How to Communicate Construction Closures and Detours on a Campus Website

Help campus travelers get where they are going with closure notices that state what is closed, when, which routes remain open, and how to find accessible alternatives.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put the traveler’s immediate answer first: what is closed, where, when, and how to reach the destination instead. Give the detour in text as well as on a map, separate effects on different travel modes and building access, and make the accessible route and contact for problems easy to find. A central closure page with dated, individually maintained notices works well when several campus projects are changing at once.

Start with the trip the reader needs to make

Students, employees, visitors, transit riders, bicyclists, and drivers arrive with practical questions: Which path or road is closed? Can I still reach the building entrance? Where should I park or catch the bus? Put the answer near the top of each notice, rather than requiring readers to interpret a project description or map before they can plan a trip.

Use recognizable local names for roads, paths, buildings, entrances, parking areas, and transit stops. State both the affected location and the destination or connection that remains usable. A notice that says only “construction will affect campus access” does not tell someone how to get where they are going.

Use a hub for multiple projects and a notice for each change

For a campus with several active projects, use a central construction-alert or closure page that links to individual notices. Group or label impacts so readers can find roads and parking, pedestrian and bicycle routes, and building access or elevators. Colorado State University uses these impact categories; Georgia Tech presents a timeline map with dated updates and project contacts. These are examples of organizational approaches, not a universal standard. Colorado State University and Georgia Tech

Keep each notice focused on one location, phase, or meaningful route change. If a project has several phases, label the phase and dates clearly; avoid leaving a single notice to describe multiple routes that apply at different times.

What every closure notice should say

  1. Headline: Name what is closed and where, using familiar road, path, building, or entrance names.
  2. Dates and times: State when the change begins and its expected end or defined work window. Mark intermittent work and uncertain dates plainly. Show when the notice was last updated.
  3. What is affected: Identify the relevant roadway, sidewalk, bike lane, parking spaces or lot, transit stop, entrance, loading access, or service route. Separate impacts by travel mode rather than using a generic “closure” label.
  4. How to reach the destination: Give the detour in words, including turns, connecting paths, landmarks, and the entrance that remains open. For parking or transit changes, give an alternative only when it has been confirmed.
  5. Map: Place a legible map near the notice. Mark the limits of the closure and the detour distinctly, with labels and a legend. Add a phase or date label if the route changes over time.
  6. Accessibility: State the accessible route and usable entrance when confirmed. Include relevant ramps, temporary paths, or available accessible parking, and provide a contact for access problems.
  7. Safety and emergency access: Explain relevant restrictions or emergency access arrangements, and tell travelers to follow posted signs and directions from on-site personnel.
  8. Contact: Name the responsible office or project contact and provide a direct way to report a route or access issue.

Write detours as directions, not just as lines on a map

Give a route that a traveler can follow without having to infer which line or symbol is meant for them. Specify the origin or affected connection, the route around the work, and where it reconnects. Include named landmarks, turns, paths, or streets as appropriate. State separately what remains open: for example, vehicle access to particular lots, a pedestrian tunnel, a building entrance, or a relocated transit stop.

University notices illustrate why this detail matters. Wright State describes vehicle access to four parking lots rerouted via Center Park Boulevard, bus stops moved to another lot, and a tunnel that remains available to pedestrians. Colorado State names a closed sidewalk and specific alternatives. Wright State University and Colorado State University

Do not assume that a route suitable for one mode works for another. A roadway detour may not be a safe or accessible walking route; a pedestrian path may not serve bicyclists; a building may remain open while its usual entrance is closed. Make each relevant route and access condition explicit.

Pair the map with accessible text

A map is useful for orientation, but it should not be the only place where the closure and detour are explained. The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative describes complex images as containing substantial information—more than can be conveyed in a short phrase or sentence. Its guidance recommends a short identification of the image plus a textual representation of its essential information, with the complex image referred to and summarized in surrounding text. W3C WAI, Complex Images

For a closure map, summarize the closed segment and the detour in the page text. Do not rely on color alone to distinguish the closed route from the alternative: use labels, symbols, and a legend as well. If the map includes interactive regions, provide context for the map as a whole and text explaining the purpose or destination of each region. W3C WAI’s Images Tutorial states that images need text alternatives describing the information or function they represent. W3C WAI, Images Tutorial

Make dates and changes trustworthy

Construction schedules and field conditions can shift because of weather, site conditions, or project needs. Publish the planned window and distinguish confirmed conditions from estimates. When the end date is unknown, say so and give a next update point or a responsible contact rather than presenting an uncertain date as definite.

Assign an owner to each notice and update it when field conditions change. Coordinate website updates with physical signs and any transit, parking, or emergency notices so that readers do not encounter conflicting route instructions. Remove expired information or preserve it in a dated archive when it helps people plan for a future phase.

Michigan State’s interactive closure map defaults to the current date and allows visitors to filter by a custom date and inspect walking routes. That is one implementation example, not evidence that an interactive map is the right choice for every campus. Michigan State University, Road and Lane Closures

Choose a format the campus can maintain

A static notice, a collection of notices, and an interactive map solve different publishing problems. Compare them against the work the institution must do and the information travelers need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question What to evaluate
How quickly can staff update a changed phase? Whether the notice or map can be revised promptly, and who is responsible for the update.
Can users find the change that applies to them? Whether information can be filtered or clearly grouped by date and travel mode.
Can people understand the route? Whether the presentation shows a route around the closure, not only pins or closure markers.
Is equivalent information available without visual map interpretation? Whether directions, closure limits, accessible routes, and entrance details are also available as text and whether interactive controls are accessible.
Who verifies the underlying information? Whether a named owner checks routes, dates, access conditions, and alignment with field signs.

Michigan State documents date filtering and walking-route visualization; W3C WAI provides guidance for accessible image alternatives. Neither example establishes that one software approach is best for every campus. Michigan State University, W3C WAI, Complex Images, and W3C WAI, Images Tutorial

Example notice structure

Use this as a content outline, replacing each item with verified project information:

  • Headline: [Named path, road, lot, or entrance] closed near [recognizable location]
  • Timing: [Start date and time] to [expected end or work window]; last updated [date]
  • Who and what are affected: [Separate vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle, transit, parking, and building-access impacts as applicable]
  • Route: [Directions around the closure, where the detour reconnects, and which destination entrance remains open]
  • Accessible route: [Confirmed accessible route and entrance, or contact for access conditions]
  • Map: [Dated or phase-labeled map with closure limits, labeled detour, and legend]
  • Safety and emergency access: [Relevant conditions and reminder to follow posted signs or staff directions]
  • Questions or access issue: [Responsible office and direct contact method]

Or skip the browser setup

If your team wants a clean screenshot of a published closure page for review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one API request. For a public test page, the cURL example below saves a WebP image; replace the URL with the published notice you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.edu -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot, page-information, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
