Compare the gadget with your phone on the job you need done—not on the number of features in its sales pitch. A separate device is worthwhile when it reliably makes that job easier or possible in a way that matters to you, and that benefit outweighs its cost, upkeep, and privacy trade-offs. If your phone already does the job well enough, keeping it as your only device is a sound choice.
Start with the job, not the gadget
Write down the specific task you hope the new device will improve, then identify the phone feature you already use—or could use—for it. Be concrete: “count my steps when my phone is in my pocket” is more useful than “track my health.” Decide what a meaningful improvement would look like in your routine, such as being able to leave your phone aside or see information without taking it out.

That distinction matters because a longer feature list does not automatically make a gadget better for your use. For smartwatches and fitness trackers, for example, some models focus on basic tracking, while others add apps or can work independently of a phone. Consumer NZ’s buying guide discusses those differences; they are reasons to check the exact model, not proof that any watch outperforms any phone.

| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Capability | What can the gadget do that the phone cannot, or do substantially better for this task? |
| Measurement quality | Is there independent testing of the exact feature you care about? A sensor count or marketing name does not establish accuracy. |
| Convenience and comfort | Would a wearable, hands-free design, always-on display, or glanceable alert help in your daily routine? Will you actually carry or wear it? |
| Independence | Does it need the phone nearby, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, an account, an app, or a separate cellular plan? |
| Compatibility | Does the exact model work with your phone, operating system, apps, and accessories? |
| Ongoing effort | How often will you charge it? Will setup, updates, or reviewing its data add chores? |
| Privacy and security | What data and permissions does it need? Are its privacy controls clear and appropriately restrictive? |
| Total cost | Alongside the purchase price, are there required subscriptions, connectivity charges, replacement accessories, or other upkeep? |
Check whether its advantage is real in your routine
A dedicated sensor or different form factor can help, but only if it improves the task you named. Look for independent testing of that specific function and consider the conditions in which you will use it. Which? says its smartwatch tests examine battery life, fitness-tracking accuracy, usability, notifications, and privacy and security; its testing page describes its approach. Those categories are useful prompts for comparison, not a head-to-head result for an unspecified phone and gadget.
Convenience is practical performance, too. A wrist-worn tracker may be easier to check while your phone is put away, but it can also mean another device to charge, configure, and keep comfortable. Consumer Reports’ overview of smartwatches and fitness trackers describes features such as communications, payments, music, GPS, and health tracking, and notes that many models need a smartphone pairing for full functionality. Confirm which functions work without your particular phone before treating independence as a benefit.

Example: phone step counting versus a wrist-worn tracker
If you reliably carry your phone, it may be enough for counting your steps. A wrist-worn tracker may suit you better if you want continuous wear, at-a-glance information, or activity tracking while your phone is set aside. A smartwatch can add apps or communications, but its phone dependence varies by model.

Compare how each option fits the same activity and daily routine. A more convenient form factor may be valuable even when you have not established a measurement advantage. Do not assume every watch is more accurate than every phone; the answer depends on the precise devices, the task, and relevant testing. Consumer Reports also frames the question as whether a phone or smartwatch is a good-enough fitness tracker in its fitness-tracker overview.

Review privacy, permissions, and security
Before buying a connected gadget, find out whether it needs internet access, a phone app, or an account, and what data it collects. UK government guidance says some smart devices require an internet connection, app, or account and recommends checking manufacturer documentation and reviews; see Smart devices: using them safely in your home.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says connected devices can process sensitive information about health, routines, and family life. Its smart-device expectations emphasize privacy by default, collecting only necessary data, clear explanations, and meaningful control over consent. The ICO’s public guidance on smart products also notes that apps may request access to a phone’s microphone, location, camera, contacts, or photos. Review those permissions and data-sharing settings; a permission request alone does not show that a particular product is insecure.

Treat health readings according to their claims
A wellness feature is not automatically a medical device for diagnosis or treatment. The U.S. Government Accountability Office’s 2026 assessment says wearables have potential in clinical decision-making, but their reliability varies and integrating them into clinical workflows can be difficult. See GAO’s report on wearable technologies for that broader clinical context.

Make the purchase decision
- Name the job: Write down what you want to do and what your phone currently contributes.
- Set a useful threshold: Decide what improvement—such as hands-free access or tracking while the phone is away—would change your routine enough to matter.
- Verify the exact model: Check compatibility, needed connections and accounts, independent testing for the feature you care about, battery expectations, and comfort.
- Count the ongoing costs and chores: Include any required subscription or connectivity charge, accessories, charging, setup, and data review.
- Compare privacy requirements: Check data collection, app permissions, sharing controls, and manufacturer documentation before connecting it to your phone.
- Choose the simpler option if it meets your threshold: If your phone already does the job adequately and the gadget adds no benefit important enough to outweigh its price and upkeep, do not buy it.
There is no universal winner for a generic phone-and-gadget comparison: the phone, device, task, and user all matter. Compare named models on the same job and criteria rather than treating category advice as a product test.
