory. See the Proxmox VE Administration Guide.
Compare memory use across VMs
Inspect memory use in each VM’s web-interface view, then compare the readings with that VM’s configured memory and what it runs. Look for relative outliers: a VM whose use is consistently high compared with its allocation and workload deserves closer inspection, particularly if host pressure is also sustained. The sources do not establish one universal percentage at which a VM becomes “memory-hungry.”

Proxmox can use the ballooning device to gather detailed memory information from the guest operating system. This can be useful even when dynamic allocation is not enabled. Proxmox’s migration documentation notes that “Even if you do not need memory ballooning, it is used to gather detailed memory usage information from the guest OS.” See the Proxmox migration documentation.
Check what the VM’s reading represents
Before acting on a displayed number, check the VM’s configuration and whether the guest has the ballooning device and required guest support available. If that support is absent, do not assume the display directly measures application demand. Compare the Proxmox view with monitoring from inside the guest, where you can assess the operating system’s and applications’ memory use.

- Configured memory: the amount assigned to the VM is a limit or allocation context, not necessarily the amount currently needed by its workload.
- Guest-informed reporting: ballooning support can provide detailed guest memory information, including for fixed-memory VMs.
- Workload evidence: investigate the processes and workload inside an apparent outlier before changing its allocation.
Exact graph labels and calculations may vary by installed Proxmox release and guest configuration; there is no single calculation established here for every guest OS.
Keep VM and container readings separate
QEMU virtual machines and LXC containers do not use the same documented memory-accounting mechanism. Proxmox container memory limits use the cgroup memory controller, whereas VM memory reporting involves QEMU and ballooning. Label and interpret LXC readings separately rather than applying VM ballooning assumptions to containers. See the Proxmox VE Administration Guide.

Choose point-in-time checks or retained metrics
The built-in node and guest views are useful for an immediate check. If you need to see whether pressure or VM outliers recur over time, configure an external metrics destination. Proxmox documents Graphite and InfluxDB as options for periodically receiving statistics about hosts, virtual guests, and storage.
External metric server configuration is stored in /etc/pve/status.cfg and can also be edited in the web interface. Confirm the exact protocol, configuration fields, and metric definitions against your installed Proxmox release and chosen backend. The documentation does not establish Prometheus as a built-in destination. See Proxmox external metric server documentation.

A practical way to identify a real outlier
- Check the node: inspect memory status and establish whether pressure is sustained, rather than relying on one snapshot.
- Compare guests: review VM memory readings alongside configured memory and workload; identify relative outliers rather than applying an invented universal cutoff.
- Verify reporting: check the VM configuration and guest support for ballooning information. If unavailable, compare with in-guest monitoring.
- Investigate before changing allocations: confirm that the guest’s workload needs the memory and that the host has a capacity issue. A reading alone is not a diagnosis.
- Add history if needed: use a documented external metrics destination when a point-in-time view cannot show whether the condition persists.
How to interpret what you find
| Observation | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Sustained node pressure and one VM that stands out | A possible VM-level contributor; not proof that the VM alone caused the pressure. | Verify guest-informed reporting and inspect the VM’s workload. |
| High VM percentage without node pressure | The guest may be using much of its allocation, but the host may still have adequate headroom. | Compare its configured memory, workload, and trend over time. |
| VM display without guest reporting support | The value may not directly represent application demand. | Check configuration and guest drivers, then compare with monitoring inside the guest. |
| LXC container memory reading | A cgroup-based limit/accounting context, distinct from QEMU VM ballooning. | Interpret it as a container metric, not a VM ballooning reading. |
Use the installed release’s documentation for exact interface labels and metric meanings. Proxmox’s download listing identifies the 9.x Administration Guide as version 9.2, last updated August 10, 2026; that does not guarantee identical graphs or calculations across releases.
