The files’ contents are concatenated; duplicate headings or sections are not removed, and structured data is not automatically reconciled.
What does combining text files mean?
To combine or merge text files in this context is to place the contents of multiple files together in a single output. The order matters: the first file’s content comes first, followed by the next file’s content. Concatenation does not interpret what the text means, remove repeated material, or resolve conflicting records.

How do I combine text files into one?
Use the command for the shell you have open, and list the input files in the order you want them to appear. These examples create or replace the named output file.
Unix-like shell
In a Unix-like shell, use cat with the input files in order:

cat file1.txt file2.txt > combined.txtThe output redirection writes the concatenated contents to combined.txt. Do not include the destination as an input; otherwise, the output operation can interfere with the file being read. The OpenBSD cat manual describes concatenating and printing file operands in command-line order: OpenBSD cat(1) manual.
Windows Command Prompt
In Command Prompt, Microsoft documents this form:
copy file1.txt + file2.txt Combined.txtYou can also use a wildcard to select multiple files, but only do so when the selected-file order is suitable for your output. See Microsoft’s copy command documentation for its examples and syntax.

PowerShell
In PowerShell, read the files and send their content to Set-Content:

Get-Content file1.txt, file2.txt | Set-Content combined.txtGet-Content reads the inputs; Set-Content writes the result and replaces existing content in the destination. If your intention is to add content to an existing file rather than replace it, use Add-Content for the write operation. Microsoft documents Get-Content for PowerShell 7.5 and Set-Content for PowerShell 7.5.

What should I check before combining files?
- Input order: Explicitly list files in the intended sequence. Wildcards select files for you, so use them only if that selection and order are acceptable.
- Destination behavior: Check whether the command creates or replaces the output, or appends to an existing file. In PowerShell,
Set-Contentreplaces destination content;Add-Contentappends. - Headers and repeated text: Concatenation preserves content rather than deduplicating it. If each input begins with the same header, that header will appear repeatedly unless you remove or handle it separately.
- Encoding and line endings: Text pipelines can read and write strings rather than preserve every original byte. PowerShell’s
Get-Contentsupports an-Encodingparameter, and normally returns content by line; with-Raw, it returns a single string containing the file’s lines. Check the relevant PowerShell version and file settings when encoding or line endings matter. Do not assume these examples preserve bytes exactly. - File type: Simple concatenation is for text, not a general-purpose way to merge formats. Microsoft warns that combining binary files may produce an unusable result because of their internal formatting.
Is combining files the same as merging their data?
No. Combining text files simply places their contents together. If you need to merge records, remove duplicate rows, keep only one header, or preserve a particular data format, those are additional operations; the commands above do not perform them.
