What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Compare screenshots at explicitly defined desktop and tablet widths, capture the same page state in the same browser environment, and keep a separate reference image for each breakpoint. A visual difference shows where to investigate; it does not, by itself, prove a user-facing defect or explain its cause.
Set up a repeatable comparison
- Choose one page state. Fix the route, content, relevant data, and interaction state. If an AI agent clicks through a workflow, make sure it reaches the same state before each capture.
- Name the two viewport conditions. Specify exact desktop and tablet viewport widths and heights rather than relying on vague labels such as “desktop” or “tablet.” Choose widths that exercise the responsive breakpoints you care about.
- Keep capture settings consistent. Use the same browser version, operating system, fonts, rendering mode, test data, and screenshot scale for the reference and new captures wherever practical. Host and rendering differences can change screenshots even when the page has not meaningfully changed. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance describes this variability.
- Choose the capture extent. Use viewport screenshots to assess what is visible in the window. Use full-page screenshots when the question includes scrollable content, and use the same mode for both images. Playwright’s screenshot documentation distinguishes viewport and full-page captures.
- Save a reference for each condition. Keep desktop and tablet baselines separate. Compare each new desktop capture with the desktop reference, and each tablet capture with the tablet reference.
- Inspect the differences. Look for elements that moved, wrapped, disappeared, overflowed, or became obscured. Check the relevant DOM or accessibility structure if you need to determine whether an element remains present and usable.
Choose emulation or a controlled viewport
Use a device profile when the test needs more than a CSS viewport width—for example, simulated touch behavior or a device-specific user agent. Use an explicit viewport when the purpose is to test a precise responsive breakpoint. Playwright supports device profiles and viewport overrides; its documentation describes emulation, not proof of how every physical device renders. See Playwright Emulation.

When combining a device profile with an exact breakpoint width, spread the profile first and then set the viewport explicitly so the override takes effect:

These widths are example test conditions, not universal definitions of desktop and tablet. Replace them with widths appropriate to the breakpoints in your own design. A device preset can also set characteristics such as touch behavior and user agent; an explicit viewport alone does not reproduce every hardware or browser characteristic.

Capture and compare with Playwright Test
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference image on the first run and compares later runs against it. The test below uses distinct named snapshots for the two project conditions, assuming the page has reached the same stable state in both.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('responsive page matches its breakpoint screenshot', async ({ page }, testInfo) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Example Domain' }).waitFor();
const snapshotName = testInfo.project.name === 'tablet-breakpoint'
? 'example-tablet.png'
: 'example-desktop.png';
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(snapshotName);
});
Replace the example URL and readiness check with the route and state your test actually covers. Run the project for the intended breakpoint conditions, review the generated references, and preserve them with your test suite. When a design change is intentional, review and update the affected baseline rather than accepting every new image automatically. See Visual comparisons.

Choose screenshot scale and extent deliberately
| Choice | Use it to answer | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport capture | Does the layout fit and behave correctly in the visible window at this breakpoint? | Does not show content below the viewport. |
| Full-page capture | Does the entire scrollable page render as expected? | Produces a taller image; keep full-page mode consistent across comparisons. |
| CSS-pixel scale | How does the layout map to the CSS dimensions used by responsive rules? | Does not review high-density rendered detail at device-pixel resolution. |
| Device-pixel scale | How does the image look at higher-density device resolution? | Can produce substantially larger images. Playwright’s screenshot assertion documentation describes device scale as producing a pixel for each device pixel. |
Playwright’s PageAssertions documentation covers screenshot assertion options and device scale. Use one scale for the baseline and comparison capture; otherwise, image-size and rendering differences can obscure the responsive change you intended to inspect.

A pixel diff identifies changed image regions, not their cause or user impact. For a changed area, determine whether the page state differs, whether a responsive rule changed, or whether rendering conditions shifted. Then verify the relevant element’s presence, accessible name, and interaction behavior with DOM or accessibility assertions as appropriate.

Visual and structural checks answer different questions: screenshots show rendered appearance; accessibility snapshots expose page structure and interaction references. Playwright MCP’s screenshot guidance discusses both. A visual change alone does not establish that an element is semantically missing or unusable.
Common comparison problems
- Noise across repeated runs: Check whether the browser version, host operating system, fonts, headless mode, or test data changed. Align the environment before judging a visual diff.
- Desktop and tablet appear to share one reference: Use a distinct snapshot name or project-specific baseline for each viewport condition.
- The expected breakpoint does not activate: Confirm the actual viewport width after configuration and check the breakpoint values in the site’s CSS. If using a device profile, place the explicit viewport override after the profile configuration.
- Content changes between captures: Stabilize the route, data, interaction state, and any time-dependent content before saving or comparing references.
- Differences appear only below the fold: Use full-page capture for both images, or capture the relevant element consistently.
- The image is unexpectedly large: Check whether device-pixel scale is enabled. Use CSS-pixel scale if the question is responsive layout rather than high-density visual detail.
- A diff looks alarming but the page seems functional: Inspect the changed region and confirm with DOM, accessibility, and interaction checks. The image identifies a difference, not whether it is a defect.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request can capture a URL as an image or PDF; you can set viewport dimensions to capture the two conditions. The API also accepts the parameter names other screenshot APIs use. The call below captures an example tablet-width viewport as WebP; use your own URL and API key, and make a corresponding call with your desktop dimensions for the other image. Do tablet screenshots prove how a physical tablet will render a page?
No. Browser emulation helps test configured viewport and device characteristics, but it does not establish rendering behavior on every physical device.
Should desktop and tablet use the same visual baseline?
No. Keep a separate reference for each viewport condition so changes at one width are compared with the corresponding layout.
