Where to find requirements you can trust
Start with the publisher’s page or the game’s store listing, and make sure it is for the exact game and PC version you plan to play. Steam publishes system requirements on game pages, and Epic Games Support provides a PC verification guide. Requirements can be revised, so an old article or a third-party checker should not be your only source. Epic Games’ PC verification guide and the game’s own listing are better starting points.

Compare every requirement, not just the graphics card
Copy the complete minimum and recommended lists into a checklist. Official listings treat these as separate requirements, and matching one does not make up for a shortfall in another. Hogwarts Legacy’s Steam listing, for example, specifies operating system, CPU, RAM, graphics hardware, DirectX, and available storage.

- Operating system: Check the exact Windows version and whether the game requires a 64-bit operating system.
- Processor: Compare the named CPU model. If the listing gives alternatives joined by “or,” either may be acceptable, but the model—not just the brand or product family—is what matters.
- Memory: Match the RAM requirement and consider how much memory is available while the game runs. Steam Support notes that RAM availability can affect model loading and graphics rendering.
- Graphics card: Compare the full GPU model, including any specified VRAM amount. A matching brand name or clock speed alone does not establish equivalent performance.
- Graphics features and DirectX: Check both the listed API version and any feature requirements. A GPU can support the required DirectX version yet lack the needed pixel shader capability, so a DirectX match alone is not proof of compatibility. See Steam Support’s graphics troubleshooting guidance.
- Storage: Compare required available space with free space on a suitable drive, not the drive’s total capacity. Preserve any drive-type note, such as an SSD preference or HDD support.
How to compare CPU and GPU model names
Hardware names can be difficult to compare, especially when a listing names alternatives from different manufacturers. Do not infer that two cards or processors are equivalent because they share a brand, a product-family label, or a clock-speed figure. There is no universal conversion rule that reliably translates a model from one manufacturer into another. If you do not recognize a model, look for dependable comparisons of the exact CPU or GPU pair, ideally in the game you intend to play.

Understand what minimum and recommended mean for that game
Minimum and recommended are distinct targets, not universal promises about how a game will look or perform. Read any stated resolution, frame rate, and graphics preset alongside the hardware list.

These targets and parts are specific to the game’s Steam listing and may change; they do not define what minimum or recommended means in other games. Another example, in Square Enix’s PC requirements guidance, describes minimum at 60 fps and 1280×720 on Low, and recommended at 60 fps and 1920×1080 on Highest. That listing also includes a memory note for Intel GPU use. Treat such conditions as game-specific rather than general rules.

Classify your result: meets, falls short, or unclear
Mark each line against the official list instead of jumping straight to a yes or no. A single shortfall in a required operating system, CPU, GPU feature, RAM, or storage field can affect compatibility.
- Meets: Your component or system matches the stated requirement. This indicates a match to that listed criterion, not a guarantee that every session will be flawless.
- Falls short: One or more components do not meet a stated minimum. Treat the mismatch as a compatibility or performance risk; do not assume another stronger component cancels it out.
- Unclear: The listing omits a useful performance target, or you cannot confidently compare the exact hardware models. Check the game’s official support information or seek reliable benchmarks for the precise CPU/GPU combination.
When troubleshooting a system with integrated graphics, Steam Support recommends trying lower graphics settings. That may help in some cases, but it does not turn a missing required feature or an unmet hardware specification into a confirmed match.

Compare two possible PCs against the game you want to play
There is no universal winner based on a parts list alone. Compare each candidate system against the same game requirements and the resolution, frame rate, and quality level you want. Include processor and GPU models, graphics-feature support, RAM, operating-system compatibility, free storage, and whether the PC can be upgraded if it misses an important requirement.
Do not buy a component just because one specification looks low. First identify the exact gap, then confirm that the proposed CPU, GPU, memory, or drive is compatible with the computer and can actually be upgraded in it. A specific run-or-not verdict also depends on the exact game and the PC’s actual specifications.

Find your PC’s specifications before deciding
To make a useful comparison, gather the exact operating-system version, processor model, installed RAM, graphics adapter model and VRAM if listed, and free storage. The cited official PC-check guidance does not establish a Windows-version-specific path for finding every detail. For current steps, use Microsoft’s Windows help or the computer manufacturer’s support documentation, since the right method can depend on the device.
