To make a color-splash photo, keep the subject’s color and make the surrounding image black and white. On iPhone or Android, Snapseed’s Selective tool can adjust saturation in chosen areas; on a PC, Photoshop’s adjustment layer and mask workflow gives you more control over edges.
What a color splash does
Color splash—also called selective color or color pop—leaves one subject or region colored while the rest of the image appears monochrome. It is a selective edit: isolate the area to keep in color, then desaturate the rest, or restore color only inside the selection.

Make a color splash on iPhone or Android with Snapseed
Snapseed’s Selective tool uses control points to adjust parts of an image. Google’s Selective tool help explains that you can adjust saturation locally, preview the affected area with a red overlay, and resize the area. Labels and feature availability can vary by app version and platform.

- Open the photo: In Snapseed, open your image and choose the Selective tool.
- Place a control point: Tap the subject or region that should retain color.
- Set the affected area: Pinch to resize the region around the control point. Check the red overlay preview to see what the point includes.
- Adjust saturation: Open the point’s adjustment menu and raise saturation in the intended colored area.
- Work on the surroundings: Add points as needed. For a classic color-splash result, reduce saturation in the background or use a masking or brush workflow where your version provides it.
- Refine and save: Zoom in around the subject’s outline, correct areas that were missed or affected accidentally, then save or export a copy and compare it with the original.
Google’s Snapseed App Store listing describes local adjustments, masking, brush edits, and non-destructive editing. Treat those details as version-dependent rather than assuming every control is identical on iOS and Android. Google Research also announced interactive on-device segmentation and an Object Brush in Snapseed for iOS on 2025-10-01; that announcement does not establish feature parity across platforms or app versions. Make a color splash on a PC with Photoshop
A layer mask lets you apply a black-and-white adjustment while revealing the original color over the subject. This approach is useful when you want to refine an outline on a larger screen.
- Open the photo in Photoshop and add a desaturation adjustment layer.
- Use the adjustment layer’s mask to hide the black-and-white effect over the subject, revealing its original color.
- Paint on the mask to correct the selection: refine the subject’s edge at high zoom and check for stray color in the background.
- Save an editable copy so you can revisit the mask, then export the finished image.
Adobe documents selective color adjustment controls and the Selective Color command in its Photoshop color and tonal adjustment guidance. Selective Color can also change the balance of particular color ranges, such as cyan or green. That is different from keeping one object colored while making the rest of the photo monochrome.

Choose based on how precisely you need to select the subject, how easily you can correct edges, and whether you want to revisit the edit. Snapseed is a practical phone starting point; Photoshop offers a mask-based desktop workflow. Check the current app listing and installed version for platform-specific controls and regional availability.
