To add a moderator to a 24/7 YouTube radio station, use the YouTube app to appoint someone from their live-chat message menu, or add their channel URL in YouTube Studio under Settings → Community. Choose a standard moderator for routine chat cleanup; choose a managing moderator only when you trust the person to change chat settings and administer other standard moderators.
Choose the right moderator role
YouTube describes a moderator as someone the channel owner trusts to help build a positive, safe community. The two roles differ in how much control they provide:

A managing moderator does not get access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio, and cannot appoint another managing moderator. Assign the least powerful role that covers the person’s responsibilities. YouTube’s role guidance is at Moderate live chat.

Add a moderator in the YouTube app
- Open the stream’s live chat in the YouTube app.
- Find a message posted by the person you want to appoint.
- Open the menu for that message.
- Choose Add as standard moderator or Add as managing moderator.
The candidate needs to have a message in the chat for this route. If they are not present or you prefer to use their channel identity directly, add them through YouTube Studio instead.

Add a moderator in YouTube Studio
- Open the YouTube Studio app and go to Settings → Community.
- Under the Automated Filters tab, enter the person’s channel URL in either the Standard moderator or Managing moderators box.
- Save the change.
- Ask the appointee to open the stream’s live chat so they can moderate it.
Use the URL for the moderator’s channel identity, not a display name that might be shared by multiple accounts. YouTube says the appointment remains in effect until the creator removes the moderator.
Set up coverage for a continuous station
Moderator permissions make someone eligible to act; they do not create round-the-clock staffing. YouTube does not publish a recommended moderator-to-viewer ratio or a staffing plan for a 24/7 station. The operator needs to decide what level of human coverage the community requires.

- Set named coverage periods and handoff times if you expect human attention throughout the day.
- Agree on who handles urgent or ambiguous situations, and how an outgoing moderator alerts the next person.
- Give moderators clear boundaries for when to remove a message, use a timeout, or hide a user.
- Periodically confirm that each moderator can open the live chat and still has the intended role.
Use YouTube’s built-in controls alongside people
Hold potentially inappropriate messages for review
YouTube can hold messages that its systems identify for moderator review. A moderator can show or hide a held message; if nobody acts, it remains hidden. YouTube cautions that no system is perfect, so review is a filter rather than a guarantee. See YouTube’s live chat moderation guidance.

Block words and phrases
Set blocked terms in YouTube Studio’s Community settings. Messages containing or closely matching those terms can be blocked, reducing repeated cleanup for known problem language. Revisit the list when it is no longer useful or begins catching acceptable messages.

Enable slow mode when chat moves too quickly
Slow mode sets a wait interval between messages from viewers in Live Control Room. The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are not subject to the viewer limit. Use it when chat volume is difficult to follow, while considering whether the extra friction suits the station’s community.
Choose participation modes deliberately
YouTube’s moderator controls include options such as subscriber-only and members-only chat. These can narrow who participates, but they also change the experience for casual listeners; enable them only when that trade-off fits the station.

Remember embedded-player limitations
YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Someone listening through an embed may not have the same chat access as a viewer on the YouTube watch page. YouTube’s additional controls are documented at Moderate live chat.

Troubleshoot moderator setup
- The person is not in the app’s message menu: they need to post in the live chat for the app-based appointment route. Use their channel URL in Studio if they are not present.
- The person cannot find moderation controls: confirm they opened the correct stream’s live chat and that the creator saved the intended role. Ask them to refresh or reopen the chat.
- A managing moderator expects Studio access: the role grants additional chat controls, not access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.
- Held messages are still not being reviewed: held items stay hidden unless a moderator chooses to show them; arrange active coverage if review decisions are needed.
- Listeners say chat is missing: check whether they are watching an embedded player rather than the YouTube watch page.
