Commissioning stream art, emotes, overlays, alerts, or music goes more smoothly when you agree on two things before work begins: exactly what the artist will deliver and exactly what rights you will receive. Paying for the files does not automatically give you copyright ownership. Put the specifications, revisions, deadlines, payment milestones, and permitted uses in a written agreement.
1. Write a brief the artist can quote and deliver against
Describe your channel, audience, visual direction, and where each asset will appear. A brief should make the scope concrete enough that both sides can tell what is included and when the work is ready for approval.

List each deliverable and its technical requirements
Name the assets you want—for example, a starting screen, panels, alerts, emotes, avatar, animated stinger, logo, or original music. For each one, specify its intended platform and use, required dimensions or duration where applicable, file format, and whether you need an editable source file as well as an export. Ask the artist to identify any fonts, stock items, samples, or other third-party material involved.
Agree on the process before work starts
- Set a schedule with milestones and dates, including when you will review drafts.
- Define how many revision rounds are included, what counts as a revision, and how additional changes will be handled.
- Identify approval points, such as concept, rough draft, and final delivery.
- Write down the payment schedule and what each payment is tied to.
There is no universal commission template or reliable market-wide benchmark for price, delivery time, or included revisions. Compare actual proposals against their deliverables, schedule, revision terms, and rights rather than assuming a standard rate.

2. Decide whether you need a license or a copyright transfer
Make the rights arrangement explicit. The artist may retain copyright while licensing you defined uses, or the agreement may provide for a transfer of copyright. A file delivery—whether PNG, PSD, audio, or another format—is not itself a copyright transfer. Under U.S. law, transferring ownership of a physical or digital copy does not by itself convey rights in the copyrighted work, and a transfer of copyright ownership generally requires a signed writing. See the U.S. Copyright Act.
The U.S. Copyright Office says the creator is generally the initial owner of visual or graphic art. Commissioned work should not be treated as automatically “work made for hire”: the U.S. rules require an eligible category and a written agreement signed by both parties, and the Copyright Office notes that most visual arts works do not fall within the commissioned-work categories. If ownership matters, specify the intended license or transfer in the agreement instead of relying on that label. 3. Spell out the uses you need, including future ones
“For my stream” can mean very different things. List the permitted uses one by one so neither party has to guess later. Consider whether the agreement covers:

- VODs, clips, and social-media promotion.
- Use on YouTube or other platforms, if you intend to publish there.
- Sponsor placements, paid advertising, or other promotional campaigns.
- Merchandise and other products for sale.
- Edits, adaptations, and derivative versions, including changes made by an editor or production vendor.
- Exclusivity, attribution or credit, and whether the artist may show the work in a portfolio.
- Permission to share files with editors, designers, or production vendors who need them to carry out the agreed uses.
These are negotiation points, not universal legal requirements. If a use is important, name it and agree whether it is included, restricted, exclusive, or subject to a separate fee. A limited license can be appropriate when it covers your actual needs; a broader or exclusive grant may affect the price.

4. Check rights in music and other third-party material
Ask whether the commissioned work incorporates stock imagery, fonts, premade elements, samples, or contributions from collaborators. Confirm that the relevant permissions cover your planned channel and commercial uses, including merchandise or advertising if applicable.
For music, check that the composer or vendor controls the rights needed to authorize your intended Twitch use. Twitch warns that a person may offer permission without controlling every necessary right, and that buying music or subscribing to a music service does not by itself authorize using the track on Twitch. Its DMCA & Copyright FAQs put responsibility on the streamer to ensure they have the necessary rights to music used in channel content, including when using an Extension.

5. Keep the agreement and understand Twitch’s platform rules
Keep the signed agreement, payment records, written permissions, and final files somewhere you can retrieve them if a platform claim arises. Twitch says it acts on complete copyright notifications and generally treats three copyright strikes as its repeat-infringer threshold; that policy figure is not a prediction of the outcome for an individual channel. Review Twitch’s current copyright guidance and Terms of Service before deploying commissioned assets. Twitch’s terms grant the platform a broad license over user content uploaded to Twitch, which may matter when planning how an asset is used.

6. Handle sponsor branding transparently
Twitch identifies brand-logo stream overlays as branded content. Its guidance says streamers are not expected to use the branded-content tool unless branded content is a central and intentional part of the livestream. For a specific sponsorship, check Twitch’s Branded Content Policy and current tool instructions, and disclose the sponsorship appropriately.

7. Compare proposals by fit, scope, and rights—not just the quote
Evaluate proposals on the total package and its suitability for your channel:
- Portfolio and style fit for your channel and audience.
- Whether the listed deliverables meet your platform and technical requirements.
- Schedule, review milestones, and revision process.
- License scope, especially edits, merchandise, advertising, cross-platform use, and exclusivity.
- Source-file delivery and permissions for third-party materials.
- Total price for the rights and deliverables you actually need.
There is no established market-wide commission price in the available official guidance. Get a written quote tied to the scope and rights, and compare proposals on the same requirements.
